Friar Duals Rundown

Freshmen Dominic Blocker (106) and Jake Bittinger (120), sophomore Josiah Williamson (215), seventh-ranked junior Oscar Davis (150) and 12th-ranked senior Bailen Boutz (190) all finished at 8-0 in leading 12th-ranked host Archbishop Curley to the title in last weekend’s Friar Duals.

While the Friars vanquished runner-up Severna Park, 38-32, Century, Poly and Wilmington Charter of Delaware finished in a round-robin, three-way tie. Criteria awarded third place to Century, followed by Wilmington Charter (fourth) and Poly (fifth).

The tournament victory was the third of the year for the Friars, whose coach, Paul Boettcher, is a 1999 graduate of Archbishop Curley and a former Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and private schools state champion.

The Friars won the season-opening Knightmare Invitational at Parkville for the second straight season. The Friars also earned the crown at 13th-ranked Gilman’s Adam Janet Invitational, overcoming a host and runner-up Greyhounds squad which tied top-ranked Archbishop Spalding for last year’s Maryland Independent/Private Schools' title a week after being dethroned by the Cavaliers as Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament champions.

“I’m very pleased with how we competed as a team this weekend and where we are right now as a program,” said Boettcher, who was particularly pleased that Blocker earned pins in 14, 26 and 27 seconds to go with a 20-2 technical fall. “We’re a very young roster, but guys are starting to find their stride as we get into the second half of the season. Again, we were not at full strength, but other guys stepped up and filled in.”

A returning third place finisher at MIAAs who was fifth at private school states, Boutz was voted Outstanding Upperweight, with five of his six pins being in the first period.

Boutz registered falls in 16, 34, 65, 81 and 84 seconds, nailed down another in 2:27, and also won a match by 14-2 major decision.

Davis’ four falls comprised those in 28, 80, 82 and 83 seconds to go with a pair of major decisions and a 4-3 overtime victory over Poly’s 12th-ranked senior Derrel Davis, who went 7-1.

Derrel rose from 144 pounds to face Oscar, who was fourth at both MIAAs and private school states last year.

Another of Oscar’s victories was a 12-2 major decision over 12th-ranked senior Aiden Holly of Severna Park, who placed fifth and fourth in last year’s Anne Arundel County and regional tournaments.

Williamson earned five of his six falls in the first period, comprising those in 38, 55 and 89 seconds along with two others in 1:54 and exactly two minutes, respectively. Williamson also pinned an opponent in 3:15 and won a pair of decisions.

Bittinger registered pins in 55 and 70 seconds, planted another opponent in 1:51 and earned a 12-1 major decision. Bittinger also secured a 14-12 victory over Century’s Justus Bokrosh, who went 7-1 with three pins and a major decision.

Runner-up Severna Park went 7-1 behind third-ranked senior Michael Queen (126), who has won a pair of Anne Arundel County titles in three championship berths, two regional crowns in three title bout appearances, and finished second and third at states over the past two seasons.

Queen was named Outstanding Lightweight with four pins and a 7-0 decision over the Friars’ 14th-ranked sophomore Evan Kaliakoudas, who has placed fourth at MIAAs and fifth at states.

“I’ve had a really good start to my season, and I really appreciated receiving the Outstanding Wrestler Award,” said Queen, whose record on the year is 22-0 with 14 pins and a technical fall, raising his career mark to 150-12.

“This year, my team’s success has really made the season enjoyable. For the rest of the season, the plan is to continue to be the same, checking off one goal at a time. My top goal is to continue being successful and to complete senior year in a healthy manner.”

Severna Park’s Brody Clark (132) and William Abboud (138) went 8-0 and 6-0, respectively.

Clark earned pins in 68 and 78 seconds along with three technical falls comprising those by scores of 16-1, 17-2 and 19-2. Clark also earned an 11-1 major decision.

Abboud had two pins, a major decision and a pair of decisions, with one being an overtime, 6-3, victory against Ryan Smith of Charter School of Wilmington, Delaware.

12th-ranked Derrel Davis earned pins in 37, 67, 81 and 95 seconds to go with another in 1:51 as well as a 15-0 technical fall and a 12-3 major decision.

A winner of a pair of Baltimore City crowns in three title match berths, Derrel Davis has placed second once, and fourth, twice at regions. Davis collected his 100th career victory against Dundalk’s Caiden Merrill, whom he decked in 1:51.

Century’s 10th-ranked sophomore Eli Stein (113) went 8-0 with six first-period pins and a 9-4 decision over the Friars’ 14th-ranked sophomore Liam Rose.

A third- and fourth-place finisher in the Carroll County and regional tournaments, Stein had falls in 34 and 44 seconds as well as two more in 59 seconds, another in 62 seconds and the last in 1:45.

Dundalk’s Dylan Holt (285) went 8-0 with three of his five pins being in the first period. Holt earned falls in 51, 55 and 96 seconds to go with others in 2:36 and 2:56.
