MAWA Eastern Nationals (Boys Edition!)

The MAWA Eastern Nationals were held on May 2nd through the 4th at the Wicomico Civic Center in Salisbury, Maryland. We will spotlight the girls in a separate article, this one is for the boys in the High School age groups, Advanced and Elite. Advanced is for the younger grapplers, while Elite contains those in the upper levels of high school.

Maryland posted four champions across the two divisions, with three in the Elite Ranks: Brunswick’s Seth Crawford (145), Seneca Valley’s Isaiah Brewster (118), and Perry Hall’s Victor Marks-Jenkins (189).

Of those three, Crawford put forth the most impressive performance as the 2A/1A state runner-up avenged losses to 4A/3A state champ Isisah Womack (Richard Montgomery) and two-time private school state placer for Loyola-Blakefield Josh Hale. In the finals, Crawford lit Womack up for a 17-3 major-decision and edged Hale, 2-0, in the semis. A pin and a 9-4 win over Collin Monell (NY) in the quarters were Crawford’s early results. Hale placed third with a 7-4 win over Ryan Brown (New Jersey).

Womack beat Crawford, 6-3 in overtime, to take gold at the South Region Qualifier at Northeast-AA in March. At the South Regional in April, Hale beat Crawford in the semis, 4-3, with Womack taking first, beating Hale, 4-0, in the finals. So, the expectation was another crown for Womack, but as the cliché goes, “That’s why we wrestle the matches”.

Brewster’s title came after a scoreless regulation with New Jersey’s Jacob Cinquegrana, who did not get past the New Jersey Districts, when 24 seconds into the first overtime period, the 4A/3A state silver medalist hit a double leg takedown to secure the winning points, 3-0.

Marks-Jenkins, who is ranked 28th in the nation by High School on SI, was awarded his second consecutive MAWA Championship by forfeit from Pennsylvania’s Gabrel Caufield. Two tech-falls came before that for the two-time 4A/3A state champion, including 16-1 over Hammond’s Jaden Asaah-Timothy.

Frederick’s 4A/3A state bronze medalist, Victor Guerra was Maryland’s sole champ in the Advanced Brackets using a 12-4 major decision of New Jersey’s Tylee King for the 160-pound crown. King placed fifth in his region and did not qualify for New Jersey’s single class states. Guerra beat the third-place finisher, Pennsylvania’s Lucas Judd, 6-0, in the quarterfinals, and fourth-place finisher, Tyler Shane (NJ), 3-1, in the semis.

Eight total Marylanders landed in the second position of the podium, five in the Elite and three from the Advanced classification. Elite runners-up were Womack, Mason Day (Cumberland, 125), Parkside’s Colby Jones (130), Eleanor Roosevelt’s Leo Foreman (152), and Bohemia Manor’s Josh Allen (171).

Day lost to a wrestler who did not place in his district during the state series, Pennsylvania’s Brooks Matthews, 20-2. Jones fell to a Pennsylvania grappler as well, Nathaniel Handy, who was eighth in his region and did not qualify for states, by fall, 2:38. One of Jones’ wins came over Manchester Valley’s Ryan Hydorn, by technical fall, 15-0.

Foreman, who placed third in the 4A/3A state, beat Linganore’s Cash Wheat, 13-7, in the semifinals. Foreman teched Wheat, 17-2, at the state tournament. Wheat did not place at states but landed in the fifth spot here. Foreman’s finals foe was also from the Keystone State, Simon Zamudio, who did not place at regions. Zamudio won a close one 4-3. Allen was decked in his final bout with yet another Pennsylvanian, Rowan McClain-Hartman, 3:06, who placed second at districts.

Advanced Silver Medalists were Loyola’s Brendan Tobin (130), Northern Calvert’s Logan Boyle (135), and Poolesville’s Zoya Wexler (171).

Tobin was the only one to face a grappler from Pennsylvania, being put away with a quick pin 34 seconds into the bout with Jarrod Blunt. In a bizarre turn, Tobin hit a Blast Double with such force that he picked Blunt up off the mat, but upon returning to the mat, Blunt hit a nifty, perfectly timed underhook and turned Tobin to his back for the fall.

Boyle came up short with New Jersey’s Michael Frank, who was up 4-1 late in the match when Boyle tried a throw to no avail to make the final, 7-1. Wexler lost to Delaware’s Justin Ryland, 18-6. After keeping the match close through two periods, Wexler’s day snowballed out of control in the final frame. Wexler blanked Northern Calvert’s Jacob Gough, 14-0, in his first match.

Other Elite wrestlers coming home with hardware were Glenelg’s Isaac Choi (3rd at 140), placing fifth were Joey Day (Cumberland, 111), Quince Orchard’s Harrison Spadoni (125), and Glen Burnie’s Noah Obinna (152). Kent County’s Scottie Ford was fifth at 160 pounds. Spadoni did not place at the 4A/3A states this year but the senior earned state honors in his three previous campaigns. Ford was fourth in the 2A/1A state brackets.

Asaah-Timothy placed sixth at 189 as did New Town’s Olasubomi Atanlagun at 220 pounds. Ending in seventh place were Blake Harris (135, Northeast-AA), Chris Millard (189, South River), and Lanham’s Patrick Flynn, who beat North Harford’s Holden Young, 1-0, in their placement match. Chopticon’s Aiden Arnold came in eighth at 130.

Atanlagun placed fourth at the 2A/1A state tournament and beat Young, 3-1, in the consolation semifinals there. Young placed fifth at states. Millard was sixth at 190 in the 4A/3A division. Arnold did not place this year but is a previous state placer.

Additional Advanced grapplers earning spots on the award stand were South Hagerstown’s Logan Ardinger (3rd at 100). Fourth place finishers were Long Reach’s Dominic Esposito (120), Middletown’s Ryker Keeney (130), and Catoctin’s Ashton Thompson (140). Parkside’s Canaan Cornish placed sixth at 130 pounds.

Of those, only Thompson (6th) and Wexler (4th) placed in the state tournament. With both doing so on the 2A/1A side of things.
