MSJ Wins Demolition Duals

Mount St. Joseph’s sophomore Brooklyn Pickett went 7-0 as a 157-pounder at the Dec. 29-30 Demolition Duals hosted by his third-ranked Gaels, including an 8-3 decision over top-ranked senior Beau Schmidt of Northeast-Anne Arundel County.

Top-ranked at 150 pounds by Legacy Wrestling, Pickett not only rose in weight to face Schmidt, but he also earned a 68-second fall, a 12-1 major decision and out-gunned four other opponents over the course of as many technical falls by the combined score of 68-6.

“I bumped up for the team and also to face Beau Schmidt and to challenge myself against bigger opponents. In all my matches, the goal is not just to win, but to score bonus points,” said Pickett, a returning Maryland Independent/Private Schools state champion who is ranked 18th nationally by High School On SI.

“The weight, for now, will depend on what the team needs and my health and my growth. My goal in every match is to go out there and get the bonus and to score the most amount of points possible, and a guy like Beau Schmidt is a good, tough competitor.”

Pickett and six teammates went undefeated with two others losing just once for the Gaels, who defeated eighth-ranked Chesapeake-Anne Arundel, 53-14, in the semifinals, and runner-up William Penn, 44-27, in the finals.

Pickett’s effort follows last year’s Outstanding Wrestler performance at the event, which included a 6-1 decision over then top-ranked senior Evan Boblits of St. Mary’s Ryken.

Pickett rose up from 144 to 150 pounds to face Boblits, a four-time Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title-winner who earned two private schools state crowns in three championship appearances and placed fourth, fifth and third in the National Preps Tournament.

Pickett’s performance also followed last month’s sixth place finish in the Beast of the East Tournament at the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware, where he used a cradle in the quarterfinals to deck No. 8 Sonny Amato of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional. Amato was a state champion as a freshman and third a year ago.

“At Beast Of The East, the big win over Amato meant a lot, not just to me personally, but to the entire school. It meant a lot for me to get our Mount St. Joseph’s name into national contention talks again,” said Pickett of Amato, who was ranked third nationally when they met.

“I can only look to improve and to learn from the experience, because at the end of the day, the quarterfinals win is only one win. What I do from here on out will not only show the true type of wrestler I am, but also, the type of program MSJ has.”

Pickett faced no slouch in Schmidt, a top-ranked 157-pound winner of three Anne Arundel County titles and one regional crown in three title match appearances who has placed second twice and fifth once at public school states.

All of Schmidt’s career setbacks have been against state placewinners, starting with a 132-pound Class 2A-1A state championship loss as a freshman by 5-2 to Stephen Decatur senior Logan Intrieri.

Schmidt was defeated by four state champions as a sophomore, including a 3-2 decision to Centennial's Calvin Kraisser who graduated last year as a four-time public schools state champion.

As a 10th-grader, Schmidt also fell, 4-2, to South Carroll’s Jo Jo Gigliotti, who is currently a top-ranked 138-pound senior in pursuit of his fourth Class 2A-1A state title.

As a junior Schmidt was a regional and state runner-up to Northern-Calvert senior Drew Montgomery, winner of three Class 4A-3A state titles after placing second as a freshman.

Schmidt has split bouts with Class 4A-3A state champion Owen Pelaez of Clarksville, winning their state semifinal as a sophomore by technical fall before falling to Pelaez by 12-5 in last year’s state quarterfinal.

Schmidt lost last year’s regional finals by medical forfeit against Arundel’s eighth-ranked junior Matteo Brown, who has placed third, first and fourth in the Anne Arundel County, regional and Class 4A-3A state tournaments.

Pickett expanded on what had been only a 4-2 lead against Schmidt, who went 6-1 with three technical falls, pins in 22 and 40 seconds and a 10-0 major decision.

“It took me a while to get my last takedown against Beau Schmidt,” Pickett said. “I just had to remain consistent. I knew that would lead to me getting to those scores and takedowns more often against him.”

Other undefeated Gaels’ wrestlers were second-ranked senior Jake Tamai (132), second-ranked junior Tyler Stephens (144), third-ranked junior Connor Allison (150) all at 7-0, eighth-ranked junior Ben Scheiner (138) and sophomore C. J. Votta (126) both at 6-0, and 11th-ranked freshman Nathan Matthis (120) at 4-0.

Finishing at 6-1 were 17th-ranked freshman Max Solis (175) and junior Jacob Condon (285).

A returning MIAA champion and private schools state runner-up, Tamai earned falls in 14, 38, 49 and 63 seconds to go with another in 2:37 over ninth-ranked senior Braydon Roberts of Chesapeake-Anne Arundel

An runner-up in the Anne Arundel County and regional tournaments who placed fourth at Class 4A-3A states last year, Roberts went 5-2 with two each in pins and technical falls in the tournament.

Stephens is a returning MIAA and private schools state runner-up who registered six first-period pins comprising those in 21, 26, 29, 54, 59 and 95 seconds on the way to exactly matching the 100-victories mark.

Stephens’ 95-second fall was against ninth-ranked Calver Hall senior Joshua Jackson, who placed sixth and seventh at MIAAs and private school states last year.

Jackson finished the tournament with a 4-1 record that included pins in nine and 65 seconds and a 13-7 decision over Chesapeake-Anne Arundel’s 10th-ranked junior Rex Graves, who placed first, second and sixth at counties, regions and states last year.

Allison appears ready to improve on last year’s sixth- and fourth-place efforts at MIAAs and private schools, earning his six falls for the “Least Amount Of Time” Award. Allison’s pins comprised those in five, 11, 18, 32, 77 and 78 seconds to go with a 6-0 decision.

Allison’s 78-second fall was against senior Trevor Webb of Chesapeake-Anne Arundel, a returning fifth-place county finisher whose 4-1 record included two victories by pin and another by technical fall.

An MIAA runner-up who was fourth at states, Scheiner’s run included a 12-5 decision over Graves and pins in 72 seconds, 2:36 and 5:48.

Having placed third and fourth at MIAAs and private school states last year. Votta registered pins in 12 and 15 seconds to go with another in 3:34.

Votta also earned a 17-1 technical fall and a 13-1 major decision over Chesapeake-Anne Arundel’s 14th-ranked sophomore Carson Roberts, a county champion who was fourth at regions and sixth at states.

Matthis earned technical falls of 20-2 and 15-0 to go with a 67-second pin and 15-5 major decision over seventh-ranked sophomore Quin Greenstreet of Chesapeake-Anne Arundel.

Greenstreet went 7-1 with two each in pins and technical falls and a 12-1 major decision as he looks to improve on winning last year’s county and regional titles and a third-place finish at Class 4A-3A states.

Solis registered pins in all of his six victories but fell by 15-8 decision to Calvert Hall’s eighth-ranked junior Izaac Robertucci, who has returned after placing third and fourth at MIAAs and private school states.

Robertucci’s record of 6-1 included five falls comprising those in 61, 81 and 84 seconds along with those in 1:47 and 1:51.

Robertucci’s lone setback was against Fairfax High’s Kross Cassidy, who was named Outstanding Wrestler with a 7-0 record comprising five pins and two technical falls. Cassidy is currently ranked 16th in the nation by High School On SI.

Condon earned four pins and a technical fall but suffered a 12-2 major decision loss to Calvert Hall freshman Owen Stewart. Stewart’s 7-0 record included five first-period falls comprising those in 21, 29, 48 and 71 seconds to go with another in 1:42.

“Honestly, the early momentum we have as a team feels great, and all I can do as a team captain is to relay this momentum onto the rest of the team,” Pickett said. “We have to get our heads into the right mind set that the states and preps are closer than we think. We have to believe that we’re going to capture that state title along the way, and that we aren’t stopping anytime soon.”

Chesapeake’s 20th-ranked senior Gavin Lewis (215) won five of six bouts, including pins in 34, 64 and 84 seconds as well as an 18-0 technical fall and a 13-2 major decision.

Lewis’ lone setback was a 9-5 decision loss to Fairfax senior Harry Maltese, who went 7-0 with four of his five pins coming in the first period to go with a 15-0 technical fall.

Northeast-Anne Arundel junior Blake Harris (138) went 7-0 a technical fall, two major decisions and one of his three pins lasting only 69 seconds. Harris was a county runner-up last season.
