C. Milton, Oakland Mills, Calvert Hall - Top 3 at SnOverlea

C. Milton Wright’s fourth-ranked senior Aaron Moccia (190) scored three first-period pins and was among three champions, six finalists and 11 wrestlers who placed within the top four of their divisions as the Mustangs won this weekend’s SnOverlea Tournament at Overlea High.

Moccia was joined on the victory podium by freshman Lucas Heffner (106) and senior Jacob Cox (126), with runners-up in sophomore Rory Sweeney (120), junior Salokhiddin Dusmukhamedov (157) and senior Dylan Roche (150).

Finishing third were juniors Zain Ahmad (113), Harrison Sherly (138), Logan Layne (144) and senior Sean Downey (132), with senior Carson Windesheim (165) placing fourth as the Mustangs (255 points) outlasted second-place Oakland Mills (243).

Moccia improved his record on the year to 23-2 on falls in 24, 91 and 81 seconds, the last in his championship match against Pikeville junior Wylee Tom-Ehiemua.

Moccia was a week removed from a loss at The Iron Horse Duals at C. Milton Wright by 3-0 decision to top-ranked senior Pete Snyder of Stephen Decatur.

Snyder had won the War On The Shore Tournament on the weekend of Jan. 9-10 at 215 pounds, and Moccia did the same at 190, becoming the Mustangs’ first-ever War On The Shore champion.

Moccia’s only other setback was by major decision to Rising Sun's second-ranked senior Zach Garvin, who has earned three straight Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference (UCBAC) titles, two regional crowns in three championship berths, and had placed sixth, fifth and first at the past three Class 2A-1A state tournaments.

“I feel like I have improved since my loss to Zach Garvin. My hand-fighting and my work from the bottom position is a lot better,” said Moccia, who earned titles in last year’s UCBAC and Class 2A-1A North Regional tournaments.

“Those aspects were among the key points in the match I felt led to my loss to Zach. Currently one of my main motivations is for us to win at the state duals and for me to win an individual state title.”

Heffner used a 95-second pin to reach his title match, where he took 4:20 to deck Oakland Mills sophomore Mikey Clark.

Heffner was also a week removed from the Iron Horse Duals, where he went 6-0, with one of his two first-period pins lasting 41 seconds.

“Lucas is an accomplished junior league wrestler,” said ninth-year coach John Thornton, a 1999 graduate of C. Milton Wright and former state champion went 37-0 as a senior and twice earned Harford County and regional titles.

“Lucas took fifth at the MSWA states last year, and he’s got a record of 20-2 this season with wins over several ranked kids, including [21st-ranked] Caiden Hickey of [North East-Cecil County.] Lucas’ only losses were at The War On The Shore.”

Hickey is a sophomore who placed third and second in last year’s UCBAC and Class 2A-1A East Regional tournaments.

Cox’s run comprised a 98-second pin, a 16-0 technical fall and a 13-7 championship decision over Dunbar’s Cody Hizer.

The runner-up Scorpions crowned top-ranked senior Raul Rodriguez (165), freshman Ramon Rodriguez (120), sophomore Alpha Bah (113), senior Matthew Cowen (138) and sophomore Sam Rivera-Cifuentes of Oakland Mills.

Raul Rodriguez’s record improved to 29-0 thanks to his use of an 88-second pin and a 21-5 technical fall to reach his title match for an 11-4 decision over Jackson-Reed senior Alex Ouzts.

A defending champion in the District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association (DCIAA), Ouzts was a week removed from winning his second straight title at the Springbrook tournament after placing third once.

Raul Rodriguez is a returning Class 4A-3A state runner-up and two-time Howard County and regional champion whose record was 33-4 last year.

Raul’s brother Ramon Rodriguez’s run comprised a fall in 1:44, an 8-1 decision and a 6-3 championship win over Sweeney, a returning UCBAC champion who was fourth at regions.

Cowen used a 41-second fall and a 4-1 decision to reach the finals, where he decked Boys Latin sophomore Devon Pringle in 4:57.

Rivera-Cifuentes earned a 21-6 technical fall and a 57-pin before winning his title match by 12-5 decision over Roche. Bah won his championship bout, 7-6, over Dunbar’s Douglass Alegria.

Calvert Hall crowned seventh-ranked junior Izaac Robertucci (175) and 11th-ranked senior Joshua Jackson (144), the latter of whom placed sixth and seventh at the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and Maryland Independent/Private School’s State Tournaments.

Robertucci earned three technical fall victories comprising those by scores of 16-1, 20-4 and 18-0, the last against Lansdowne’s senior Chase Swiger

Robertucci placed third and fourth at last year’s MIAAs and private school states, and Swiger is a returning Baltimore County Tournament runner-up who is ranked seventh at 190 pounds.

Jackson dominated using a 26-second pin and consecutive technical falls by scores of 17-2 and 20-5, the last in his championship match with Dunbar’s Jabari Jenkins.

Other champions were Boys Latin’s 14th-ranked junior Cooper Monroe (132), 24th-ranked Patapsco senior John Martin (215), Jackson-Reed junior Nikita Andrew (157) and Lansdowne senior Alex Soria Espinoza (285).

Monroe earned an 18-1 technical fall before winning his title by 18-6 major decision over Dunbar’s Jeremiah Wise.

Martin’s three pins comprised those in 18 seconds, 2:00 and 36 seconds, the last against senior Amari Lonesome of Baltimore City College.

Andrew won by fall in 3:14 before earning consecutive decisions by scores of 6-0 and 7-1, the latter in his title match with Dusmukhamedov.

Espinoza earned pins in 2:33 and 3:36 to reach his championship bout for a 7-2 decision over Calvert Hall sophomore Jalen Tartar.
