While a few Marylanders were out West in Vegas putting it on the line on the national scene, a collection of Maryland Girls gathered at Northeast High School in Anne Arundel County last weekend for the MSWA’s Maryland Women’s National Team Trials to earn the chance to test their chops on the national stage.
The 19U and 16U age groups were combined for one bracket per weight. Unless otherwise noted, the weight classes were run in a round robin format, in those instances we will refer to the second-place finisher and not go much further unless the competition merits it.
Two nationally ranked girls who’ve had success outside of Maryland won their respective weight classes, both are No. 1 in Maryland, Laurel’s Alexandra Ford is ranked 18th in the country at 140-pounds by USA Wrestling and Archbishop Spalding’s Summer Mutschler comes in at No. 26 at 105-pounds in those national ratings.
Ford beat four state placers to win the 145-pound bracket. Quince Orchard’s state runner-up, Aubry Spadoni (No. 4 at 135) finished second, losing to Ford by technical fall, 10-0. Third-place finisher, Havre de Grace’s Kayle Ward (4th at 140), who placed fourth behind Ford at states, fell to Ford, 11-0. Fifth-place state finisher, Manchester Valley’s No. 5 Addie Grubb, placed fourth, losing to Ford, 11-0.
Mutschler won her 110-pound crown with one of the wins being a 10-0 tech of Brunswick’s Catherine Orndorff (No. 3 at 105), who won a silver at the state tournament.
Orndorff’s state champion teammate, No. 1 Katherine Virgilio claimed the 120lb crown in a best of three dance with fellow Frederick County grappler, No. 4 Annika Emshoff (Frederick), who placed fourth at states. Emshoff decked Virgilio in the first bout, 4:08. Virgilio won by tech in the next one, 14-2, before returning the favor and pinning Emshoff in slightly quicker fashion, 4:02, in the rubber match.
Walkersville’s Alexis Nicholas, who was third in the state at 120 pounds and ranked third there, was also involved in a three-match set with Stephen Decatur’s Irie Carmack (No. 8 at 120) to decide the 125-pound champ. Nicholas kept the drama at bay winning with consecutive tech falls, 11-0 and 10-0.
Stephen Decatur did have two finish atop their weights, No. 11 Calleigh McBride (100) and No. 1 Azariyah Johnson (190). Interestingly, they both won their titles uncontested by receiving byes. Johnson was second at states a year after being a champion.
For the second time in recent action, Eastern Tech’s No. 2 Morgan Linton got the best of her state finals opponent, No. 1 Chaniah Bernier (Stephen Decatur), pinning Bernier in 1:01, to take the top spot at 170-pounds. Linton also pinned Bernier in the MAWA South Region finals.
No. 2 at 110-pounds and state silver medalist, Ariana Carnahan, claimed the 115-pound gold here for the Mavericks while repping the Outsiders, with two straight 10-0 techs of May Brownstein (Diamond Fish Girls Wrestling).
State Champion No. 1 Reagan Ramadan used two straight falls at 155-pounds to down No. 3 Amirah Abegesah (Quince Orchard), 2:26 and :46. Abegesah was also pinned by Ramadan in the state semis, 5:52 and finished third.
Eleanor Roosevelt’s Jennifer Djobo, who placed third at states, claimed first at 140-pounds in a battle of two girls ranked at 130, No. 3 Djobo and No. 12 Gema Serio (Northeast-AA) by sticking Serio at the 1:24 mark.
Westminster’s Caroline McCann fell to Djobo in the consolation finals at states and is ranked fourth at 130. McCann gained the 130-pound title here on a bye and teched Bel Air’s Grace Reilly (No. 8 at 135), 12-2, to take the gold at 139-pounds. Reilly placed sixth at states.
Severn Run’s No. 11 Katrina Adhikari won one of those free titles at 235-pounds as the only participant. At 105-pounds, Walt Whitman’s Kelani Ramos beat McBride, 10-0, and second place finisher, Jahzara Smith (Broadneck), 10-0.
There was also a K-8 Division. Those results can be found after the 19U/16U section.
