Eastern Tech was crowned team champions at the 2025 Baltimore County Girls Wrestling Tournament at CCBC in Essex on Saturday. The Mavericks pushed six into the finals, and saw four of them secure gold medals, No. 2 Ariana Carnahan (110), Ali Franze (125), Mackenzie Jones (130), and No. 2 Morgan Linton (170), to outpace Sparrows Point, 183-136.
“I’m pretty happy about it.” Eastern Tech coach Rob Sullivan said. “We were a little worried because we’ve lost a couple girls the last couple weeks from injuries. One was sick this morning, one of our girls that was seeded first. So, we were a little nervous, but we thought we were still going to be able to pull this off. I feel really solid going into the postseason. Some of the girls got some wake up calls they needed today. That’s kind of what you want heading into the regionals and states.”
Carnahan improved on her second-place finish last year at the hands of Perry Hall’s Alaina Kopalchick, who she should would go on to beat at states, by posting a dominate 13-1 major decision of No. 6 Leian Wright (Western Tech).
We caught up with Ariana mat side, watching her brother, Chase, claim the 120lb gold for Sparrows Point moments after her match. They were both the third match on each card and are the first brother and sister to claim crowns together in Baltimore County history.
“I wrestled her a couple times this year, so I think this was my third time beating her this year,” Carnahan continued. “But she’s definitely my toughest competitor I’ve seen all season long. I’m super excited. Hopefully my little brother will follow me up here and get a title too.”
Linton was also second a year ago falling to Randallstown’s three-time state champ Ugochi Anunobi in the finals by fall. As a senior, Linton was the one doing the pinning, registering hers at 1:43 versus No. 17 Maddie MacKenzie (Towson).
Franze is unranked in the state and faced off with Sparrows Point’s Tinsley Jones (No. 18 at 130). Franze, a senior, authored a 9-4 upset of Jones to stake claim to her first county championship.
“(I was thinking) that I had to work really hard to get it and it wasn’t easy,” Franze said. “I’ve done it before (beating a ranked opponent) and can do it again. I’m really proud of myself, (it’s my) senior year.”
Jones decked the Points’ Kylie Keefer in the first period for her title, 1:30. Placing second for the Mavericks were No. 18 Kyrah Proctor (135) and No. 9 Arianna King (190).
Four other Eastern Tech girls reached the podium, two in the third position, Kira Crockett (115) and Isabella Simon (140), and two others coming in fifth, No. 9 Mya Mullineaux (100) and Genevieve Gamero (105).
Sparrows Point placed four in the gold medal races but only hit on one of them, Grace Paesch, who stuck Catonsville’s Isabella Kight in the third period, 5:39, at 140lbs.
Tinsley Jones was one of the Pointer’s silver medalists along with Keefer and Skyler Leopold (235). Placing third was Gabby Campbell (110). Gabryela Stein Ebanks was fourth at 135. Landing in the fifth spot were Lelanni Elliott (120), Alyssa McDonald (145), and Autumn Willis (155). Jenna Greensfelder was sixth at 170.
Kenwood was third with 106.5 points. Their highest placer was No. 7 Brooke Jones’ second at 105. Anayah Stokes was third at 125. Taking fourth were No. 17 Thurayah Mohamed (100), Aryannah Burley (120), Gabriela Hernandez-Troches (145), Alainna McLaughlin (155), and Jasmine Brook (170). Kayla Jacobs was fifth at 115lbs.
Randallstown (95 points) was fourth with two champions, No. 4 Wura Idowu (105) and No. 3 Deagan Bishop (155). Both used pins to win their titles.
After being third here a year ago a 33 second ending to Kenwood’s Jones’ day propelled Idowu to the top spot in the county.
“(I’m) very happy, very happy,” exuded Idowu. “I was just like wow (to win with a pin). I was contemplating what I was going to do the whole time, so I got the headlock, and I was like, thank you, thank you."
Bishop, a junior like Idowu, was also third at last year’s edition. Bishop flattened No. 9 Kayla Carter (Franklin) in just over a minute, 1:06.
“It felt amazing,” Bishop exclaimed. “That’s my first time. So, I’m really proud of myself. I’ve been working all summer with my friend Ugochi (Anunobi). She’s been beating me up all summer to be able to beat other girls up in season, So, I just feel alive. I get to take that medal home. I get to take that bracket home. I’m going to continue to work because next week is regional champ again, then state champ.”
Patapsco’s two champs helped them to a seventh-place finish. Like Randallstown, their finalists also pinned their foes for the glory.
Junior Gianna Guarnera (No. 10 at 140) secured her third county crown with a 42 second fall over Eastern Tech’s Proctor at 135.
“It felt quick,” Guarnera remarked. “My adrenaline was pushing me. Everything was there, I felt the right moment, and I just took it. It’s my third one, so same thoughts as last year, and the year before, and next year, too.”
No. 4 Ashari Willis’s adversary was Eastern Tech’s top ten King in the 190lb final. A sack at the 2:37 mark of the second period gave Willis her second consecutive gold. Last year’s was won, 1-0, over King.
“You just gotta work with the flow,” Willis added. “It’s a lot of heart. I put a lot of heart into it. I gotta take first again, second year, my senior year. I gotta do my big one. I doubted myself a little bit. I just overthink a lot. But I love it. Wrestling is everything for me. I knew I had it, it wasn’t nothing but don’t ever be too cocky, because you may lose. So, I gave myself a little more boost, but I wasn’t too cocky. I just live for the moment.”
Perry Hall’s Kopalchick won the 120lb final in a battle of two wrestlers ranked at different weights. Legacy had Kopalchick as No. 3 at 110 and her opponent Catonsville’s Sky Mikow as No. 15 at 126. Koplachick’s 16-1 technical fall secured her third county championship. As a freshman, Kopalchick placed in the coed brackets.
“Placing in boys counties my freshmen year was a big accomplishment for me because I made history doing so,” said Kopalchick. “After I hit that goal, I decided to shift to the girls side in which I’ve successfully done by earning three BCPS titles at three different weights. I’ve always set goals for myself and have achieved some pretty cool things along the way. I’m continuing to grow in the sport of wrestling and I’m ready to take on another regional title.”
Two girls who were third in the county last year now stand as champions, Dundalk’s No. 9 Emily Cabo (115) and Hereford’s No. 14 Julia Abel (100). Cabo spent 11 seconds on the mat before putting Hereford’s Priya Buie asleep.
Abel spent a little more time than that to gain her gold but came in under a minute with a 54 second pin of Parkville’s Erin Smith. Smith, who is not ranked, pinned No.8 Lizmarie Jimenez (Dundalk) in the semis, 4:44.
“I’m very excited,” Abel added. “It was nerve wracking. But I’m glad I got to be the county champ. I feel really happy because it’s a big jump for me (from third to first).”
At 235, No. 3 Madison Drumwright of Milford Mill decked Point’s Leopold in the middle frame, 2:51. Catonsville’s Kate Roberson is the 145lb champ after sticking Carver A&T’s Tatiana Ricks in 3:01.
