Mount St. Joseph’s third-ranked freshman Brooklyn Pickett had an 8-0 record in Saturday’s Demolition Duals hosted by the fourth-ranked Gaels, including a 6-1 decision over top-ranked senior Evan Boblits of St. Mary’s Ryken.

Pickett was named Outstanding Wrestler for his performance, which included a fall in 3:08 over fourth-ranked senior Griffin Stewart of Calvert Hall, a former National Prep Tournament placer, and another in 34 seconds against 25th-ranked senior Peyton Miller of Broadneck.

“Brooklyn is one of the most transitional wrestlers that I have seen in a long time” St. Joe coach Harry Barnabae said. “His perception of his opponents’ reactions and his lightning speed make him very dangerous.

“Going into the week before the tournament Brooklyn asked if we were going to wrestle St Mary's Ryken, and if so, could he wrestle Evan at 150 lbs. Brooklyn is always looking to challenge the most accomplished wrestlers around his weight class, and Evan Boblits is certainly one of the best, not only in Marylan, but on a national level.”

The Gaels (12-1) defeated the 15th-ranked St. Mary’s Ryken Knights, 50-25, in the semifinals, and runner-up Xavier of Connecticut, 38-30, in the finals.

Pickett was among six wrestlers who went 8-0 for the Gaels, who have won 10 consecutive dual meets since losing, 37-35, to top-ranked, defending Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association champion Gilman on January 15.

Among the Gaels’ recent triumphs are those over fifth-ranked Loyola, 39-34, on January 17, and eighth-ranked McDonogh, 46-24, on January 21, each of them being MIAA league matches.

Committed to the Naval Academy, Boblits is a three-time Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title-winner who has earned one private schools state title in a pair of championship bout appearances and placed fourth and fifth in the National Preps Tournament. Boblits missed the state tournament due to illness in his sophomore year, which also kept him out of National Preps.

It is worth examining the substance in the accomplishments of Boblits, who went 7-1 with a pin and a major decision, in order to further appreciate the nature, relevance and significance of Pickett’s scoring differential against him.

During the War on The Shore finals on January 4, for example, Boblits earned a 1-0 decision over second-ranked, 150-pound senior Calvin Kraisser of Centennial, who is projected to win his fourth straight Maryland Public Schools state title in March.

Boblits also has a legendary series with Gilman graduate Tyson Sherlock comprising his three, one-point victories that include a pair of overtime rideout wins to counter Boblits’ 3-1 overtime loss to his Greyhounds’ nemesis.

Now a freshman at Davidson University, Sherlock finished second, first and first at MIAAs as sophomore, junior and senior, third, first and second at private school states during those same three years, and fourth, second and first as a freshman, sophomore and junior at the National High School Coaches’ Association National Wrestling Tournament.

Boblits has stated in the past “I feel pretty confident riding legs or defending against someone using legs on me,” but the Knights’ senior was unable to do either against Pickett. In summary, Pickett did to Boblits what neither Sherlock nor Kraisser was able to do.

“I have never wrestled Evan in a match, mostly due to the age difference,” said Pickett. “But we have practiced together for a while even upward from six years ago we would be at the same clinics in Pennsylvania where he would usually beat on me if we were going live. Most recently at Fargo camp we went a few live gos and had simulation matches against one another.”

“My game plan was the same against Evan as it is in every match. Which is to get the first takedown and score more points than my opponent,” Pickett added. “Finally getting this match was more of a relief, than anything, it’s the whole reason I bumped up to 150 lbs. I want to wrestle the best and beat the best. With My high pace wrestling, stance discipline, and just always pressuring forward, I felt it was the difference for keeping his offense at bay.

“On bottom I knew how good of a crab rider he is. Especially using that claw. I’ve wrestled many good crab riders before, so I just trusted my feel and hips on bottom to get out. Not overthinking crucial scores and positions like that will win me more big-time matches in the future, because win or lose it’s always just a wrestling match.”

Miller finished at 8-1 with four technical falls and two pins at the Demolition Duals, having twice finished as an Anne Arundel County Tournament runner-up and placed second and fourth at regions. Stewart was 6-2 with six pins.

Pickett also owns a fall in 3:29 against fifth-ranked senior Braxton McAvey of Saint Frances. McAvey is a transfer from James M. Bennett, where he won 37 bouts last year, was a champion of both the Bayside Conference and Class 2A-1A East Region, and a fourth-place finisher at Class 2A-1A states.

Pickett finished with three pins and two technical falls and is ranked at 144 pounds by Legacy Wrestling as opposed to Boblits, Stewart, Miller and McAvey all being ranked at 150 pounds.

“Mindset wise, every match I don’t view the match as 0-0 to start I always see it as really 3-0 because I know I can get a takedown and if I don’t get a takedown, 4-0 because I know I can get an escape and takedown or I will turn them,” Pickett said. “That mindset I feel pushed me to get a crucial tilt in our match to put me in the lead. Boblits has a great future at the Naval Academy, and it was a honor to be on the mat with him and it was truly God’s grace that we had the opportunity to wrestle.”

Joining Pickett with 8-0 records were top-ranked freshman Corey Brown (106), second-ranked senior Cameron Cannaday (157), third-ranked junior Jake Tamai (126), fifth-ranked sophomore Tyler Stephens (138) and sophomore Connor Allison (144).

Brown had a 15-0 technical fall and six first-period pins comprising those in 10, 13, 19, 30, 40 and 74 seconds. Cannaday had six pins, a 19-3 technical fall and a 10-0 major decision.

Tamai’s six first-period pins included those in 13, 39, 66 and 75 seconds to go with a 15-0 technical fall. Allison had four pins, a pair of technical falls and major decisions by scores of 13-1, and 11-3.

Stephens earned a 17-0 technical fall and pinned five opponents in the first period, including those in 26, 32, 34 and 71 seconds.

Stephens also ground out a 7-4 overtime decision against senior Noah Cuic of New Kent, Va., whose 7-1 record in the tournament included six first-period pins and a technical fall.

Also going undefeated was 18th-ranked junior Maxwell Ohamuo (285) of Calvert Hall at 7-0 with three of his four pins coming in the first period.

Pickett’s record rose to 29-4 on the year. He was second at the Penn Manor Holiday Tournament losing to Kane Lengel (Kennett, PA), 5-4, in the finals.

At the Beast of the East, Pickett beat Lengel, 4-3, in the consolation rounds. Pickett's two losses at the Beast were to No. 8 in the country Eren Sement (Council Rock North, PA), by fall 3:15, and St. Christopher's of Virginia's Walker Turley, 5-2.

At the East Coast Catholic Classic, he picked up his fourth loss in the finals to Declan O'Byrne (Malvern Prep, PA), 4-2.

At 144lbs, O'Byrne is third in the National Prep Rankings, Turley is fifth, and Pickett is sixth. Boblits is No. 4 at 150lbs in those rankings.
