The weather outside has been chilly and frightful, but Harford Tech junior Emily Wockenfuss brought the heat into Saturday's Divas Of The Den Tournament at Severn Run High.
Wockenfuss demonstrated why she is Maryland's sixth-ranked 145 pounder, decking her semifinal opponent in 3:05 before dominating Kenwood sophomore Gabby Hernandez-Troch by 17-2 technical fall in their championship match.
"Despite the snow's impact, The Divas Of The Den was a great tournament for our girls to go to," Wockenfuss said. "It's amazing to watch how much this sport has grown for women, and it feels awesome to get to be a part of it."
Joining Wockenfuss on the victory podium were eighth-ranked freshman Sofie French (115) and junior Samantha Keithly (155) among six finalists and seven wrestlers who finished within the top three of their weights as the Cobras (165 points) outlasted the host and runner-up Wolves (148).
Runners-up for the Cobras were 14th-ranked junior Rylee Quigley (140) and sophomore Gracie Vickers (130), with sophomore Zoe Sanders (135) and freshman Alayna Dolzine (235) being third.
“This is their first-ever team tournament victory, and I'm incredibly proud of our ladies for their performance. We’re gearing up for a deep postseason run and can’t wait," said coach Marcus Webster, whose Cobras have a dual meet record of 4-1. "Our Queen Cobras have competed in some of the toughest tournaments this season, and a team championship at Divas at the Den was the capstone of a great season."
Keithly earned consecutive pins in 3:24 and 2:39, the second against championship match rival Jasmine Brock, a sophomore from Kenwood. French won her title match by 17-2 technical fall over Southern-Anne Arundel sophomore Brianna Barrios.
French followed up her championship performance at the Jan. 16-17 “Who’s No. 1” Girls’ Tournament at Northeast High, where she won her semifinal by 44-second fall before winning her title bout by 10-3 decision over Patterson Mill’s ninth-ranked senior Sarah Alkhatib.
"This felt very special, because it was my first tournament win against other strong wrestlers," said Wockenfuss, who was fourth at The “Who’s No. 1” Girls’ Tournament where Keithley finished sixth. "It meant so much for our Queen Cobras to win in the team aspect of this tournament, especially since I've watched Harford Tech's girls program grow from just three of us."
Runner-up Severn Run's champions were junior Audrey Catrambone (125) and senior Katrina Adhikari (235), with Catrambone decking Catonsville's Haley Nguyen at 2:23 of their title match. Adhikari won her semifinal by 46-second fall but required an 8-7 decision to win her crown over Kenwood senior Zoey Lam.
Lam is rated seventh by Legacy wrestling. It was believed Adhikari had graduated and why she is not in the report. We only see limited girls results and this is the first time we’ve marked an appearance from Adhikari.
Edgewood crowned sibling champions in sophomore Isabella Rodriguez-Dodson (110) and junior Mariana Rodriguez-Dodson (105) along with third-ranked senior Triniti Green (130).
Green registered falls in 41 and 66 seconds, the latter in her championship bout with Vickers. Isabella pinned twice comprising falls in 2:00 and 2:59, the latter in her title match with Kenwood freshman Dallas Caldwell. Mariana was crowned uncontested as the lone entry.
Southern-Anne Arundel's title winners were senior Crystalina Lackey (100) and junior Nita Henderson (170). Henderson decked two opponents by pins in 1:44 and in 1:52 of her finals' bout with Severn Run junior De-Shanti Gregory. Lackey won her title by fall in 2:43 over Severn Run freshman Brynn Pollack.
Other girls champions were Great Mills freshman Audrey Bowes (120), Severn School freshman Logan Rozanski (135), Kenwood sophomore Tyliah Smith (140), and Carver A&T freshman Madisen Neal (190).
Bowes earned consecutive pins in 84 seconds and 4:22, the second in her title match with Catonsville's Sky Mikow. Rozanski earned pins in 92 and 88 seconds, the last in her title match against Caver A&T junior Keira McLendon.
Smith recorded a fall in 3:30 and another against Quigley in 46 seconds. Neal earned a 99-second pin and a 23-5 technical fall in her championship bout with Great Mills sophomore Viandra Bryan.
