South River hosted two dual meets in the back half of January, both came down to the wire, with Old Mill edging the Seahawks on the 18th, 37-36, and the home squad picking up a 36-30 win over county rival Chesapeake on Friday the 26th.
Old Mill edges South River on criteria
When Brody Glenn stepped on the mat at 132lbs, his South River squad was trailing the Patriots, 12-11, after the two teams split the first four matches. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, Old Mill added to that lead with a third period pin by Dekhi Church.
At 138, Pete Laye got the home team back in it as he pinned Montrell Johnson, 1:53.
Xavier Foran needed most of the match to put away Josiah Mullin, 5:27, to put six more on the board for South River at 144 and give them a 23-18 lead.
Ben Ford added three points to the Seahawks score with an 11-5 decision at 150 over Ruben Salas for a 26-18 advantage.
Ethan McWaters gave South River its fourth win in a row at 157 with a first period fall of John Asvestas, 1:23, to push South River farther ahead, 32-18.
Evan Paximadas was searching for answers from his coaches on how to handle Old Mill’s Dominick Hurley, who handed him a 7-3 loss at 165.
Noel Norman kept the tide turning for the Patriots at 175, putting a quick end to Max Alvarez’s night with a 60 second fall to pull within five, 32-27.
Aidan Healey put South River’s final points in the book with a 10-2 major decision over Deven Perry at 190, leaving the score at 36-27.
After Old Mill’s Xavien Mackell pinned Nate Zollinger at 215 in 28 seconds to draw within three, 36-33, the Patriots had to feel good about tying the match up, or even outright winning it with bonus points as they had 4A/3A state champion RJ Duncan, who is ranked No. 3 by Legacy Wrestling at 285, facing off with No. 18 Busayo Balogun, who is seen here contemplating his next move en route to a 3-1 loss. With the score 36-36, Old Mill would be declared the winner on a criteria unknown to Legacy Wrestling.

South River bounces back versus Chesapeake
After suffering a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of a team they previously beat at La Plata’s Warrior Duals in December, the Seahawks geared up for another Anne Arundel County showdown with Chesapeake on Friday the 26th.
The home team jumped out to a 10-0 lead after Jackson Peeples pinned Mason Szczeszek, 3:49, at 106, and Andrew Veilluex added an 8-0 major decision at 113 over Nolan Behler. Two state ranked competitors squared off at 120lbs as the Seahawks Trent Shipley (No. 20 at 113) bumped up to see No. 21 Brayden Roberts. Roberts got the best of Shipley, 12-6, to get the Cougars off the schneid.
Michael Greenstreet’s first period pin, 1:51, at 126 against Nicco Seppi cut into South River’s lead. With a 10-9 edge, Ethan Burger used a 9-3 decision of Jackson Worley at 132, to increase that gap to 13-9.
Chesapeake’s Owen Collins decked Pete Laye in overtime, 6:45, at 138 to give the Cougars their first lead of the match 15-13. Ben Ford put the Seahawks back in the lead, 16-15, when he won a 12-9 decision against Ethan Mills at 144.
Xavier Foran (150) sat in the middle of a three-match winning streak for the Seahawks and dropped a 55 second pin on Kyle Richardson.
Ethan McWaters pocketed that third win for South River by major decision in the 157lb match with Isaac Santos, to grow the Seahawk lead to eleven, 26-15.
Chesapeake’s Matthew Curtin won an 8-4 match with Evan Paximadas at 165 and Keanu Furbush received a forfeit at 175 to make things interesting heading into the final three bouts.
With the score sitting at 26-24, Aidan Healey went to work and added four more points to South River’s score for a 30-24 advantage after his 13-0 blanking of Gavin Lewis at 190.
The Cougars were not going to fold, though, and Xander Dodd showed that at 215lbs with his 3:00 fall over Nate Zollinger to tie the dual up at 30 all. Busayo Balogun’s pin at 285 over Jonas Dotson, 1:31, made him and the crowd joyous as it propelled the Seahawks to the 36-30 victory.
