MSWA: South Qualifier 19U Results

The final weekend in April marked the Maryland State Wrestling Association’s second FRECO competition at Archbishop Spalding High School. There is one final opportunity for a tuneup ahead of the state tournament this coming weekend at Queen Anne’s High School on Sunday.

Six wrestlers doubled down on 19U crowns, the Headhunters’ Weston Baumgartner (138/144 pounds) and Ben Scheiner (150), plus Spalding's Grayson DeCosmo (113 pounds), Capital Wrestling Club’s Noah Tucker (190 pounds), Max Birth (Unattached at 215), and Coco’s John O’Neal (285).

Much like 16U, the majority of the brackets were contested in a round robin fashion, so when we refer to “finals” or something of the like, we are talking about when a wrestler met the second-place guy.

For Baumgartner it was Cavalier Wrestling Club’s William McDonough in Freestyle with a 10-0 technical fall in 1:39. McDonough beat Virginia’s Ari Runkle in FS but fell to Runkle in Greco Roman. Baumgartner teched Runkle, 8-0 in 22 seconds for his Greco glory.

Scheiner’s FS field was run as a regular bracket with him meeting Kenneth Buckholdt in the finals and dispersing him by fall in 1:13. Scheiner’s Greco Gold came on an 8-0 tech in 1:02 versus Logan King (McDonald Wrestling Academy).

The Headhunters had a third FS Champ in Christian Wirts (126/132 pounds), who stuck Team Takedown’s Austin Hayes in 2:48 during their round robin competition.

DeCosmo was awarded the FS Gold just by showing up, as he was the lone man in his bracket. To gain the GR Gold, DeCosmo swept Kelani Ramos, 8-0 (40 seconds) and 9-0 (44 seconds).

Tucker and Birth faced off with the same person to gain each title with Tucker teching Giuseppe DiMonte (Eagle RTC) twice. Their FS meeting was a true final with 190 pounds being a regular bracketed format and concluded with an 18-8 tech in 3:37. Tucker blanked DiMonte in GR, 8-0 in 1:02.

Birth’s wins came over the Headhunters’ Jonah Selassie. Both were best of three encounters with Birth planting Selassie twice in FS in 56 seconds and 1:25. In Greco, it began with an 8-0 tech in 30 seconds and then a 29 second pin.

O’Neal received a bye all the way to the top of the GR podium and decked Outsiders’ Cole Bryant in a round robin FS match in just 56 seconds.

Hayes won a Greco Championship by taking out Headhunters’ Owen Shelley in their 126/132-pound round robin competition. Hayes authored an 11-1 tech fall in 2:57.

Tyler Stephens (Headhunters) came out at 157 pounds and won a GR title over KeShon Bryant with an 8-0 tech in 1:05. Red Rock Wrestling Club’s Dominick Rossi took two straight from Rampage Wresting’s Riley Moore with pins in each of 16 and 32 seconds.

The way things worked out, Oxon Hill’s Braden-Stone Mack was declared the 165-pound FS Champ, but it was not that simple. Rossi bat Mack in the early rounds before defaulting out with an injury. Mack beat second place Nate Law, 13-3 (4:28), and bronze medalist, Moore, 12-1 (4:12).

The final champ hails from Virginia, and his name is Jeremia Aleman, and he got the best of Outsiders’ Evan Clarke with a 14-3 tech in 3:36.
