The Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association’s spring series culminated this weekend at the Wicomico Civic Center in Salisbury with the Eastern Nationals. In the High School age divisions (Advanced and Elite), Marylanders secured seven gold medals, with four coming in the Advanced slate.
Headlining the Advanced grapplers was Perry Hall’s state champion Victor Marks-Jenkins, who secured the 160lb title with a 9-3 victory over Virginia’s William Brooks (Stone Bridge). Brooks was fourth in the Class 5 state tournament. Marks-Jenkins was challenged in his semifinal match with Hayden Harvey (Montoursville, PA), winning 1-0. Harvey was fifth in his AA region and did not qualify for the state tournament.
Bowie’s state champ, Jamil Morrow, secured a gold at 220 in the Elite brackets with a 3-0 win over Robert Anderson (Hazleton Area, PA). Anderson was fifth in his region.
Two state runners-up climbed to the top of the podium here, Eleanor Roosevelt’s Austin Hayes (Advanced 100) and Bullis’ Sepanta Ahanj-Elias (Elite 171). Hayes pinned Sykesville’s Jake Simione in 1:24. Ahanj-Elias won a 5-3 decision over Chase Amspacher (Spring Grove, PA). Amspacher did not place in his region tournament.
Calvert Hall’s multi-time state placer and former National Prep All-American, Griffin Stewart, claimed the 145lb Elite wall chart by edging Kamden Everly (Mifflin County, PA), 3-2. Everly was sixth in his region.
The last two champions did their work in the Advanced brackets. Loyola’s Josh Hale (140) beat Pennsylvania’s Cole Trzeciak (LaSalle), 7-4. Trzeciak did not place in his regional tournament. Walkersville’s Rhys Ferguson (145) blanked Matthew McCann (Bound Brook, NJ), 4-0. McCann did not reach the podium at his regional in New Jersey.
Huntingtown’s Owen Hayden was second in the Advanced Division at 105lbs after falling to Paulsboro, NJ’s William Cruz, 12-0, in the finals. Cruz was fourth at his District Tournament. Maryland had one more silver medalist in the Elite Division in St. Frances Academy’s Maurice Womack, who fell 6-3 to Simon Zamudio (Hazleton Area, PA). Zamudio failed to place in his state’s region during the season.
Maurice was joined on the awards stand by his brother Isisah, who placed fourth at 130lbs in the Elite section. Isisah lost to Boonsboro’s state champ and NHSCA All-American, Tanner Halling, 6-3, in the consolation finals.
Two other Elite wrestlers earned bronze, James M Bennett’s Braxton McAvey (152) and Middletown’s Kashton Dalhouse (189). McAvey pinned his foe, Micah Atherton (Mount Union, PA), 2:50, in his third-place match. Dalhouse squeezed past New York’s Hunter Lavigne (Horseheads), 6-5.
Bronze medals were secured in the Advanced gauntlet by Quin Greenstreet (105), Scottie Ford (Kent County, 145), George Tate (Good Counsel, 189), and Bel Air’s Owen Reilly (285). Greenstreet and Tate had close battles with their rivals with Greenstreet winning 3-2 against Gabe Campbell (Chaddsford, PA) and Tate using a 4-2 margin versus Vicktor Lebron (Norristown, PA).
Ford won 11-5 over Justin McGarrigle (Wernersville, PA) and Reilly decked his Pennsylvania opponent, Lucas Risser (Coudersport), 2:00.
Three Marylanders placed fourth, one in Advanced – Brunswick’s Seth Crawford (130). The two Elite placers were Loyola’s Jayden Jackson (125) and St. Frances Academy’s Chase Carpintieri (160).
In the Elite 160lb bracket, Maryland put three more wrestlers on the podium with C. Milton Wright’s Devin Sweeney placing fifth and the seventh-place match being a battle of Poolesville’s Shimma Wexler and Middletown’s Henry Graham, that saw Wexler win in easy fashion, 16-3.
Other Maryland placers in the Elite ranks were Bethesda Chevy Chase’s Ethan Makle (5th at 118), and two North Harford grapplers placing sixth – Tommy Blankenship (130) and Clay Lawrence (285).
Landing in the seventh position of the pecking order were Parkside’s Colby Jones (125), North Harford’s Holden Young (189), and Parkville’s Braeden Poorbaugh, who beat Poolesville’s Andrew Fraser in the 220lb placement match.
Back to the Advanced wrestlers and the rest of the Marylanders who brought home hardware. Finishing sixth were Carter Mullen (Brunswick, 93), Ashton Thompson (Catoctin, 125) and Bethesda’s Braxton Bohinc (135).
Two placed eighth, Zoya Wexler (Charles E Smith Jewish Day School, 160) and Frederick’s Sam Ojl II.
