Huntingtown crowned fourth-ranked seniors William Buckler (157) and Blake Ashley (165), sixth-ranked sophomore Landen Vercoe (126), seventh-ranked sophomore Owen Hayden (106), eighth-ranked senior Chase Brooks (190) and 11th-ranked junior William Stewart (132) among their school-record six champions and eight finalists on Saturday to win their second straight Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Tournament at LaPlata High.
Runners-up were 15th-ranked junior Tyler Hayden (175) and 24th-ranked freshman Ezekias Perez (150), with third place finishes from 15th-ranked freshman Kyler Kiessling (120) and 24th-ranked senior Luke Johnson (144), and fourth-place efforts from junior Brady Arigo (138) and senior Ryan Smith (215) as the Hurricanes placed 12 wrestlers within the top four of their weight classes to overcome runner-up Lackey, 276-to-158.5, as well as 30th-ranked third-place LaPlata (153.5).
Owen Hayden, Vercoe and Brooks earned their second straight crowns, and Ashley improved on his runner-up finish of a year ago.
Vercoe and Tyler Hayden were first in the Class 2A-1A South Region and third at Class 2A-1A states last year. Ashley was first and fourth, and Owen Hayden was first and fifth. Brooks was a fourth-place regional finisher.
Buckler transferred from St. Mary’s Ryken where he placed third, second, and fourth in the private schools state tournament and seventh at the National Prep Tournament as a sophomore.
Buckler improved his record on the year to 18-1 with a 4-2 title-bout victory that dethroned ninth-ranked Leonardtown senior AJ Kuntz, a returning regional champion who was third at Class 4A-3A states last year. Kuntz is 39-3.
The triumph comes a week after the Hurricanes (29-5) dethroned 17th-ranked Stephen Decatur, 51-22, for the Class 2A state dual meet championship. This season marks the second time the Hurricanes are dual and tournament champions of the SMAC along with being state dual title winners. The feat was first accomplished in 2018 where that team still holds the record for the most points scored in the SMAC tournament with 288. That team had 12 placers in the top 3 and all 14 placed in the top 5.
Huntingtown won the SMAC and state duals titles in 2018 according to first-year coach Jake Kramer, who credits assistants Tommy Hayden, Jason Kiessling, Dylan Riegel and Jacob Wood for this year’s success.
"First of all, I can’t say enough about the coaches we have. They set goals at the beginning of the year and have motivated all the wrestlers all year long. "They pushed these boys in the practice room to be the best and it has shown on the mat; every match this season. The success of this season comes from all of them," Kramer said. "I am just the organizer of all the chaos that comes along with a sport like wrestling. I am super proud of each and every one of their accomplishments. This is a special group of young men that have bought into what it takes to be champions, and I will go to battle with them everyday for the rest of their lives."
The runner-up Chargers crowned sophomore Ethan Vayro (175), who ran his record to 36-1 after dethroning Tyler Hayden, 7-2, in their title match.
Northern crowned top-ranked, four-time title-winning senior Drew Montgomery (144) and 19th-ranked junior Hayden Tyree (150), the latter improving on his fourth-place finish of a year ago with a 4-2 title match decision over Perez that raised his record on the year to 24-2.
Montgomery is in pursuit of his third straight Class 4A-3A state title after being a runner-up as a freshman, having improved his record on the year to 35-0 with a 95-second championship fall over Lackey senior Giovanni Posey.
Champions for North Point were third-ranked senior Austin Wood (120) and seventh-ranked senior Gabe Pauole (138), the latter being a repeat champion who was first at regions and fourth at states last year.
Wood is 37-1 following his 16-1 title match technical fall over Chopticon senior Aiden Arnold. Pauole improved his mark on the year to 38-0 with a fall in 3:21 of his title bout with Patuxent senior Mason Furl.
Great Mills had a pair of champions in 12th-ranked senior Gasper Romero (215) and 18th-ranked Tavon Barnes (285). Romero is 30-3 following his fall in 2:20 over McDonough junior Kaosisochu Ukiwe, who is 25-4.
Barnes improved his record on the year to 32-0 with a pin in 4:35 of his title match that dethroned sixth-ranked LaPlata senior Sima Saavedra, whose record is now 25-3.
Calvert crowned top-ranked sophomore Ethan Valdisera (113), who ran his record to 31-0 with a 20-4 technical fall over 14th-ranked senior and repeat runner-up Dylan Robey of North Point, who slipped to 35-3. Valdisera transferred from St. Mary's Ryken, where he was a Maryland Independent Schools State champion.
