Legacy Westling is excited to roll out the first ever edition of Maryland Female High School Rankings. We began this journey last year with creating the first ever MD Girls All Star team to highlight the accomplished wrestlers across the state. We always knew we wanted to do more and to watch those wrestlers so that we could begin to create female wrestler rankings.
Well wrestling super fans - that day is today! .
We have started with a top ten list at each weight and we hope to expand to a top 15 as the season progresses. Since the state tournament places six, and there is no girls’ private school states, we feel 15 is very fair to paint a picture of girls wrestling in Maryland.
Right now, we lack the insight we have with the boys rankings so please be patient with us. With time and feedback from the community we will have a greater grasp of the girls’ side of things. We used every tournament from last season to arrive at these rankings. Individual tracking sheets were created for each wrestler to log accomplishments as well as key wins and losses.
These sheets allow us to easily look at someone’s whole season and compare them side by side. We can explain the rationale for all the decisions. It’s not just as simple as these are the top six placers from states, so they are the top six. To do proper rankings, you need to dig deeper than that and we have begun that process.
You will notice that there are not many private school wrestlers in these rankings. They were not at many of the girls’ tournaments last year, so if we are overlooking anyone, please reach out to us and let us know. But please, don’t just give us a name – give us the reason why they should be included (their wins and losses) so we can begin to log and track them.
We will update these as often as necessary. Typically, the updates will come after tournaments. Looking at last year’s timeline, there were not many idle weeks, so these will likely be updated weekly.
We are excited to see these athletes compete this year and to solidify who is on top!
