Junior Boys Freestyle Results!

The Junior Freestyle Division is one of the final steps before wrestlers head off to college. In this realm, you will find mostly juniors and seniors, but there are the occasional young bucks that pop up, especially in the lighter weights.

The point is, while you can sometimes coast in the 16U Division, that is not the case with the Junior slate as you will be pushed at every turn. This goes for Fargo and the recently completed Junior National Duals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Team Maryland finished tenth in Greco Roman, which is a niche artform. Freestyle most closely resembles Folkstyle, and therefore, is where the challenges become greater and our Maryland Boys discovered that after a promising start that saw them reach the semifinals of their preliminary Pool B.

After that high note, darker times engulfed the locals as they tumbled to sixth in the pool and eventually sixth in the Blue/Red Placement Pool, which equates to 22nd overall.

Maryland opened strongly and looked poised to build upon their Greco success after slaying Arizona, 51-15, in their opener and then coming back versus Missouri with No. 25 nationally by High School on SI, Noah Tucker, winning by technical fall versus No. 27 Luke Hayden in the final matchup at 175 pounds. Tucker’s heroics gave Maryland a 36-33 victory.

Once in the consolation rounds of Pool B, Maryland suffered two straight defeats at the hands of Georgia, 35-33, and in a rematch with Missouri for fifth-place, 39-30. The difference in the second meeting with Missouri was not scoring the same amount of bonus points as Missouri won eight of the 15 matches in both duals.

“The Freestyle run was fun,” Junior Head Coach Jordan Murphy added. "It’s hard to keep the energy high after nine Greco matches. We had a close one with Georgia and in sports there is a level of gamesmanship required to win. We played that game and it may have cost us the dual. That happens, such is life.”

The journey through the Blue/Red Pool continued the tough sledding as Maryland took it on the chin against Washington, 37-27, and Florida. 33-30, before winning in the final round versus North Dakota, 35-32. The placement match set them up with Kansas, who edged them 35-34.

“By the last day of Freestyle we were down two men,” remarked Murphy. “This was yet another blow of adversity and by the last dual the team still had high energy. The captains really served as big brothers. Even the older guys on the team that weren’t named captains stepped up.”

THE KANSAS INSPECTION

Kansas won three of the first five matches to take control of the dual and then held off a late rally as the match went down to the wire. The two wins from Maryland came from Ben Scheiner (138 pounds) and Lazaro Torralba (157 pounds). After that stretch Kansas was up 15-8.

Tucker (175 pounds) and No. 7 Salah Tsarni (190) came through with valuable points as Tucker picked up a win by decision over Emerson Tjaden, 13-6, and Tsarni teched Maximus Evans-Pryor, 10-0. The points accrued by those two left Maryland down by one, 16-15.

Unfortunately, Kansas won the next two to reassert itself and push the score to 24-16. Julian McCrimon (100 pounds) and Charles Cooper (106) gained bonus points with a tech and forfeit respectively to give Maryland its first and only lead at 25-24.

After Daerin Curry lost by tech at 113 pounds, it was painful to have to forfeit 120 pounds and earn zero team points. It is likely that if No. 22 Tyler Verceles doesn’t get injured, he would have put some points on the board and possibly beat Oscar Gauna (No. 32 at 113).

Giving Gauna free points left Maryland down by seven with two remaining, 33-26. Charlie Mutschler (126 pounds) posted a tech fall of Cruz Cannon, 14-4, to keep the Maryland hopes alive at 34-30. If No. 16 Elijah Collick could deck Bryson Rockers at 132 pounds, Maryland would win, or keeping Rockers off the board with a tech would tie it up. Collick got the tech, but allowed Rockers to score in the 14-3 match, which left Maryland one point short with a 35-34 tally.

ALL-TOURNAMENT AND MORE

Three Freestylers went 9-0 to earn All-Tournament Honors – Collick, Tucker, and Tsarni. Collick’s most notable win came against North Dakota’s Nicolas Enzminger (No. 34 at 126 pounds), 13-2. Tucker beat Hayden in both encounters, plus No. 37 Tre Haines of Washington and avenged his Greco Roman loss to Tate Sailer (ND) with a 12-1 tech.

Posting 7-2 records were Cooper and Tyler Stephens (144). Both of Cooper’s losses came to nationally ranked foes, including Oklahoma’s No. 33 Rylan Sandoval getting Cooper back for a Greco loss. Cooper’s other setback came against No. 32 Derik Kiefer (GA).

Stephens was also the victim of a get back win when No. 24 Garrison Sartain (OK) won their FS meeting after losing in GR. Stephens’ other loss came to a guy just outside the national ratings, Kansas’ Brock Johnson.

Two Marylanders were 6-3 – McCrimon and Torralba. Torralba avenged a Greco loss to Washington’s Israel Acosta. All Torralba’s blemishes were to guys in the national report, No. 6 Jake Miller (OK) and twice to Missouri’s No. 24 Jet Brown.

Mutschler was 5-4. Before his injury, Verceles was 4-3 with No. 18 Laz McEwen beating him in FS after losing in GR, No. 32 Tee Mills (GA) also got the best of Verceles as did Florida’s unranked Koa DeLoach. The Floridian beat Verceles at the Northeast Regional but had some history keeping him out of the national rankings, but he will definitely get another look now.

Scheiner picked up two wins. Curry, Cash Wheat (165 pounds), and Payton Green (285) contributed wins to the cause.

“Elijah Collick and Salah Tsarni didn’t drop a match,” Murphy said. “(They are) true students of the game, both going 18-0 on the weekend. Noah Tucker made sure he had a better performance in Freestyle than he did in Greco, going a perfect 9-0. He and Lazaro Torralba Bridon both avenged losses they took to previous opponents in Greco.”

WINNING THE VOTE

Murphy revealed that the captains and coaches made “Best of” selections with the captains naming Làzaro Torralba Bridon of The St. James Academy Most Improved. While the Coaches decided on Ju Ju McCrimon of DeMatha as Most Improved. “The young prodigy wrestled for both the 16U and the Junior team” Murphy said of McCrimon.

“To not be in the Gold Pool or a top team in Freestyle, the boys found a way to keep the energy consistent,” marveled Murphy. “Only three seniors graduate from this team: Elijah Collick (Nebraska Wrestling), Cash Wheat (Lynchburg Wrestling), and Julian Reyes (VSU Football). This leaves room for Maryland to take it to a new level next year!”

“Salah Tsarni will represent more than the state as he prepares to compete for a World Championship later this year. Many of these guys will represent the state at Fargo so there is much more work to be done as we prepare as a state to produce Fargo Champions and All-Americans. (I) would like to thank John Nogle for being an advocate behind the scenes and Brandon Lauer of the MSWA board. (This was a) legendary week. (I) couldn’t have asked for a better team.”
