2025 is in the Record Books

The 2024-2025 high-school wrestling season is long gone and we wanted to take a second to recognize our top ranked wrestlers one more time and to recap the season.

Legacy Wrestling’s second year of rankings saw the program expand to include Maryland high-school girls, Washington, D.C. teams and D.C. high school boys. In the public-school ranks, South Carroll surged late to stand atop the state, while the private-school season featured showdowns such as Gilman tying Archbishop Spalding at the Maryland Independent State Championships and McDonogh upsetting Spalding in a late-season dual. Solidifying on the team rankings were as hard as we can remember.

The final team rankings capture how competitive Maryland wrestling has become. Gilman finished the year as the top Maryland squad, with Spalding close behind and South Carroll firmly in third. Mount St. Joseph, Loyola-Blakefield, and McDonogh rounded out the top six. In Washington, D.C., Gonzaga grabbed the top spot, followed by St. John’s College and Sidwell Friends. These lists highlight the depth of both public- and private-school programs across the region.

Individual achievements also defined the season. Tyler Verceles was the only freshman sitting at the top of Maryland’s rankings, while Zane Messiter led the D.C. list. In the women’s rankings, freshmen Summer Mutschler and Katherine Virgilio emerged as the state’s top-ranked wrestlers. A remarkably strong sophomore class featured standouts like Liam McGettigan, Eli Gabrielson, Noah Tucker, and Salah Tsarni in Maryland, with Kayode Elion and Sven Kramer heading the D.C. contingent. The junior class remains deep too, with names such as Zane Leitzel, Victor Marks-Jenkins, Morgan Lloyd, and Jet Ward ready to chase titles next year. Many of these athletes will return to lead their teams in 2025-2026.

We also bid farewell to an accomplished group of seniors. Wrestlers such as Sean Garretson, Tanner Halling, Drew Montgomery, Evan Boblits, Emmitt Sherlock, Isaac Ogunlade, and Luke Randazzo capped their high-school careers as being ranked #1 in the Maryland. D.C. seniors including Aloysius Fitzpatrick, Brayden Meeker, and Beck Holtzman also leave behind impressive legacies. On the girls’ side, seniors like Violet Land, Bella Sowards, and Anastasia Dakoulas headlined the final rankings, marking a milestone year for women’s wrestling in the region.

With the 2025 season officially recorded and our rankings archived, Legacy Wrestling is already looking ahead. Preparations for the 2025-2026 preseason rankings are under way, and the anticipation is palpable. As the site notes, “The end of the 2025 season was epic — we look forward to many more.” We can’t wait to see how new challengers emerge, how returning stars build on their success, and how the sport continues to grow in Maryland and Washington, D.C.
