Kids Nationals: Freestyle Edition

The Freestyle portion of the Kids’ Nationals in Cedar Rapids, Iowa took place on June 28th and 29th with Maryland putting 15 wrestlers on the podium, just two short of the 17 in Greco Roman. The Alliant Energy PowerHouse supplied the setting as three of our ranks reached the top of the podium - two in 14U, Korbin Kiessling (75 pounds) and Terriel Cooke (132), along with Subhan Ahmad in the 10U brackets at 93 pounds. All three won Greco Roman Championships as well.
For Rampage’s Kiessling, the Freestyle title completed his third USA Wrestling Triple Crown (winning Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco Championships in the same year). Kiessling accomplished the feat last year as a 12U grappler and for the first time in 2022 in the 10U competition. Kiessling was named USA Wrestling’s Athlete of the Week, following his escapades.
Kiessling faced the same rival in the Freestyle finals as he did in the Greco finals, Iowa’s Beckett Moyer (Moyer Elite Wrestling). Like the Greco match, Kiessling kept Moyer off the board with a shutout, 7-0. When the two met at the National Freestyle Duals, Kiessling won by technical fall, 12-2 (1:55).
“Not really (nervous), a little bit, but not really,” Korbin Kiessling said. “I was a little nervous, but I wrestled the kid (Moyer) two weeks before. (Having recently beat Moyer) gave me a little more confidence. It’s pretty good (to dominate that way). I’m happy. I’m proud. I feel like it’s (the Triple Crown) pretty cool. Not too many people have done that.”

Kiessling really wasn’t challenged during his voyage to the top as he teched or pinned his four foes prior to the finals. Interestingly, Kiessling faced the same semifinal opponent in both styles, Michigan’s Brooks Horwath (Team Donahoe Wrestling), and posted the same outcome, a tech fall, this one 11-0 in 1:26. The quarterfinals saw Kiessling dismantle Colorado’s Mason Betterman (Betterman Elite), 11-0 in just 1:15. That was preceded by a 35 second decking of Iowa’s Braxton Newell (The Best Wrestler). Kiessling opened against California’s Esquire Flores (SoCal Grappling Club) with a 12-1 tech in 2:55.
Korbin’s father and coach, Jason Kiessling, elaborated more on the nerves. At this point, much like Archbishop Spalding’s Taina Fernandez, the nerves are more about the expectations they face than the actual competition. Fernandez has not lost to a girl during her time in high school and Korbin is working on a two-and-a-half-year unbeaten streak.
“The morning of the finals of his freestyle match, I could tell there were a lot of nerves there,” remembered Jason Kiessling. “He can say what he wants but I know there were a lot of nerves there because we talked about it beforehand, and I don’t think it’s necessarily the match. I think it’s more or less the expectation of what people expect from him. He hasn’t lost a match in over two and a half years. That’s not from not going to tough competition, you know, he’s won Super 32 three times”
“I don’t think it’s necessarily the matches that make him nervous, I think it’s just everyone’s expectation of him and what they expect the outcomes to be. You know and if things don’t go his way, like, what’s that going to look like? I try to tell him to just keep things in perspective, just go out and wrestle your best, and when you do that the outcomes will take care of themselves. I think he does a pretty good job of managing that, being only 13 years old and having that kind of pressure put on him.”
Cooke’s gold medal run got more difficult as he progressed through the bracket. Cooke, also repping Rampage Wrestling, started off with three consecutive tech falls, two of them shutouts. The Round of 32 saw Virginia’s Asher Anthony (Richmond WC) fold under the pressure of a 12-1 count in 3:40. Illinois’ Jayden Mesmer (ISI WC) was blanked 13-0 (2:45) in the Round of 16. The quarters presented a rematch with Iowa’s Rylen Hanson (Immortal Athletics), who opposed Cooke in the Greco Roman finals, which resulted in a tech fall as did this Freestyle encounter, 11-0 (1:33).
Cooke’s semifinal match would provide him with his closest result, a 6-4 decision of Pennsylvania’s Arturo Reyes (Stellar Trained). Arturo would come back from that loss to take third. In the finals, Cooke slayed Wisconsin’s Alexander Knowles (Askren Wrestling Academy), 7-1. Cooke defeated Knowles, 7-4, in the National Freestyle Duals.
The HeadHunters’ Ahmad would see Illinois’ Alexander Cid (Toss Em Up) in his finals match and put forth a 10-0 tech fall in 1:13. Ahmad teched Cid in the Greco semis, 8-0.
“Yeah, it helped a lot watching his footwork,” Ahmad said when asked if seeing Cid previously helped. “I also checked out a few of his freestyle matches and saw him hitting fireman’s carries on everyone, so I made sure I was ready for it.”
Ahmad doubling up on titles has not made him complacent. The next step for him is to join Kiessling as a Triple Crown winner.
“I felt really good,” offered Ahmad. “I went out there and wrestled my best. I’m super happy because I put in a lot of hard work. The only bittersweet part is that I missed the Triple Crown this year since I got second at Folkstyle Nationals—but that just makes me want it even more next time. I would like to thank all my coaches and partners for helping me prepare for months for this big tournament.”
Much like his Greco run, Ahmad dominated the Freestyle slate with three techs and a pin. Ahmad flattened Nebraska’s Aaron Schuett (MWC WC) in 1:07 in the semifinals. Two 10-0 technical falls came in the quarters and Round of 16 over, California’s Lorenzo Perez (Spring Hills Wrestling), 41 seconds, and Iowa’s Knox Nolan (Big Game WC), 1:14.
“It felt awesome going out there and dominating all my opponents,” remarked Ahmad. “The best part was not letting anyone score on me — that made it even better! I came in ready, stayed aggressive, and finished all my matches early. It felt great to stay in control the whole time.”
Another HeadHunter, Ethan Encarnacion (78 pounds) came up just short, like literally…just short in his quest to double up on 12U gold as he fell to Tennessee’s Kalix Kilpatrick (Grindhouse Wrestling), 10-9, in the finals. Encarnacion defeated Kilpatrick 5-2 in the Greco Finals. Encarnacion handed third-place finisher, Liam Reeves (Steel Valley Renegades, PA), a 7-4 loss in the semis.
Encarnacion won his quarter-final and Round of 16 bouts on decisions as Michigan’s Landon Owens (Team Donahoe) fell 8-0 and Iowa’s Hudson Ruge (Sebolt Wrestling Academy) was handled with a 4-1 count. Encarnacion put up a 10-0 (1:07) tech of Oklahoma’s Kason Wolfe (Keystone Kids) in his first match.
Two 10U grapplers placed third as did one from the 8U Division. In 10U, Samuel Heath (49 pounds) added a Freestyle bronze to his Greco one after going 1-2 in a Round Robin affair. Gabriel Beltran was the second 10U wrestler to take third with a 14-4 tech of Oregon’s Leo Navarro (Legacy Elite WC) at 56 pounds. Gabriel Beltran, who was 3-2 in Freestyle, also teched Navarro in his Greco fifth place match.
Daniel Beltran joined Gabriel as a Freestyle bronze medalist at 49 pounds in the 8U slate after blanking Wisconsin’s Graham Werner (Askren WA), 11-0 (1:32). Daniel Beltran was 3-1, losing only to the Champion, Minnesota’s Theseus Yang-Elson (Summit WA), 10-0 (41 seconds). Yang-Elson also gave Daniel Beltran his sole Greco loss.
Three more 14U wrestlers made their way to the awards stand, with two HeadHunters achieving Double All-American status. In a strange twist, both placed one position lower in Freestyle than in Greco as Edward Encarnacion landed fourth at 88 pounds after finishing third in Greco and Justin Wildy, Jr. (115 pounds) taking fifth after being fourth in Greco.
Encarnacion lost to Indiana’s Hayden Cochran (Contender’s Wrestling Academy) in the consolation finals, 9-7. Encarnacion beat Cochran in the consolation rounds of the Greco competition, 10-2. Wildy, Jr. pinned an Indiana’s Gavin Meranda (Warrior Reginal TC), 2:18, in his Freestyle placement match. In the quarters, Wildy, Jr. avenged a Greco loss to Missouri’s Dominick Turner (STL Warriors) by sticking his rival in 3:44.
The other placewinner was also a HeadHunter, Lincoln Smiddy, and he placed eighth at 155 pounds after being pinned by California’s Jonathan Zamora (Dethrone WC), 1:57. Smiddy went 3-3. Alvin Pinkney was 3-2 and dropped his blood round match at 126 pounds to keep him from joining his HeadHunter teammates as Double All-Americans. Another wrestler hoping to double up, Rampage’s Kyle Link (92 pounds) came up short as well, falling in the blood round and finishing with a 2-2 record.
The 12U group had two others earn hardware and two more lose in the blood round. Rampage’s Tanner McCray-Bey placed seventh at 78 pounds, posting a 10-2 decision of Iowa’s Ruge in his placement bout. McCray-Bey’s second loss came to the grappler who kept Ethan Encarnacion out of the top spot, Tennessee’s Kilpatrick, 15-5. Brian Flynn (Southern Maryland WC WolfPack) came in eighth at 98 pounds with a 3-3 tally. The blood round losers were Matthew Oh, who went 3-2 at 70 pounds, and Ace Hamilton at 108 pounds with a 1-2 record.
A Southern Maryland WC WolfPack grappler, Alexander Fernandez, placed sixth at 84 pounds in the 10U Division. Fernandez lost the placement match and quarterfinal to the same kid, Kansas’ Beau Blevins (Wichita TC), by fall in 35 seconds and 10-0 in the quarters. Fernandez was seventh in Greco.
Elijah Jean Paul (HeadHunters) added a fifth place 10U Freestyle award to his fourth-place finish in Greco. Jean Paul teched Justin-Carter Jones (Toss Em Up, IL), 13-2, in the fifth-place match. Greco Roman runner-up Calvin Thompson (HeadHunters) made it to the blood round before he was eliminated in Freestyle at 71 pounds with a 1-2 record.
The final 8U Freestyle placer for Maryland, Sultan Ahmad, stuck Missouri’s Cameron Chartier (Webb City Youth Wrestling) in 55 seconds to secure seventh place and his second All-American status of the trip. Ahmad also decked Chartier in his fifth place Greco bout in 10 seconds. Sebastian Valle (The Fort Hammers, IN) handed Ahmad tech fall losses in both disciplines and placed fourth in both.
