Over the Labor Day Weekend a number of Marylanders got a leg up on the 2025-2026 wrestling season by competing at the Tyrant Nationals Duals and Open in Oaks, Pennsylvania at The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center and Fairgrounds.
Maryland Mallets place fourth in the Dual Portion
There were only eight teams in the dual competition with Maryland Mallets coming in fourth overall, dropping their placement match to Bearcats of Pennsylvania, 51-28. Mallets fell in the semifinals to another Pennsylvania squad, Parabellum WA White, 51-21. Team Darkhorse of New Jersey won the crown with a 45-28 win over Parabellum WA White.
The Mallets went 2-1 in Pool B to qualify for the Championship Bracket. They won their first two matches before being upended by Team Darkhorse, 66-12. In the opener, Mallets discarded Parabellum WA Black, 52-19, and Florida’s Fighting Irish, 45-25.
Posting 5-0 records for the Mallets were Pennsylvanians, Justin Swope (150 pounds) and Connor Gillahan (190). Lansdowne’s Chase Swiger was 4-1 at 175 pounds. Finishing 3-2 were Guilford Park’s Leo Saravia (132 pounds) and Bobby Savino, another PA grappler, at 165.
The following were 2-3 – Jaisen Sharma (98 pounds), Glen Burnie’s Daniel Canas (113), Good Counsel’s James Pettiford (144 pounds), and Colton Vitale (PA, 157). Throughout the duals, Gabriel Garner (106 pounds), Long Reach’s Dominic Esposito (120), La Plata’s Deegan Womer (138 pounds), and Sam Parkhurst (Good Counsel, 215) added one win each.
Rhys Feguson wins gold; Scottie Ford finishes second in the Open Tournament
The Open was run in a bracketed fashion if there were enough combatants, if not a Round Robin format was utilized.
Walkersville’s Rhys Ferguson captured top honors at 144 pounds by decking Riffat Pathan Pathan (Palm Academy) in 3:48 of their finals match. Ferguson pinned all three of his foes with a semifinal flattening of Boyertown’s Liam Diamond coming in 1:56. Ferguson dropped fellow Marylander, James Pettiford, 43 seconds into their quarterfinal bout. Pettiford did not place.
Kent County’s Scottie Ford came up short in his 165-pound final with Virginia’s Rocco Zagorites (Scanlan Wrestling Academy), 8-1. To reach the final, Ford came out ahead of Sebastian Laterra (DC Trained), 8-4. Henlopen Hammers’ Turhan Potter was stuck at the 1:19 mark of the quarters.
Bronze Medals were awarded to two Maryland Grapplers, Max Birth (Walkersville) and Adam Keever (Hereford). Birth, who repped Frederick County Mat Club avenged a quarterfinal loss to Curtis Cooper (Grit Mat Club) to gain his 190-pound bronze. Birth stuck Cooper in 3:28 during their placement match after meeting the same fate in 2:52 in their initial encounter.
Keever (The Zone WC) won the 215-pound consolation final over Salem Awad (Scanlan Wrestling Academy) by tiebreaker, 2-1. In the consolation semifinals, Keever surprised Private School State Champ, Evan Gavin (St. Mary’s Ryken), 11-9. Keever’s loss came to the champ, Rudy Wagner of Virginia, 5-3, in the semis.
Gavin won his next match by technical fall, 16-1, over Chase Lewis (Lake Forest Spartans) to land in fifth place. Two others placed fifth, Georgetown Prep’s Kenson Noel (144 pounds) and Stephen Decatur’s Alex Riehl (165 pounds). Daniel Casey III, wrestling for Hereford, placed sixth at 126 pounds.
London Smith Claims Gold in the Girls’ Division
Eastern Tech’s London Smith, donning the Outsiders singlet, was in a Round Robin affair at 145 pounds where she handled fellow Marylander, second-place finisher, Addie Grubb (Manchester Valley), 7-0, and pinned Jasmine Capodanno (Strive), 1:35. Grubb won by technical superiority, 10-0, versus Capodanno. The Girls’ wrestled Freestyle, while the Boys did Folkstyle.
Bronze Medals were claimed by two Maryland Girls, Manchester Valley’s Brynn Ryan (120-126 pounds) and Atholton’s Naima Harvey Brown (152-165 pounds).
Ryan was in a traditional bracket where she won by tech, 14-4, in her placement bout against Sophia Holmes (All I See Is Gold). Ryan dropped her semifinal match to the champion, also from All I See Is Gold, Cami Bird, 12-1.
Harvey Brown was involved in a Round Robin situation with three others and went 1-2 to land in third. Harvey Brown beat Zahily Avery (Orchard South WC), 12-4. Her losses came to Kimberly Munoz (Unattached), 11-0, and Maddison Miller (Lady Assains)(possibly supposed to be Assassins?), 10-0.
