Arundel takes home gold!

Arundel sophomore Layla Jefferson pinned all four of her 235-pound opponents and was among three finalists and five wrestlers who finished within the top four of their divisions as the Wildcats captured the Girls’ War On The Shore Tournament on Saturday at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City.

Jefferson used pins in 42 seconds, 2:31 and 3:27 to reach the finals, where she also flattened Oakdale freshman Nikki Arnold in 1:46.

Runners-up were sophomore Ava Quinlan (100) and junior Camille Rameau (130), with fourth-place efforts from senior Isabella Banaszynski (125) and sophomore Korde Ojaomo (190) as the Wildcats (156.5 points) edged second-place Quince Orchard (149).

“I couldn’t be more proud of this group. Over the last two years, a remarkable group of talented, tenacious underclassmen walked into tryouts with no junior league wrestling experience, and their growth has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Coach Greg Klingler said.

“Our entire wrestling room, coaches and co-ed teammates alike, has fully embraced and supported the girls program. The results truly speak for themselves. This is a young team with dedicated senior leadership that has an incredibly bright future. I can’t wait to see the success these athletes will achieve.”

The tournament featured Maryland’s top-ranked trio, or, BIG THREE of female wrestlers in junior Taina Fernandez (140) and sophomore Summer Mutschler (110) each of whom is from Archbishop Spalding, and sophomore Kesi Tsarni (145) of Bullis.

Fernandez earned falls in 28, 50 and 74 seconds to reach her title match, where she blanked senior Aeriel Stallworth of Catasauqua (PA), by a 15-0 technical fall.

Stallwoth won her semifinal by fall in 4:25 over senior Sophia Hodges of Northeast-Anne Arundel, a previously unbeaten returning state champion who is top-ranked at 135 pounds and wrestled back to third place.

“Winning War On The Shore was a super fun experience, which I was grateful to share with all of my teammates, especially Summer Mutschler,” said Fernandez, a four-time Super 32 title winner and two-time World Champion who is top-ranked nationally among girls at 140 pounds.

“Overall, I’m extremely happy with how our team performed as a whole. It was exciting for us to represent Spalding so strongly, taking advantage of the opportunity to compete and sharpen up for the rest of the season.”

A winner of her second consecutive War On the Shore Tournament, Mutschler’s run comprised falls in 30 and 65 seconds along with an 8-0 major decision to reach the finals, where she decked Quince Orchard junior Isabella Peluso in 2:58.

“The competition at War On The Shore keeps getting better,” said Mutschler, a Beast Of The East runner-up who is ranked sixth nationally at 105 pounds. “Much respect to everyone competing, and it’s back to the lab for me to improve on my skills.”

Tsarni also repeated as War On The Shore champion in dominant fashion on falls on 26, 35 and 43 seconds to go with another in Quince Orchard senior Amirah Abegesah, a returning third-place finisher at states.

“Getting a win at War On The Shore was really heart-warming since I was able to do it alongside my friends,” said Tsarni, who is 12th-ranked nationally at 145 pounds. “Seeing how we came together and inspired local girls in Maryland means a lot to me. I hope to see this sport grow more within Maryland and to see more success among these girls. They work hard and deserve it.”

The runner-up Cougars crowned a pair of champions in sophomore Denna Momeni (155) and junior Aubry Spadoni (170), as did third-place Stephen Decatur in sophomore Calleigh McBride (100) and junior Irie Carmack (125).

Momeni earned falls in 23 and 79 seconds before winning her semifinal, 18-10, over top-seeded Winters Mill senior Maiah Sweet, who wrestled back to third place. Momeni decked Eastern Tech’s Hannah Hickman at 2:08 of their title match.

“It felt really good to know that all of the hard work and extra work that I’ve done is paying off. I feel like I have confidence to compete with anyone,” said Momeni, whose record improved to 9-0.

“I’ve put the work in. We have a really strong group of girls this season. We’re dedicated and locked in. What we lack in numbers, we make up for with toughness and work ethic.”

Spadoni won her first bout by 13-2 major decision before picking up steam with falls at 43 seconds and in 2:27 of her championship match with junior Esmeralda Serrano of Catasauqua.

“I had been sick for the past week, so I was kind of surprised that I did so well. But my coaches had faith in me and my teammates had faith in me. That’s all I needed. I’d put the work in and it was time to handle my business,” said Spadoni, whose record is 7-0. “I think we have a really good team this year, with a good mix of youth and experience. But we have some flaws that we need to work on before states. We have big goals in mind for this year.”

After winning her first bout by 14-0 major decision, McBride registered consecutive falls in 3:49 and 2:53, the last in her championship match with Quinlan.

Carmack’s run comprised pins in 31 and 32 seconds, a 17-1 technical fall and a 93-second title match fall against sophomore Danielle Wood of Leonardtown.

Other champions were Gwynn Park seniors Jada Agurs (105) and Parkside senior Catherine (Mable) Woodgeard (120).

Agurs decked all four of her opponents by registering pins in 17 and 37 seconds as well as in 1:51 in addition to planting Winters Mill senior Alexa Hresko 39 seconds into their title match.

Woodgeard pinned all three of her rivals with falls in 58 seconds, 3:51 and 5:54 of her championship match with Woodbridge, Virginia senior Ella Devore.
