FREDERICK COUNTY AND MIDDLETOWN

Middletown's sixth-ranked senior Carter Canale (165) earned his second straight title among three champions, six finalists and 10 wrestlers who finished within the top four of their weight classes as the sixth-ranked host Knights (172.5 points) overcame 17th-ranked runner-up Linganore (120.5) to win their fourth Frederick County Tournament crown in the past five years.

Canale improved his record on the year to 37-2 for the Knights (34-0), who accomplished the feat a week after winning the Class 2A state dual meet championship with a 36-31 victory over 12th-ranked Huntingtown.

A returning champion in the Class 2A-1A West Region tournament who was a Class 2A-1A state runner-up last year, Canale is coached by Chad Strube, a former two-time Class 2A-1A state champion in 2009 and 2010 after placing second as a freshman and fourth as a sophomore for Middletown.

Brunswick’s top-ranked senior Seth Crawford (150) improved his record on the year to 43-1 with his third straight crown and will pursue his third consecutive regional title after having placed second and third at Class 2A-1A states.

Crawford also owns a fall this year over Richard Montgomery's eighth-ranked senior Isisah Womack (144), a two-time Montgomery County Tournament champion who went 44-0 last year and won regional and Class 4A-3A state titles.

SOUTHERN MARYLAND ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Huntingtown's top-ranked junior Landen Vercoe (144) won his third straight crown among four champions, seven finalists and eight wrestlers who finished within the top four of their weight classes as the 12th-ranked Hurricanes earned their third straight Southern Maryland Athletic Conference title at LaPlata.

The Hurricanes (195.5 points) overcame runner-up 31st-ranked Northern-Calvert (178) led by Vercoe, who improved his record on the year to 44-1 with 24 pins and 11 technical falls, will attempt to win his third Class 2A-1A South Region title this weekend, and has placed second and third at Class 2A-1A states.

Vercoe has split-victories with second-ranked Tyler Stephens of Mount St. Joseph, a winner of titles in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and Maryland Independent Schools' State Tournaments. Crawford was a loser of a 6-0 decision to Vercoe, who bumped up to 150 pounds to face him.

Lackey’s fourth-ranked junior Ethan Vayro (175) was named Outstanding Wrestler after improving 40-0 with 27 pins and six technical falls while earning his second straight SMAC championship. Vayro will pursue his second consecutive Class 2A-1A South and Class 2A-1A state crowns over the next two weekends.

UPPER CHESAPEAKE BAY ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

C. Milton Wright’s fourth-ranked senior Aaron Moccia (190) earned his second straight title among three champions, five finalists and nine wrestlers who finished within their weight classes as the 24th-ranked Mustangs rolled to their second straight Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference crown and their third in the past five years.

Moccia earned crowns in last year’s UCBAC and Class 2A-1A North Regional tournaments for the Mustangs (224.5 points), who outdistanced 23rd-ranked runner-up Rising Sun (208.5).

The Mustangs' ninth-year coach is John Thornton, a 1999 graduate of C. Milton Wright and former state champion went 37-0 as a senior and twice earned Harford County and regional titles.

Among Moccia’s setback this year was by major decision to Rising Sun's second-ranked senior Zach Garvin (175), who earned his fourth straight UCBAC title. Garvin will pursue his third regional crown in four championship berths, and has placed sixth, fifth and first at the past three Class 2A-1A state tournaments.

ALLEGANY/GARRETT BI-COUNTY TOURNAMENT

Northern-Garrett's sixth-ranked senior Devon Opel (132) won his fourth title and was among seven champions, eight finalists and 11 wrestlers who finished within the top four of their weight classes as the 31st-ranked host Huskies won the Bi-County Tournament for the sixth straight time and the eighth overall.

The Huskies (185 points) overcame runner-up Southern-Garrett (143) led by Opel, a returning wrestler who has placed second twice at both regions and Class 2A-1A states and will attempt to improve on those efforts over the next two weekends.
