MAWA Results: South Region (Girls)

At the MAWA South Region Tournament at the Wicomico Civic Center last weekend, two Eastern Tech girls got revenge for losses in the state finals as Ariana Carnahan (118) and Morgan Linton (175) claimed gold medals.

Carnahan (No. 2 at 110) defeated two top ranked girls on the way to her title including her nemesis, Havre de Grace’s Madison Birth, who beat Carnahan 10-6 in the state finals. Birth also pinned Carnahan at last year’s states. Carnahan did pin Birth at last season’s Falcon Invitational and found a way to edge her rival one more time, 10-3, in the finals. Carnahan downed No. 1 at 115 Katharine Virgilio (Brunswick), 11-3, as she moved along brackets.

Linton (No. 2 at 170) stuck a girl she had never beaten, No. 1 Chaniah Bernier (Stephen Decatur), at the 5:08 mark. Bernier beat Linton, 7-2, at states a year ago and then pinned Linton in this year’s final, 2:39. Linton easily handled two other state ranked girls, Randallstown’s Daegan Bishop (No. 10 at 155), 14-0, and Patuxent’s Sophie Cobb (No. 15 at 170), 15-0. Bishop defeated Cobb, 15-3, in the bronze bout.

The 110lb bracket was littered with a few girls who were at 105lbs during the season, including the champion, Gwynn Park’s No. 4 Jada Agurs, who pinned New Jersey’s Emma Cain in the finals, 1:18. Agurs decked No. 2 Wura Idowu of Randallstown 38 seconds into their meeting and also disposed of Dundalk’s Emily Cabo (No. 11 at 115), by fall, 2:55.

Idowu flattened Cabo in 2:48 to take third and discarded No. 3 Catherine Orndorff (Brunswick), 7-6. Cabo handled Kenwood’s No. 7 Brooke Jones, by fall, 3:42, in the consolation rounds. Jones decked Orndorff in the fifth-place match, 2:01.

Havre de Grace did gain one titlist when Kayla Ward (No. 4 at 140) pinned Rising Sun’s Anna Farr (No. 3 at 145) in the 148lb final. Farr beat Tuscarora’s Kristina Dorsey (No. 7 at 145), 8-3. Dorsey would end up placing fifth.

Eleanor Roosevelt’s Jennifer Djobo (No. 3 at 130) used a pin of Patapsco’s Gianna Guarnera (No. 12 at 135) to secure the 140lb gold in 1:22. Guarnera won by fall over Meade’s No. 6 Viviana Abalama, 2:14, to drop Abalama to the consolation rounds where she placed fourth.

Marriotts Ridge’s Violet Land is top-rated in Maryland at 100lbs and finished second here at 103 after getting pinned by Delaware’s Lily Moffett, 2:00. Land teched Herefords No. 6 Julia Abel, 17-1. Abel bounced back to take third on a 36 second pin of New Jersey’s Melanie Ushler.

Two more Maryland girls placed third, Nevaeh Diaz (Meade, 132) and Quince Orchard’s Esther Hernandez (148). Diaz decked Delaware’s Ellie St. Jean in 2:03. Hernandez, who is ranked third at 140, also won by fall, 2:15, over New Jersey’s Key’ari Jones. Hernandez pinned Dorsey in the consolation bracket, with a 9-1 edge, 3:50. Dorsey pinned Hernandez in the opening round, 3:38, while winning 12-4.

Oakdale’s Madelyn Hartman, who is rated fourth at 115lbs, took fourth at 118lbs. Hartman was pinned by Birth, 2:53, in the semis to drop out of title contention. Hartman handled Virgilio, 8-6, in the consolation semis. Virgilio would take fifth.

All of these girls competed in the Elite Division and like the boys, the top four move on to May’s Eastern Nationals back at the Wicomico Civi Center.
