Keissling Leads Team Maryland @ Kids Nationals

Six Marylanders reached the Freestyle Finals at Kids’ Nationals in Iowa on the last weekend of June. The Alliant Energy PowerHouse was the scene of Korbin Kiessling capturing his third consecutive USA Wrestling Triple Crown and fourth overall.

Tanner McCray-Bey and Alexander Fernandez joined Kiessling as Freestyle Gold Medalists. Three from the powerhouse 14U squad came up short in their title quests, Esais Perez, Justin Wildy, Jr., and Brody Clemons.

KIESSLING KILLS THE COMPETITION

Korbin Kiessling repped Rampage when he stepped on the 14U Freestyle mats at 92 pounds. In the finals, Kiessling was match up with the same foe he downed for the Greco Roman National Crown just a day before, Minnesota’s Gabriel Jasso.

Kiessling was up 1-0 after the first period and added a quick go behind for a second period takedown in what would be a 3-0 winning effort. Kiessling put up a 4-1 count over Jasso in Greco.

Kiessling also faced off with the same semifinal opponent as he did in Greco, Washington’s Tristan Guarnes. Kiessling kept him off the board with an 11-0 technical fall as time was expiring, 3:59, after pinning Guarnes in Greco, 1:14.

Illinois’ Luke Sponsel was given one of those 11-0 techs in just 52 seconds of the quarterfinals. A one-minute pin of Pennsylvania’s Brooks Beard got Kiessling’s title run started.

For those who don’t know, a Triple Crown is earned by winning titles at USA Wrestling’s Folkstyle Nationals, Freestyle Nationals, and Greco Roman Nationals. Kiessling secured the Folkstyle leg back in January.

MCCRAY-BEY BRINGS HOME 2 GOLDS

After earning the Greco National title, Rampage’s McCray-Bey got to work on the 12U 92-pound version and found the results to be to his liking as he cruised to the crown without being scored on as Kiessling did.

Also like Kiessling, McCray-Bey would see the same finals opponent as he did for Greco, Illinois’ Oz Bellamy. In the Freestyle meeting McCray-Bey dropped a 7-0 score on Bellamy after taking him out with an 8-0 tech in Greco.

Also mirroring Kiessling with a familiar semifinal pairing, McCray-Bey handled Sloan Sears (Illinois) with a 10-0 tech in 1:39. The Greco happening was also by tech, 9-0. McCray-Bey pitched an 8-0 shutout against another Illinois Boy in the quarters, David Leon, 8-0.

FERNANDEZ FINDS GOLD

After coming up with a Bronze Medal showing in Greco Roman, Fernandez, who competed for the Capital Wrestling Club, made significant strides in Freestyle going all the way up to the top spot.

Fernandez’s Golden Work came in the 10U Brackets at 93 pounds and the final bout ended in just 1:08 on a 12-2 tech fall of Zeek Buchan of Nebraska. Fernandez edged Iowa’s Kelby Franzen, 4-3, after decking Franzen in the Greco Roman quarters. The Freestyle quarters saw Fernandez deck Utah’s Zachary de Hoyos in 1:11.

PEREZ’S SILVER WAS CLOSE TO GOLD

Perez marched to the Greco Roman finals and couldn’t complete the title run and unfortunately had a duplicate experience in Freestyle as the Rampage Wrestler reached the 14U Freestyle Finals at 120 pounds but couldn’t solve North Carolina’s Ethan Halstead.

Theirs was an exciting match with Halstead taking a 4-0 lead on a takedown plus exposure points before Perez rallied back to tie it up, 4-4, with two takedowns later in the first period. Perez took the lead in the second on a go behind, but a big double leg lift led to exposure and four points to put Halstead back in the lead, 8-6. They traded takedowns down the stretch to end at the 10-8 final score.

Perez’s three earlier matches resulted in shutout technical falls of 10-0 in 42 seconds over Michigan’s Dominic Gorder, 11-0 in 2:47, versus Pennsylvania’s Parker Adkins, and 10-0 in 51 seconds against Iowa’s Cale Combs. Perez stuck Gorder in 28 seconds at the Freestyle National Duals.

WILDY, JR.’S SILVER RUN

After placing fourth in 14U Greco at 126 pounds, Wildy, Jr. advanced to the Freestyle Finals by beating Washington’s Mercer Hamilton, 9-5, in the semifinals. Hamilton had beaten Wildy, Jr. in the Greco Bronze Bout, 3-1. The Headhunter opened with consecutive 11-0 first period tech falls over Michelangelo Greco (Illinois), 1:11, and Carson Childers (Iowa), 33 seconds.

The finals match with Ohio’s Chase Randolph was over in 1:28 after Randolph put up a 12-1 tech of Wildy, Jr. The first points Randolph gained were off a high-risk roll attempt from Wildy, Jr. and it just snowballed from there.

CLEMONS SECURES SILVER

Clemons could not grab another gold for Rampage after being teched, 10-0, in 49 seconds of his 132-pound final versus Nash Denson of Oklahoma. This match was a shining example of the negative side of the Olympic Styles as Denson secured a takedown then locked up a roll and kept it going until he accrued the 10-0 count. It was over before Clemons could do anything about it.

Clemons avenged his Greco third-place match loss to North Carolina’s William Moorehead, 3-1, in the round of 16. Two more decisions were put up as Clemons moved through the bracket to the finals. In the quarters, it was 6-0 against Arizona’s Jaime Valencia. A 3-1 semifinal victory came over Utah’s Hunter Leavitt.

TSARNI FINISHES FOURTH

In the Greco competition, Zakey Tsarni reached the finals for the Capital Wrestling Club. In Freestyle, it would be a fourth-place finish at 135 pounds that granted Tsarni Double All-American status. Tsarni lost a close one, 3-2, to Oklahoma’s Denver Wolf in his placement match. A 12-0 tech in the consolation semis came against Wisconsin’s Eli Grotelveschen in 45 seconds.

Tsarni’s first match came in the quarterfinals, and he posted a 10-0 tech in 35 seconds versus Pennsylvania’s Kwale Jackson. California’s Jaguar Madyun won their semifinal meeting on a 12-1 tech in 2:22.

BRIGGS AND ETHAN ENCARNACION BREAKTHROUGH FOR FS HARDWARE

After failing to reach the Greco Roman Podium, Rampage’s Luke Briggs (96 pounds) and Headhunters’ Ethan Encarnacion (84) graced the Freestyle awards stand with finishes of third and seventh respectively.

Briggs was situated in a big bracket that saw him begin in the round of 32 with an 11-0 tech in 1:08. In the round of 16, Brigg was relegated to the consolation bracket after a one-point loss to Indiana’s Blake Walters, 9-8.

A pin and a tech fall delivered Briggs a shot at redemption in the blood round when he squared off with Michigan’s Dominik Keomany. Keomany beat Briggs, 2-1, at the FS National Duals but was on the receiving end of a 44 second pin here.

Briggs gained revenge for two Greco losses in his next two matches with Jayden Coleman (Florida) and Jed Spencer of Kansas. Briggs won his third-place match, 13-5, over Ohio’s Kolton Hartman.

Encarnacion’s seventh place match ended in 1:51 after he posted a 10-0 tech of Iowa’s Brody Peters. Other consolation round victims were Kansas’ Andrew Taussig, 6-1, and Iowa’s Hudson Ruge, 6-4.

Encarnacion teched Kyan Smith of Kansas in his opener then fell to the eventual runner-up, Pennsylvania’s Liam Reeves, 4-0, in the quarters.

STOPPED AT THE BLOOD ROUND

Three from the Maryland squad reached the blood round before bailing out of the tournament – Rampage’s Jack Koenig (12U 63 pounds), Edward Encarnacion (14U 96), and Miles Haynes (14U 120).
