A Linganore First: Back-to-Back Champs

Linganore won a battle of defending state duals champions, 34-31, over 19th-ranked South River on Saturday thanks to the resiliency of 113-pound freshman Jayden Lassiter in the night's final match against the Seahawks' 18th-ranked freshman Jackson Peeples.

Trailing, 34-28, against the Lancers (17-1), the Seahawks needed a pin from Peeples to tie the match and force a tie-breaking criteria decision. Lassiter lost only a 9-4 decision, resulting in the final margin of victory for the repeat Class 3A state dual meet champion Lancers.

"We told Jayden, 'he has to pin you in order to tie the match,” said Lancers' coach Ben Arneson, a 1994 Linganore graduate who was a Class 4A-3A state runner-up at 140 pounds. “We told him to wrestle smart, fight for your positions, don't get out of position and just manage the match. Jayden went out and did his job.”

A recent call up from the junior varsity where he is undefeated, Lassiter had improved his varsity record to 5-3 with 96-second fall in the first bout of the Lancers' 58-15 semifinal victory over Bel Air of Harford County.

The 12th-ranked Lancers had six double-winners on Saturday to earn their second straight Class 3A state duals crown led by eighth-ranked sophomore state runner-up Josh Arthur (106) with falls in 1:28 and 1:33.

"We hadn't used Jayden as much because Josh Arthur was having a hard time getting down to 106 and had been at 113," said Arneson of Arthur, a returning Class 4A-3A state runner-up. "We made sure that Jayden got matches in every dual meet, and that worked out for him. Now he's our regular at 113."

The Lancers' other double-winners were second-ranked Class 4A-3A state runner-up senior Ethan Arneson (175) with a first-period fall and a forfeit, and 16th-ranked junior third-place state finisher Brennan Considine (126) with a 72-second pin and a 19-2 technical fall. Also winning twice for the Lancers were 22nd-ranked junior Peyton Picket (157) with a 73-second fall and a major decision, 16th-ranked junior Dylan Rohn (144) with a pin and a major decision and 18th-ranked sophomore sixth-place state finisher Cash Wheat (132) with fall and a 9-3 decision.

“The victory feels amazing. The younger guys we’ve had in and out of the lineup all season really stepped up and helped us put it all together,” Coach Arneson said. “Winning last year’s state title was the first in Linganore history and now we’ve gone back-to-back. It feels damn good and I’m proud of all of our guys.”

A returning Class 4A-3A state runner-up who has also placed fourth at states, Arneson is a two-time Frederick County champion and has captured one regional title in two appearances in that event’s final.

"This win means everything to me and the rest of the team. I am just super happy for all of the guys who have been busting their butts every day in practice," said Ethan Arneson, who improved to 28-0 with 25 pins. "We've all been pushing one another to achieve and to reach this point of success. This gives me a lot of confidence going into the postseason and I just need to keep improving to win the next gold medal."

The Seahawks were after their third straight state dual meet crown, having earned last year's Class 4A version with a resounding, 42-28, triumph over Urbana of Frederick County in the state championship match. A five-time county tournament and seven-time county dual meet champion, South River finished at 16-2 a year ago.

Double-winners for South River, a 64-9 winner against Marriotts Ridge, were Peeples with a pair of decisions, 20th-ranked sophomore Trent Shipley (120) with pins in 20 seconds and 1:52, 20th-ranked junior Busayo Balogun (285) with a 37-fall and a win by injury default and ninth-ranked senior Aidan Healey (190/215) with a 70-second fall and a forfeit.

Healey is a returning county champion who finished second at regions and fourth at states. Shipley is a returning county champion who was third at regions and fifth at states. Balugon is a county champion who was fourth at regions.
