Legacy Wrestling Launches Maryland's First Freestyle & Greco-Roman Rankings

Legacy Wrestling has been the home of folkstyle coverage in the Old-Line State — tracking the rankings, results, and rising stars that make Maryland one of the most competitive wrestling states on the East Coast. Today, we're expanding that mission.

We are proud to announce the launch of Legacy Freestyle and Greco-Roman Rankings — the first Maryland-focused rankings produced for Olympic-style wrestling at the 16U and 19U levels.

Why Now?

The timing has never been better. Maryland's freestyle and greco-roman scene has been quietly building for years. Clubs like Rampage, Headhunters, Capital Wrestling Club, Warhawks, the Outsiders, Mavericks Wrestling, TRC Cadets, Eagle RTC, The Compound, and more are putting in serious mat time in the off-season — and these athletes deserve to be recognized for it.

We've been watching. And what we've seen has convinced us: Maryland has the talent. It's time to start tracking it.

What We're Covering

Our inaugural rankings cover boys Freestyle, boys Greco-Roman, and girls Freestyle at the 16U and 19U levels.

The 1st Edition rankings include 62 ranked wrestlers across 26 total weight classes, representing more than a dozen clubs from all across Maryland. Some weight classes have been combined where field sizes warrant it. As the numbers grow, we expect to expand.

A Quick Look at the Landscape:

• Boys Freestyle features 10 ranked weight groupings from 94 pounds all the way up to 215/285, with 27 wrestlers earning spots in the initial rankings.

• Boys Greco-Roman spans 10 weight classes as well, with 23 ranked wrestlers — a reminder that not everyone who competes freestyle also competes greco, and respect is due to those who do both!

• Girls Freestyle covers 6 weight classes from 105/115 pounds through 170 pounds, with 12 ranked athletes.

IMPORTANT - Maryland Events Only — For Now

We want to be upfront about our approach. These rankings are based exclusively on Maryland events — at least to start.

We know Pennsylvania has incredible tournaments. We also know there are amazing regional (NY/NJ) and national events (the Open, Spokane) where Maryland wrestlers travel and compete and earn hardware. We also know we have world, national, and Pan Am champions that are not yet on this list. To be fair, we wanted to start with the simple rule that we were only covering events in the state. Once the megastars, and soon to be megastars, compete and win locally then they’ll be on the list.

We would love to cover all of it. But realistically, we can't monitor the entire country searching for Maryland kids the way we can cover what's happening right here at home.

Additionally, as our freestyle and greco coverage grows — the way our folkstyle coverage has grown over the years — we hope to expand our tracking to include more events, more states, and eventually regional and national competitions. This is Day One. There will be a Day Two.

The Road Ahead: Three Tournaments, One Championship

MSWA Tournament — Spalding

Our first update comes after the MSWA tournament at Spalding. This is where mid-season statements get made, and we'll be tracking every result and updating the rankings accordingly.

MSWA Tournament -- Queen Annes

Rankings update number two comes after Queen Annes — another key event on the Maryland Freestyle and Greco calendar that will shake things up and give athletes another chance to prove where they belong.

Maryland State Championships — and the Ironmen & Ironwomen

The Maryland State Championships will produce our third and final regular update of the season. But it will also produce something else — something special.

After States, Legacy Wrestling will publish our inaugural Ironmen and Ironwomen Rankings: a special designation for those wrestlers who have earned a ranking in Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Competing in multiple styles is hard. It demands a different kind of commitment and a more complete understanding of the sport. We think those athletes deserve special recognition — and starting this year, they'll get it.

Welcome to spring wrestling, Legacy style.
