Results: 2A-1A East Region Championships

Huntingtown’s top-ranked junior Landen Vercoe (144) has spent the past two weekends winning his third straight crowns in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference and Class 2A-1A East Regional tournaments.

Vercoe has placed second and third at Class 2A-1A states and will attempt to improve on that effort for the 12th-ranked Hurricanes at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro next weekend.

Vercoe used three technical falls to outscore as many opponents by combined, 49-1, during last weekend’s Class 2A-1A East regional championship run at Queen Anne’s, improving his record on the year to 48-1 with 24 pins and 14 technical falls.

Vercoe’s path comprised a pair of 17-1 technical falls and a third by the score of 15-0 in his title match with Wicomico senior Corey Richardson.

During this season, Vercoe has split-victories with second-ranked Tyler Stephens of Mount St. Joseph, a winner of titles in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and Maryland Independent Schools State Tournaments.

Top-ranked 150-pound senior Seth Crawford is a returning Class 2A-1A state runner-up who has lost a 6-0 decision to Vercoe, who bumped up to 150 pounds to face him.

“I feel like my chances are good,” Vercoe said. “I just need to keep on performing the way that I know that I’m capable of.”

Joining Vercoe on the regionals victory podium was ninth-ranked sophomore Kyler Kiessling (120), a fourth-place state placewinner who added his second regional crown to his resume one week after winning his initial SMAC title to improve on the previous year’s third place finish.

Kiessling had three pins comprising those in 42 seconds, 3:51 and 82 seconds, the last in his title bout with Easton senior Esteban Velasquez.

Crowning two champions each were 23rd-ranked Rising Sun in second-ranked Zach Garvin (175) and 18th-ranked senior Tyler Henderson (157), 27th-ranked Parkside in 19th-ranked junior Canaan Cornish (126) and senior Masen Shahan (150), Kent County in seventh-ranked junior Tye Bellarin (132) and eighth-ranked senior Scottie Ford (165), and Cambridge-South Dorchester in senior Dion Edmunds (190) and sophomore Reggie Parker (285).

Garvin’s run comprised a 16-second pin and consecutive technical falls by 17-2 and 19-4, the last in the finals against Northeast-Anne Arundel senior Max Schmidt, who was fourth in Anne Arundel County’s tournament.

Henderson used an 82-second pin and another in 2:57 to reach the finals, where he earned a 7-0 decision over Huntingtown sophomore Ezikas Perez.

Cornish used a 17-2 technical fall and a pin in 2:52 to reach his championship match before edging Parkside sophomore Andrew Kimball by 5-4 decision.

Shahan’s run comprised a 16-1 technical fall, a pin in 3:44 and a 16-11 decision over Huntingtown freshman Ayden Leader.

After scoring a 21-4 technical fall and an 8-3 decision, Bellarin won his title match by fall in 3:21 over senior Landen Shanks of Queen Anne’s, who was third at states last year.

A returning fourth place finisher at states, Ford improved on last year’s second place finish at regions following a 16-1 technical fall, a 41-second pin and an overtime, 7-6 decision over North Caroline’s 19th-ranked junior Michael Dyke.

Edmunds had a fall in 3:01, a 10-6 decision and a title match pin in 5:32 against Calvert junior Mason Stebbing. Parker used a fall in 4:53 and an 8-3 decision to reach the finals, where he won an overtime, 3-2 decision against Kent Island senior Greg Coffey.

Other champions were Calvert’s fourth-ranked junior Ethan Valdisera (113), Colonel Richardson’s 11th-ranked junior Evan Alexander (138), Northern-Calvert’s 12th-ranked freshman Jake Kurtz (106) and Wicomico’s 25th-ranked senior Keven Mondestin (215).

Valdisera has an 80-0 record since transferring from St. Mary’s Ryken, where as a 113-pound freshman he was a champion in both the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and the Maryland Independent Schools State Tournaments.

A two-time Southern Maryland and regional champion, Valdisera is in pursuit of his second

straight Class 2A-1A state title this weekend at The Showplace Arena in Upper Marlboro after

finishing with last year’s record of 37-0 that included 23 pins and six technical falls.

Valdisera, whose current record is 43-0 with 15 pins and 17 technical falls, earned consecutive victories over Huntingtown’s sixth-ranked junior Owen Hayden for his second consecutive titles in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference and at this past weekend’s regionals.

On Saturday, Valdisera used a 23-second pin and an 18-2 technical fall to reach his title match with Hayden, whom he defeated by 6-2 decision a week after doing so by 17-1 technical fall in their SMAC championship bout.

Alexander won his title match by fall in 2:55 over Huntingtown’s ninth-ranked sophomore Logan Boyle after having advanced on a 16-0 technical fall and a 1-0 decision over Kent Island senior Silas Brobst.

Kurtz pinned all three opponents comprising those in 12 and 84 seconds to go along with another at 3:37 of his title bout with Queen Anne’s 23rd-ranked freshman Lincoln Shanks.

Mondestin won his crown in overtime, 4-3, over Kent Island senior Zach Bunce after having reached the finals following pins in seven seconds and 3:35.
