7 Maryland Wrestlers Ranked Nationally

A couple weeks ago, we saw the first set of National Rankings for the 2025/2026 rankings cycle. Maryland has seven grapplers appearing on the list. The highest rated of those will not be with a Maryland School as Salah Tsarni is taking his considerable talents to Blair Academy in New Jersey.

A guy who used to be at Blair will be a Seahawk for his final year as Peter Snyder comes home to Maryland and will compete for Stephen Decatur (3A). Snyder is joined in the national rankings by another Seahawk, Elijah Collick. Tsarni is vacating as his former teammate at Bullis, Noah Tucker, lands in the rankings for the first time.

Mt. St. Joseph has two in the report with Corey Brown and Brooklyn Pickett. The final nationally ranked Marylander is Perry Hall’s Victor Marks-Jenkins.

Victor Marks-Jenkins (Perry Hall) SR – No. 11 at 190 pounds

Marks-Jenkins reached All-American status at Fargo in Junior Greco Roman and fell during the blood round of the Freestyle competition. The Gator has placed second and third at the last two Journeymen Classics (Spring and Fall). In the Spring, Marks-Jenkins handled No. 12 Tanner Hodgins (Howell, NJ) and No. 14 Maximus Konopka (Simsbury, CT). Hodgins earned an U17 World Bronze Medal in Freestyle this Summer.

Marks-Jenkins has lost to No. 9 John Murphy (St. Michael-Albertville, MN) twice in Freestyle (Northern Plains Regional and Fargo) but beat Murphy in the Greco Finals of the Northern Plains Regional. VMJ has split matches with No. 23 Trey Craig (Christian Brothers College, MO) and beat No. 25 Carter Vannest (John H. Pitman, CA) in both styles at Fargo.

On the local front, Marks-Jenkins will be looking to add his fourth Baltimore County and Region titles to his resume. Marks-Jenkins can become the first three-time state champion for Perry Hall in March. Marks-Jenkins is also a two-time Hub Cup Champion.

Peter Snyder (Stephen Decatur) SR – No. 19 at 190 pounds

Snyder’s move back to Maryland gives us two nationally ranked guys who will be competing on Maryland soil this year at 190 pounds. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that they will meet anywhere as their schedules don’t align and they are in separate MPSSAA Classifications. Snyder is 2A/1A. VMJ 4A/3A.

Snyder’s national resume includes being a National Prep Champion as a freshman and placing fifth as a sophomore. Snyder missed last year’s edition due to injury. In the summer between his sophomore year and junior season, Snyder placed seventh in Junior Freestyle at Fargo. Snyder couldn’t replicate that run this year as he had a tough draw and picked up losses to the eventual champion, No. 7 Lucas Ricketts (Union County, KY) and No. 10 Sutton Kenning (St. Cloud Tech, MN).

Snyder earned his national ranking as junior with an eighth place showing at Ironman and a runner-up performance at the Beast of the East. At Ironman, Snyder lost to No. 11 Jimmy Mastny (Marian Central Catholic), who has also beaten VMJ a few times, and two graduated seniors that were nationally ranked.

At the Beast, Snyder was up at 215 pounds where he came up short versus No. 5 Cash Colbert (Paul VI, VA). Two of Snyder’s wins came over nationally ranked foes that have since graduated.

Snyder has been a past participant in the Journeymen Tournaments and placed third at the World Classic in the Spring of 2024. VMJ attended in the Fall of 2024 and Spring of this year. Perhaps, they will both choose to attend the Fall Classic and give themselves a chance for that otherwise elusive meeting.

Elijah Collick (Stephen Decatur) SR – No. 26 at 126 pounds

We’re not sure if Collick will stay down at 126 pounds for the season. More than likely, he may go higher for the season but stay lower nationally where he has picked off some top-level guys.

Collick placed second at the NHSCA Junior Nationals, falling in the finals to No. 6 JoJo Uhorchuk (Signal Mountain, TN), but picked up a win over No. 15 Lander Bosh (Layton, UT). Bosh is ahead of Collick in the rankings since he was eighth at Fargo and Collick did not reach the podium. Collick dropped matches to No. 25 Eric Casula (Westmoore, OK) and No. 4 Ignacio Villasenor (Stillwater, OK) at Fargo

At the U.S. Open, Collick was two wins from All-American status with a big win over No. 15 Nico DeSalvo (Southeast Polk, IA). Collick’s two losses at the Open came to No. 23 Maximus Hay (Brown Deer, WI) and an incoming freshman from California, who we do not have a team designation for yet, Nathan Reynolds (No. 30 at 120 pounds). The case for DeSalvo remaining above Collick despite the loss is based on a few common opponents and much like the case with Tsarni being above a guy he lost to in the rankings, the overall resume favors DeSalvo.

Focusing on what’s at stake in Maryland for Collick this year reveals an opportunity to become a four-time 2A/1A state titlist. Collick can also lock down his fourth crowns at the Bayside Conference and Regional Tournaments.

The one gold that has eluded Collick may be the toughest one to achieve, his school’s War On The Shore title. He was second as a freshman and third in the last two years. War On The Shore has become the toughest tournament in the state of Maryland. Up there, if not more difficult (in certain weights), than the old Mount Mat Madness affairs.

Corey Brown (Mt. St. Joseph) SO – No. 25 at 120 pounds

Brown was on his way to what many expected to be his first of four MIS State Championships when a mishap kept that from happening. Brown can still become a four-time MIAA Champ as he won his first with ease at 106 pounds with a 15-0 tech fall of Loyola-Blakefield’s Tyler Verceles, who would go onto win the state crown in Brown’s absence and place fifth at the National Prep Tournament.

Brown was posting a stellar freshman campaign throughout the winter including a third-place finish at the Beast of the East and a title winning run at the East Coast Catholic Classic where he downed New Jersey’s Sean Kenny (Christian Brothers Academy, No. 10 at 113 pounds). At the Beast, Brown edged another Garden State grappler, St. Joseph Regional’s JoJo Burke (No. 3 at 113).

Brown placed fifth in Greco Roman at the U.S. Open, sticking Verceles in the placement match, 1:03. One of Brown’s wins came over Indiana’s Traevon Ducking (Brownsburg, No. 11 at 106 pounds). Brown was at 51 kilograms at the Open which is roughly 112 pounds. His losses were to No. 22 Jackson Shipley of Dripping Spring, Texas and No. 28 Carter Shin (Chantilly, VA).

At Fargo, Brown was up at 120 pounds on the 16U card and placed fifth in Freestyle and followed that up with a bronze medal in Greco Roman. In the fifth-place match, Brown teched California’s Reynolds, 10-0. Brown also took care of No. 26 Izayiah Chavez (Allen, TX). Both losses came to ranked rivals, No. 23 Jovanni Tovar (Miami Southridge, FL) and No. 24 Mateo Gallegos (DuBois, PA).

Brooklyn Pickett (Mt. St. Joseph) SO – Honorable Mention at 144 pounds

A lot of what got Pickett into the rankings is old business, but the quality of that business is undeniable, the old business is good business, as they say, it’s just been offset by some inconsistency that is common with a young guy in the middle weights.

Without going into specifics, Pickett’s National Hitlist includes Iowa’s Justis Jesuroga (No. 6 at 150 pounds) and wins over multiple fellow honorable mention entries, Delbarton, New Jersey’s Ryan DeGeorge, two from California, Josh Requena (Camarillo) and Carlos Valdiviezo (Poway), and Maryland’s own Evan Boblits (St. Mary’s Ryken), who has now graduated.

Pickett was also fourth at Fargo in 16U Freestyle in 2024. While he failed to reach the podium this year in the Junior slate he did take out then No. 30 Austin Collins of Colorado. Pickett fell to No. 6 Jesse Grajeda (St. John Bosco, CA) and 2025 graduate, Aidan Callahan (South Dakota).

Pickett placed seventh at 2024’s Journeymen Fall Classic. Once his freshman year commenced, Pickett dropped his Penn Manor Tournament final to Kane Lengel (Kennett, PA). Pickett avenged that loss at the Beast of the East, where he did not place but both his losses came to nationally ranked guys, St. Christoper’s Walker Turley (No. 26 at 150 pounds) and now graduated Eren Sement (Council Rock North, PA).

A second-place finish at the East Coast Catholic Classic was given to Pickett by Malvern Prep’s Declan O’Byrne (No. 28 at 150). Pickett followed that up with his first state championship over two-time National Prep placer Nicky Melfi of Severn after sitting out the MIAA Championships.

Disaster struck at National Preps with Pickett failing to place, losing to Northfield Mount Hermon’s Colby Houle (MA), who he had beaten at the Journeymen FC, and Andrew McCarthy (New York Military Academy). It was an unexpected oddity proven by Melfi gaining his second prep placement a week after falling to Pickett (no slight meant to Melfi – just a reference point).

Noah Tucker (Bullis School) JR – Honorable Mention at 165 pounds

Tucker came on strong at the end of his sophomore season with a War on the Shore title over Huntingtown’s Will Buckler and a third-place finish at the MIS Tournament, where he came close to defeating Mt. St. Joe’s Cam Cannaday. Tucker used that match to propel himself to a fourth-place performance at the National Prep tournament where he did slay Cannaday and take the state’s top rankings at 157 pounds.

At Preps, Tucker also got the best of Gilman’s John Jurkovic in an overtime thriller.  Another quality win came over Blair Academy’s Joseph Schinder, who owns some notable wins of his own and was overlooked in the initial rankings report due to injury and inactiveness. Schinder will be added to the next update as he holds wins over No. 2 Kross Cassidy (Fairfax, VA) and No. 19 Arment Waltenbaugh (Hill School, PA). Waltenbaugh beat Tucker at Preps.

At the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals, Tucker placed third at 160 pounds with his loss coming to Florida’s Kyle Gallo (HM at 175, Zephyrhills Christian). Tucker beat Pennsylvania’s Jon Smith (No. 26 at 175 pounds, Oxford Area) and Honorable Mention Jack Chamberlain (Malvern Prep, PA).

Tucker excels in Greco Roman where he placed fourth at the U.S. Open at 80 kilograms (roughly 176 pounds). Tucker downed No. 19 Kyle Scott (Tyrone, PA) and No. 24 Riley Johnson (Omaha Skutt, NE). His losses came to No. 9 Ladd Holman (Juab, UT) and South Anchorage, Alaska’s Zane Gerlach (No. 17 at 165 pounds).

Tucker encountered Cassidy at the Junior National Duals at 165 pounds, falling to him in Freestyle but defeating Cassidy in Greco.

Salah Tsarni (Blair Academy) JR – No. 2 at 175 pounds

Tsarni’s exploits at Bullis included two private school state championships, a count he cannot add to with his departure to Blair Academy, two IAC titles, and two War on the Shore crowns.

Tsarni kicked off his sophomore season by placing third at 165 pounds at the prestigious Super 32 tournament with a win over No. 16 Travis Grace (Gilroy, CA). A runner-up finish to Gilman’s Emmitt Sherlock was the result of Tsarni’s first foray into 175-pound territory at the Ray Oliver Tournament.

Second place finishes at 165 pounds would come at the Beast of the East and National Prep Tournaments on losses to the same guy, Lake Highland Prep’s 2025 graduate, CJ Torres. Tsarni won his first NHSCA crown at the Sophomore edition versus Allen, Texas’ Steel Meyers (No. 19 at 165) in the 170-pound final after finishing second as a freshman.

Finishing in second would be Tsarni’s curse as the Spring and Summer unfolded with him dropping the 80-kilogram U.S. Open U17 Freestyle final to No. 1 Aaron Stewart (Warren Township, IL). Tsarni won the first bout in their best of three finals then dropped the last two. In Vegas, Tsarni defeated Gerlach and No. 6 Slava Shahbazyan (Birmingham, CA).

The Fargo 16U Freestyle final would deliver another disappointment with a close loss to No. 8 Jayden O’Farrill (Bishop McCort, PA) in the 175-pound final. At Fargo, Tsarni beat No. 25 Ryder Schulte (Liberty, AZ). At the NHSCA National Duals Tsarni was up at 182 pounds and encountered Lawrence North, Indiana’s Michael White (No. 6 at 190 pounds) and fell, 9-3.
