Final Fargo Recap: Boys Bring Home Stop Signs

The Maryland Boys’ National Team produced five individual All-Americans at the U.S. Marine Corps 16U and Junior Nationals at the Fargodome in North Dakota last week, with six overall All-American designations as Mt. St. Joseph’s Corey Brown placed in 16U Freestyle and Greco Roman, a year after only doing so in Freestyle. Salah Tsarni (175 pounds) and Damien DuChez (94) joined Brown in 16U Freestyle as awardees. Evan Boblits (150 pounds) and Victor Marks-Jenkins (190) reached the Junior Greco Podium.

BROWN LEADS THE WAY AS ONLY DOUBLE PLACER

Corey Brown came into Fargo as an honorable mention grappler at 120 pounds in the Pre-Fargo update to High School on SI’s National Rankings and went 2-1 versus the ranked foes he encountered in the Freestyle field. Brown’s bracket was so big he needed five wins to reach the semifinals. Two early technical superiority victories were followed by a round of 32 decision of Iowa’s Kipton Lewis, 8-2.

Brown’s round of 16 opponent, Ryder Owen (Washington), would go on to win a Greco Roman crown, but in Freestyle, Brown ruled the day with a 13-2 tech in 3:31. The soon to be sophomore had his biggest win of the tournament in the quarterfinals over No. 25 Izayiah Chavez of Texas, 4-1. A 2-1 semifinal loss to fellow honorable mention entry Mateo Gallegos (Pennsylvania) dropped Brown to the consolation round.

“Wrestling Chavez was a great opportunity,” Brown said. “He took second in my U.S. Open bracket (Brown did not place). “I knew that he’s tough and scrappy. I went out there and did my thing. I wrestled smart, didn’t force any moves and just wrestled to score points. “Gallegos is another great wrestler and one of my buddies off the mat. We both kind of wrestle similarly. It was a really low scoring match with the score. Only two to one with not really any action. That loss is going to help better me with my attacks.”

Brown dropped his consolation semi with Florida’s No. 17 Jovanni Tovar, 10-2. In the fifth-place match, the Gael trounced California’s highly touted incoming freshman Nathan Reynolds, 10-0 in the first frame, 1:51. Reynold’s beat Stephen Decatur’s Elijah Collick at the U.S. Open. Gallegos finished as runner-up to Ohio’s Honorable Mention Tommy Wurster, while Tovar earned a bronze. Wurster beat Brown on criteria, 2-2, at the U.S. Open in the Spring.

Brown finished third in Greco at 120 pounds with his loss coming in the round of 16 to Nebraska’s Dominic Olson, by tech, 9-1 (1:26). Olson did not place, dropping his first consolation match to Gallegos. Brown did not avenge any Freestyle losses while accruing seven tech falls and a pin but did finish higher than one through a common opponent. In Greco, an eight-point margin is needed for a tech as opposed to ten in Freestyle.

“Greco is my favorite style, and I was confident going into the next round,” Brown said. “It was a disappointing loss in the Round of 16, but I had to shake that off and not let that loss throw me off from my goal. I made it to the round of 16 and lost with some bad refereeing. But you can’t control bad refereeing.”

Brown teched his consolation final foe, Iowa’s Weston Porter, in 29 seconds on an 8-0 count. Porter defeated Gallegos as he advanced. Brown reeled off five straight wins in the consolation bracket with only one being close, 4-2, versus Idaho’s Scout Scott in the blood round. Brown teched New York’s fifth place finisher, Anthony Valls, 9-0 (1:12), and eighth place finisher Aidan McClure (Illinois), 12-1 (2:16). Gallegos beat McClure to take seventh.

“I refocused and had the mentality that I was gonna get the next best thing – third,” stated Brown. “I wanted to go out there and not just win but dominate them. Going into Fargo this year, I had my sights set on placing for both styles and am excited that I achieved that goal.”

TSARNI STEPS UP AND REACHES THE FINALS

Last year Salah Tsarni doubled up on All-American honors but did not give himself that opportunity this year as he only entered the Freestyle portion and improved on his third-place finish in 2024 by reaching the finals. Tsarni is ranked No. 7 in the latest 175-pound national rankings, so on paper he was favored versus Pennsylvania’s Jayden O’Farrill.

Farrill was not overlooked nationally as he is part of the powerful Bishop McCort program that is home to Bo Bassett and Jax Forrest, but he lacked any significant wins needed to be added to the High School on SI ratings. O’Farrill was fourth at the Pennsylvania AA states at 172 pounds, with both of his losses coming to nationally ranked wrestlers, but there were two regular season losses to unranked guys keeping him off the list.

O’Farrill’s shocking display versus Tsarni will have him moving into the rankings with the next update. It was a tight match that started in O’Farrill’s favor with Tsarni coming back to make it a one-point match, 4-3, at the break. Tsarni started the second on the right foot securing a takedown to take his first lead, 5-4. The last two points in the 6-5 loss came on step outs as O’Farrill wrestled a savvy match.

“I got overconfident,” explained Tsarni. “I felt like I had momentum, but that mindset made me sloppy. I made a mistake, and it cost me. My opponent wrestled a smart match. He’s super technical, doesn’t force things, and stayed calm under pressure. He capitalized when he had to, and that’s what high level guys do.

“I’m taking what I learned from that match and using it. I’ve already started breaking down the positions I gave up and making sure I stay sharp mentally. I need to execute more on offense, not just hand fight the whole time. And I’ve got to get myself to scoring positions and stay in control. I’m focused on being better by the next time I wrestle in a match.”

Tsarni’s run to the finals was powered by five tech falls, including 12-2 in 2:43, over fifth place finishing Tate Sailer of North Dakota in the semis. Tsarni’s closest match came versus the guy who would take third, Arizona’s Ryder Schulte, 8-4.

“Before the finals, I was wrestling well,” Tsarni offered. “I stayed aggressive, controlled the pace, and stuck to what I do best. I felt confident in my style and my pressure. The key now is to carry that same focus and intensity all the way through the finals. Not just to get there, but to finish the job.”

At the completion of his time in Fargo, Tsarni announced he was committing to the Air Force Academy, where his sister Nebi is also enrolled. As of now, there is not a women’s wrestling program at the Air Force Academy, but they are expected to join the fray sooner than later.

“Committing to Air Force is one of the best decisions for me to grow as a person on and off the mat,” Tsarni said. “The values they have: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do, are things I live by already and will stand by my whole life. The program is mission-first, but it still pushes the highest level of wrestling. I believe in what they’re building, and I’m proud to be a part of that Long Blue Line.”

DUCHEZ FINDS A HOME ON THE 16U PODIUM

Urbana’s Damian DuChez landed in the eighth spot after falling to Pennsylvania’s Riley Crandall, 3-2, in his placement match. Unlike his peers, DuChez was involved in a number of close encounters with all but two of his matches being dogfights. Two close ones came up top, one a win to open the competition, 6-4, versus Oklahoma’s Braxton Plunk, the other a 6-5 loss to Delaware’s Cody Bakhsh, in the round of 16. Bakhsh, who placed fifth, repped Maryland at the 2024 Kids’ Nationals.

“Yeah, it was a great experience and I’m super happy with the results and I owe it all to Capital Wrestling Club and the coaches there Jay (LaValley), Elijah (Oliver), Teague (Moore), and Max (Meltzer) and I couldn’t have done it without them,” DuChez said. “Every match was tough. At that level everyone’s good, so for me it was just staying focused and trusting my coaches. Yeah, it was a tough match (versus Crandall), definitely a match I think I can win in the future, and I hope to see him again.”

The only easy win endured by DuChez came in his second match with California’s Carson Wyatt that ended with a 12-2 tech in 1:29. All three of DuChez’s wins to gain placement position were won on decisions starting with Illinois’ Reese Babcock, 5-2, then Xander White of Ohio, 6-4, and another 6-4 tally in the blood round over Dominic DeMarco (Illinois). New Jersey’s Stephen Bagocius handed DuChez a 12-1 loss in 3:45 to drop him to the seventh-place match. Bagocius placed fourth, beating Bakhsh in the consolation semifinals.

VMJ COMES WIN ONE SHY OF BEING A DOUBLE AA

Perry Hall’s Victor Marks-Jenkins sits in the No. 15 spot in the national rankings and placed seventh on the Junior 190-pound Greco card. Marks-Jenkins defeated Virginia’s Ethan Osburn, 4-1, in his placement match. A blood round win over Iowa’s Broedy Hendricks was followed by a 6-1 loss to Illinois’ No. 7 Jimmy Mastny.

“The match for seventh was weird,” Perry Hall coach Doug Yoakum recalled. “We had three guts, and a four-point throw that got over turned and a couple questionable slips that took six points off the board. The match could’ve been 20-0 honestly. The Pennsylvania Chairman said the same thing as he was watching.”

“I'm glad I have the opportunities that I did so that I was able to go to Fargo,” Marks-Jenkins said. “Being an All-American is great, but my goal was to do my best and I think I put everything I had into this past week.”

Marks-Jenkins kicked it off with a first period pin and two technical falls, both on 8-0 scores, and then found himself squaring off with one of those dreaded Greco Roman Specialists, Aidan Squier of New Jersey, whose skill set is centered in this discipline, resulting in an 8-0 quarterfinal loss in 1:48. Squier finished third, beating Mastny in the consolation final, 11-1.

“It being my favorite style I'm glad I did the best in Greco,” revealed Marks-Jenkins. “I think that most of my actions I took were very intentional and my planning led to the positive outcome.”

Marks-Jenkins was just one win shy of stepping on the podium twice as he fell in the blood round in Freestyle to No. 10 John Murphy of Minnesota, 17-6 (4:53). The Gator won four straight consolation matches before that setback, including one over Honorable Mention Brayden Zeurcher (Pennsylvania), 10-0 (4:00) and a 12-2 tech over Osburn in 3:48. California’s Esteban Sanchez went the distance in a 7-4 loss.

“The Murphy match in the blood round, we were up 6-1,” Yoakum said. “VMJ took a bad shot and gave up four and then it came unglued. That match was 20 minutes after another brutal match, so it was a very tough few minutes. Murphy is a hammer, he’s a D1 commit to Wyoming! After you get out of Day One, everyone left is a monster.”

Marks-Jenkins pinned in his first match then rolled to an 11-0 tech in 3:33 before suffering an unexpected defeat at the hands of Honorable Mention Trey Craig of Missouri, 5-4, in the round of 32. Murphy placed seventh and Craig failed to bring home hardware.

“I think I could have done better especially in the first match I lost in Freestyle,” the upcoming senior said. “But overall, I still pushed myself physically as far as I thought I could go.”

“As for Victor gaining All-American status, it’s big for Perry Hall High School, it’s big for BCPS, and it’s big for Maryland,” Yoakum said proudly. “Public school kids don’t usually AA in Fargo! (I’m) proud of him and it’s been a lifetime of commitment to get there! He caught the eye of several D1 programs while out there!”

BOBLITS HITS PAYDIRT IN FINAL FARGO TRIP

National Honorable Mention Evan Boblits (St. Mary’s Ryken) was close to finding Freestyle success as he got within two wins of the blood round and three of placing. Boblits picked up a notable win over Missouri’s Chance Ruble, 13-4. Ruble was a 16U Double All-American a year ago including being a Greco Roman Champ. Both of the Naval Academy commit’s losses were to nationally ranked wrestlers who placed in the bracket, 4-2, to runner-up No. 15 Dallas Russell of Georgia and 8-3 to fifth place finishing, No. 27 Gus Cardinal (Arizona).

“Both of my losses in Freestyle I felt were close matches that really could have gone either way,” reflected Boblits. “But I just happened to fall short in those matches, again, it just shows how everyone there is good, and anyone can win on any given day. Having lost to my first kid in the round of 16 and watching him make it to the finals definitely stung. But that just fueled me for Greco later in the week.”

The Greco competition afforded Boblits’ his first time placing at Fargo landing in seventh with a 9-0 tech in 3:52 of Texas’ Bryce Palmer. A consolation quarter loss to Alaska’s Jacob Morris, who took third, came after a blood round match that kept Ruble off the podium this year, 5-1.

“It feels great,” remarked Boblits. “I’ve been working towards that for years and to finally be able to reach it after coming short so many times feels amazing. It’s definitely a big achievement to end off my high school career. I didn’t know that (about Ruble’s prior accomplishments) but that just really shows how everyone there is a great wrestler, and it takes everything you got to come out on top at that tournament.”

A quarterfinal loss to No. 8 Matthew Martino of Idaho, who captured top honors, came after opening with three techs and a pin. The pin came in the round of 16 against Honorable Mention Mason Petersen of Nebraska, 5:16, a wrestler Boblits lost to in 2024 at Fargo.

“That win against Petersen felt great after I lost to him 5-4 last year in Greco,” Boblits said. “It was a good redemption match that I felt was well overdue.”

Boblits will not be fully enrolled at the Naval Academy in 2025/2026. That will come in a year’s time.

“So, I’m doing a prep year first,” Boblits explained. “The Navy Wrestling Team has an RTC House that I’ll be living in and taking online classes from. Other than that, I’ll just be practicing at Navy with the team all the time. Then I report for Plebe Summer next Summer, and that’s it, no breaks after that.”

PICKETT PICKS UP BIG WIN

Mt. St. Joe’s Brooklyn Pickett found 16U success a year ago, placing fourth in Freestyle. Up in the Junior ranks this year, Pickett found the sledding a little tougher, going 6-2, and having his voyage ended two wins from the blood round and three from placing, getting eliminated by California’s No. 9 Jesse Grajeda. In the match before that, Pickett took out No. 30 Austin Collins (Colorado), 14-3 in 3:22. Four tech falls came in the consolations after a one-point championship bracket loss to South Dakota’s Aidan Callahan, 10-9.

SNYDER SUFFERS TOUGH LOSSES IN REPEAT AA BID

Peter Snyder, who has been competing for the Blair Academy in New Jersey and is ranked 22nd in the nation, was a 2024 Fargo Junior All-American and had his repeat hopes snuffed out by unranked Sutton Kenning of Minnesota, who placed eighth. Snyder suffered that defeat immediately after dropping into the consolation bracket following a round of 16 loss to the Freestyle National Champion, Honorable Mention Lucas Ricketts of Kentucky. Directly before losing to Ricketts, Snyder picked off No. 8 Gunner Henry (Indiana), 4-2.

There is a speculation that Snyder’s time at Blair has come to an end and the Berlin resident may be enrolled at his home school in Maryland, Stephen Decatur, for his senior season.

COLLICK’S PATH TO GLORY BLOCKED BY NATIONAL STARS

Stephen Decatur’s Elijah Collick, who was nationally ranked at 120 pounds, made it as far as Pickett before losing to Honorable Mention Eric Casula of Oklahoma in the 126-pound Junior Bracket. Collick’s first loss came to another Oklahoma grappler, No. 2 Ignacio Villasenor, 7-0. Casula was injured in his next match and couldn’t continue; Villasenor had tough luck against highly rated foes and was kept off the podium. Collick was 6-2 with a 16-5 win over North Dakota’s Joey Enzminger.

VERCELES’ TOUGH LUCK

A year ago, Loyola-Blakefield’s Tyler Verceles, honorable mention nationally at 113 pounds, was a placer in both disciplines but was unable to add to his All-American count this year after getting injured in his first match and having to medically forfeit out of the tournament. The injury suffered in Freestyle was severe enough to hold Verceles out of Greco.

HAYES, FOREMAN, AND TORRALBA SHINE FOR PG COUNTY

Eleanor Roosevelt’s Austin Hayes was two wins from placing and one from the blood round in the Junior Greco field at 113 pounds. Hayes was 4-2 in Greco and 2-2 in Freestyle. Hayes’ Roosevelt squadron mate, Leo Foreman, was 2-2 at 150 pounds in Junior Freestyle.

Lazaro Torralba, who came out of nowhere for Parkdale last year to place fourth in the 4A/3A states, put up 3-2 records in both styles in the 16U Division, competing at 157 pounds in Greco and 150 in Freestyle where he landed two wins shy of the blood round.

FUTURE OF THE GAELS

Mt. St. Joe’s future was on further display with incoming freshman, Nathan Matthis, coming three wins from placing at 113 pound in the 16U Greco bracket with a 2-2 record. Connor Allison (138) was 4-2 in 16U Greco and 2-2 in Freestyle. At 138 pounds, Tyler Stephens went 2-2 in Junior Greco. Allison and Stephens will be juniors this year. Brown and Pickett begin their sophomore campaigns.

BEST OF THE REST

Gilman’s Liam McGettigan comes home with a 3-2 record in Junior Freestyle at 113 pounds. Walt Whitman’s Jabasie Trice had some Freestyle success at 120 pounds going 2-2 on the 16U side. McDonogh’s Mason Comegy was 2-2 in the 16U Greco 138-pound weight class. Raul Rodrguez of Oakland Mills went 2-2 at 157 pounds in the Junior Greco Brackets.
