16U Final Results: Congrats Boys!

“I think our favorite duals were our final two against Team Idaho and Indiana Blue,” 16U Head Coach Andrew Lacroix said about Team Maryland’s time on the Freestyle mats in Farmington, Utah. “Idaho caught us off guard in Greco immediately after our very close loss to Kansas, and the boys really wanted to get that one back (and they did),36-32, in an incredibly tight dual, on the backs of the momentum from Wolokolie, Naylor, Baumgartner and Votta down the stretch whom helped put it out of reach with dominant wins.”
MARYLAND AVENGES IDAHO GRECO LOSS
Jacob Naylor (126 pounds), Chad Votta (132), and Wes Baumgartner (138) won three in a row late in the Idaho dual meet. Baumgartner’s win clinched the team victory. Naylor and Baumgartner used technical falls for their wins and Votta won a 14-8 decision versus Anthony Flores.
Samora Wolokolie (113 pounds) posted a 10-0 tech over Tytan Freeman to complete Maryland’s comeback. Wolokolie’s win gave Maryland a one-point advantage at 24-23. At 120, Braidyn Taby fell to temporarily place the lead back in Idaho’s hands before Naylor started the run that gained the win.
Wolokolie’s win was actually the final one in a five-match win streak, which took them from a 22-4 deficit to that 24-23 lead. Owen Stewart started it at 285 pounds by sticking Isaias Torres in 59 seconds. Dylan Verceles (94 pounds) and Julian McCrimmon (106) contributed tech falls to the cause. Kyle Link won a 9-0 bout at 100 pounds.
Idaho won five of the first six matches for their big lead. During that stretch, the only Maryland win came from Kadyn Tyler, who won a wild one with Cruz Ramirez, 11-10, at 157 pounds.
INDINANA LEAVES MARYLAND FEELING BLUE
“Indiana Blue, our final dual, was such a see-saw high intensity dual that came down to the very end as well, with us losing by one point 38-37,” offered Lacroix. “Total nail-biter. What’s so great about duals in international style is that if you get a point on the board in the match, you get your team at least one team point (as long as there isn’t a fall), and there were a couple times where we couldn’t pitch a shutout in the individual matches and it came back to bite us in the end.”
The Indiana match once again featured a late push, orchestrated by the same crew with Wolokolie (113), Naylor (120), Votta (132), and Baumgartner (138) picking up key wins late in the matchup.
Maryland was hurting when it was Wolokolie’s turn to take the mat and he came though with a 12-8 decision. Naylor followed with a 47 second fall of Eli Kinkaide at 120 pounds. Taby dropped his match at 126 and then Votta and Baumgartner put up big points to get within one point of Indiana.
Votta had a 10-0 tech, that coupled with Baumgertner’s 20 second fall made the score 33-32 with two matches remaining. John Vaughn teched Jake Jones, Jr. at 144 pounds to leave the count at 37-33. At 150, Ryker Keeney gained a technical fall that would have evened the score were it a shutout, but it was 18-7, so in losing Reid Lanman added the winning team point for Indiana.
Early wins in the dual were pocketed by Tyler (157 pounds), Zachary Landis (190), Verceles (88), and Link (100).
The loss to Indiana Blue meant Maryland placed fourth in the Green/Yellow Pool. They wrestled four matches in that setting with a win coming against Arkansas, 56-21, and a loss at the hands of South Dakota, 47-32.
Maryland began their Freestyle action in Pool A, where they earned a seventh-place finish by beating Virginia, 40-36, in the placement match. They began with a loss to eventual pool champs, New Jersey (57-19), then defeated Nebraska (50-33) before falling to Florida, 46-26.
HANDLING VIRGINIA FOR 7th
The Virginia Dual saw Virginia actually win more bouts than Maryland, 9-8, but what separated them was Maryland gaining bonus points in every win, a feat Virginia could not duplicate.
Naylor kicked off the dual with a 10-0 tech of Matthew DeAngelo at 120 pounds. Virginia took over following Naylor and won five consecutive matches, but only went up by ten points, 18-8. Why? Bonus points were only accrued in three matches and Virginia allowed Maryland to add a team point in losing efforts four times.
Tyler stuck Giovanni Lennon in 1:22 at 157 pounds to get Maryland back on track. At 165 pounds, Amir Cartwright received a forfeit to tie it at 18 all. Maryland gave that five right back when they forfeited at 175.
Landis kept Virginia’s time back with the lead to a minimum when he stuck Devin Willis in 1:05 at 190 pounds to even it back up at 23. The lead would trade hands a few more times before Maryland asserted itself and closed with two wins from McCrimmon (106) and Wolokolie (113).
McCrimmon’s 8-0 win over Camden Palmer put Maryland ahead by two points and Wolokolie ended it with a 14-3 tech fall of Tiago Erazo to clinch the 40-36 win (MD lost a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct). Stewart and Verceles came up big with pins at 285 and 88 pounds respectively to setup McCrimmon and Wolokolie’s dramatic finish.
“A true highlight was our 40-36 battle on the stage (Mat 1 front and center) against regional rival Virginia,” remarked Lacroix. “The boys were especially hyped for that dual, as stage duals are always very exciting and it’s always fun to battle a rival. While everyone contributed, it was JuJu McCrimmon and Samora Wolokolie who brought it home for us in the end when we needed it most.
“They stayed composed when facing the pressure of our entire team victory and preformed so admirably. “As the kids say: “Ice in their veins!” JuJu did a great job of finding simple scores (rather than go for anything big or needlessly high impact) and kept distancing himself on the scoreboard. Aggressive and (most importantly) smart wrestling. Similar for Samora to close it out; he stayed composed and got to his attacks and evaded ties where he could’ve been in any danger. Both boys did their job admirably when we needed them most.”
AND IN THE END…
Just one Maryland Freestyler made the All-Tournament team by going undefeated and posting an 8-0 record, Dylan Verceles.
Stewart was 7-1 with his sole loss coming in the final dual versus Indiana. Putting up 6-2 tallies were Wolokolie, Naylor, Votta, and Tyler. Baumgartner was 5-3.
Going 4-4 were Link, Landis, and Endzel. Both McCrimon and Cayetano Nicodemus were 2-2 at 106 pounds. Jones, Jr., Keeney, and Taby contributed more than just their wins.
“Team MVP is undoubtedly Dylan Verceles,” Lacroix added. “Undefeated in both styles and All-Tournament team in both styles. What a stud, and an excellent precursor for Fargo in a few weeks. He is definitely ready to roll in July.”
