FSK Girls Holiday Showcase Highlights!

Winters Mill seniors Amelia Boddie (125) and Maiah Sweet (155) were champions among four finalists and seven top-four place-winners as the Eagles (135.5 points) outlasted runner-up host and Carroll County rival Francis Scott Key (118) for the crown at the Eagles’ Girls’ Holiday Showcase Tournament crown on Dec. 30.

Not only do Boddie and Sweet have identical records this season of 7-0 with six pins and a forfeit, but each won The Showcase by pinning all three opponents in the first period.

“I really wanted a trophy,” said Sweet, a seventh-ranked two-time county and regional champion who nailed down falls in 71 and 89 seconds before decking North Point senior Alyssa Placek at 1:41 of their title match.

Boddie registered pins in 32, 80 and 67 seconds, the last in her championship bout against Frederick sophomore Jada Hall.

“I was ready to wrestle six minutes,” said Boddie, a returning county champion. “I went in focused on effort rather than the result and trusted the work I had put in.”

Runners-up for the Falcons seniors Kaitlyn Lemerise (105) and Carli Ireland (115), the latter of whom is ranked eighth.

Placing third were 12th-ranked senior Christina Padilla (110) and senior Ahmya Gerald (140), with a fourth-place effort from senior Nijae Tate (100).

“Last year I truly felt like Winters Mill was the best girls' team in the state. We decisively dealt with defending champs Queens Anne's and third place team Tuscarora. Had there been a girl's state duals or if they balanced the regions correctly, we would have a state championship banner in our gym right now. This isn't the same team as last year, we aren't quite as deep, and we’re missing a few weight classes, but the girls on this team embody what it means to be a wrestler,” said coach John Fisher, whose Falcons are two-time defending county tournament champions with a current dual meet record of 6-0.

“We aren't just throwing headlocks and seatbelt rolls. We go forward, score takedowns, and put girls on their back. Amelia is down from 140 to 125. She has been training with Headhunters and Grindstone Wrestling Club all off season. She has been chasing mat time and competition to try to reach that next level at the state tournament. Maiah probably would have been a state finalist last year at 155, if four-time state placer and three-time finalist Gabby McLeod wasn't on our team. With Gabby gone, it is Maiah's time to shine and the whole state should be on notice. Her mindset this season is to keep it simple and be unstoppable and so far, that's the case.”

The Eagles crowned eighth-ranked junior Maddy Johnson (115), who decked Ireland at 5:03 of their title match after scoring pins in 2:47 and 3:09.

Third-place La Plata’s lone champion was junior Lauren Jackson (145), whose 32-second pin preceded her championship bout fall in 3:56 over Century sophomore Ryleigh Gittermann.

North Point crowned a pair of champions in fourth-ranked junior Alexis Metzgar (105) and 10th-ranked senior Saniya Wheeler (100), as did Frederick in Sha’Niyah Goines (110) and Candide Affo (120).

Metzgar used a 66-second fall to reach the title match, where she overcame Lemerise by 13-6 decision.

Wheeler earned pins in 39 and 47 seconds to reach the finals, where her fall in 3:22 finished off 15th-ranked senior Ellie Kinloch of Francis Scott Key.

Goines earned a 27-second fall against Padilla before scoring another in 51 seconds and her last in 2:32 of her title bout with Westminster’s Scarlett Malinski.

Affo used an 89-second pin and a 14-7 decision to reach the finals, where she decked Northwest sophomore Gabrielle Arguello in 71 seconds.

Other champions were third-ranked sophomore Akasha Fernandez (130) of Linganore, fifth-ranked senior Madison Drumwright (235) of Milford Mill, fifth-ranked junior Estrella Edwards (190) of Richard Montgomery and junior Lexi Vosburg (140) of Chesapeake-Anne Arundel County.

Fernandez won her title match by 15-0 technical fall over Westminster’s Cheyenne Caple after having earned pins in 41 seconds and 5:14.

Drumwright won her championship bout, 9-5, over LaPlata sophomore Taylor Breckenridge after pinning her semifinal opponent in 1:43.

Edwards won a 4-0 decision before nailing down pins in 4:30 and 2:21, the last in the finals against Francis Scott Key’s Emily Arboleda.

Vosburg sandwiched a pin in 1:53 between technical falls of 21-5 and 22-7, the last in her championship match with Esther Malaney of Baltimore Poly.

In the Co-ed tournament, the Eagles (145.5 points) crowned senior Carroll County runner-up Corey Stouffer (285) and junior Jesse Owings (150) but were nevertheless distant runners-up to Delaware power Caesar Rodney (231.5), which earned seven individual titles.

Stouffer registered pins in 91 seconds and at 4:57 of his championship match with Caesar Rodney junior Aaden Carney.

A returning third-place finisher at counties and regions, Owings scored a 34-second fall before winning an 8-4 decision in his title match with Caesar Rodney junior Miguel Sigaran.

Third place Forest Park received a pair of titles from senior Baltimore City champion Chad Dickerson (215) and Daerin Curry (106), as did Quince Orchard in fifth-ranked senior Ziya Khozugov (175) and junior Ryan Frost (175).

Curry earned falls in 31 and 65 seconds, the last in his title bout with Ethan Hicks of Francis Scott Key. Dickerson won his championship match by injury default over Quince Orchard senior Alek Malinowski.

A regional champion who was fifth in the Montgomery County and Class 4A-3A state tournaments, Khozugov used a 21-6 technical fall and an 89-second pin to reach the title match.

Khozugov won his championship bout by an 18-5 major decision over 11th-ranked junior Max Birth of Walkersville, who is a returning Frederick County Tournament runner-up.

Frost had a pair of pins comprising those in 96 seconds and 3:36 of his championship match with Francis Scott Key junior Ben Tabor.

Overlea’s lone title-winner was senior Donovan Austin (120), who was fifth and fourth in the Baltimore County and regional tournaments last year.

Austin used pins in 1:47 and 2:17 to reach the finals, where his fall in 2:54 overcame Caesar Rodney senior Ashton Graham.
