The dominance of Forest Park’s 22nd-ranked freshman Daerin Curry was on display at Randallstown last weekend, where the little-known grappler earned a Class 2A-1A North Regional title at 106 pounds.
Curry’s title run comprised a 53-second pin, another in 3:11 and a 19-3 technical fall in his title bout with C. Milton Wright freshman Lucas Heffner, running his record on the year to 30-1 with 13 pins and seven technical falls.
Heffner was a week removed from becoming a champion in the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference, whose record slipped to 33-3.
“This feels good, and I really thank God for this opportunity,” Curry said. “I’ve worked really hard for this, and I feel blessed that my family was here to see it. Now I’m ready for states.”
Sparrows Point crowned fifth-ranked junior Wyatt Rossi (113), 15th-ranked junior Brandon Wunder (126), 16th-ranked sophomore Chase Carnahan (132) and 21st-ranked junior Ryan Whisner (150).
Rossi won his third straight regional crown following pins in 61 and 92 seconds, the latter against Hereford freshman Chase Utz. Armed with a 106-9 career mark that includes this year’s record of 29-3, Rossi is a three-time county and regional champion on a mission to become the third Pointers’ wrestler to repeat as a Class 2A-1A state champion after having placed third as a freshman.
A two-time county champion who was third at regions last year, Carnahan used pins in 69 and 93 seconds to reach the finals, where he flattened Owings Mills senior Jeffery Baltazar in 75 seconds.
“I feel like this weekend was the best that I’ve wrestled so far this year,” Carnahan said. “I feel like I’ve wrestled to the point where I’m gaining momentum. I just need to keep pushing forward and finding ways to win.”
Wunder decked all three rivals by falls in 87 seconds, 2:00 and 2:29 of his title match with Carver A&T senior Sterling Addison. Wunder was a runner-up at counties following a 5-4 loss to Catonsville’s 14th-ranked sophomore Drew Eveleth, whom he had beaten, 6-5, earlier this season.
Wunder has now placed first once and second twice at counties, first, second and sixth at regionals, and third at states.
“I really don’t like losing, but I didn’t try to dwell on that [loss to Eveleth,]” Wunder said. “I just went right back into the room and worked on my strengths. My main goal is what it’s been all year, and that’s to win a state title.”
Whisner used a fall in 1:41 and a 5-3 semifinal victory to reach the finals, where he won by 4-0 decision over 17th-ranked Bel Air senior Andrew Montalvo. Whisner earned revenge with his semifinal victory over Hereford’s 20th-ranked senior Andy Burton, who defeated him, 7-4, in the previous weekend’s county finals.
Whisner became a county runner-up for the second straight year after placing third as a freshman and finishing third and fifth at regions in two previous seasons. Burton has won three county titles in four championship berths and placed fourth at regions.
“Last week, I feel like I lost focus heading into the match. After getting the first takedown, he got the reversal and back points,” Whisner said. “But that loss motivated me a lot, and I went back to the practice room and worked really hard for this.”
C. Milton Wright crowned fourth-ranked senior Aaron Moccia (190), junior Salah Dusmukhamedov (157) and senior Carson Windesheim (165).
Moccia registered pins in 42 and 81 seconds before flattening Forest Park senior Chad Dickerson Jr. in 55 seconds of their championship match.
“I felt confident in neutral and I knew that I could turn anybody from the top position,” Moccia told Legacy Wrestling’s Daniel Casey. “You don’t go into states feeling like, ‘I made it, now that’s it.’ I’m trying to take it all. I’m trying to take first at states.”
Moccia is a two-time champion in the regionals as well as the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference.
Moccia’s two setbacks this year were by major decision to Rising Sun's second-ranked senior Zach Garvin (175) and by 10-7 decision to Stephen Decatur’s second-ranked senior Pete Snyder (190),
Garvin has earned his fourth straight UCBAC title, three regional crowns in four championship berths, and has placed sixth, fifth and first at the past three Class 2A-1A state tournaments.
Snyder is an undefeated former National Preps champion and current Bayside Conference and regional title winner who is expected to challenge for a Class 4A-3A state title.
“They’re great wrestlers, but I don’t think I displayed my best wrestling,” Moccia told Casey. “I’ve just been working on my neutral, my bottom position, and my overall wrestling IQ.”
Windesheim earned three pins in 72 seconds, 1:44 and at 3:41 of his title bout with ACCE senior James Scott.
“I finished fourth [at UCBACs] last week, which was nowhere near what I wanted,” Windesheim said. “I was just consistently putting in the hard work in practice just wanting redemption and I’m 100 percent focused for the last part of this season.”
Dusmukhamedov ran the table with a 50-second pin, a 13-6 decision and a fall in 2:27 of his championship match with Forest Park senior Tyon Shuler.
“After finishing second [at UCBACs] last week, I really wanted to win this,” Dusmukhamedov said. “I went back to practice a lot more [determined.] I pushed myself harder, so winning this feels really good.”
Champions for Hereford were ninth-ranked senior Adam Keever (215) and 17th-ranked sophomore Connor Cline (120). A year ago, Keever was third at counties, fourth at regions and third at states, and Cline placed second, third and sixth in counties, regions and states.
Keever won by 17-0 technical fall before using a pin in 5:33 to reach the finals, where he won by 11-0 major decision over Harford Tech senior Mason Chesnavage.
“I had a tough loss in the county finals last week,” Keever said. “So, to come out here and to finally be called a champion is a great accomplishment. I’m shooting for the top at states.”
Cline used a fall in 3:18 and an 18-8 major decision to reach the title match, where he decked North East-Cecil County senior Syhrell Lewis in 5:12. Cline’s major decision over C. Milton Wright sophomore Rory Sweeney avenged an earlier loss.
“I lost to Rory Sweeney at regional duals, 9-7, and I needed that get-back in the semifinals,” Cline said. “I didn’t get the result I wanted at counties, so I had to battle back from last weekend. I came out and wrestled a pretty good final today, so I got what I wanted.”
Other champions were Lansdowne’s ninth-ranked senior Chase Swiger (175), Eastern Tech’s 14th-ranked senior Chase Ullman (144), Bel Air’s 15th-ranked junior Owen Reilly (285) and Owings Mills senior Jaserbek Abrorov (138).
Swiger’s title run comprised a 50-second pin, a 13-2 major decision and a 15-0 technical fall against Pikesville senior Elijah Dunn in the finals. A year ago, Swiger finished second, first and fifth at counties, regions and states after placing fourth at counties as a sophomore.
“I went out there with confidence that I could dominate,” Swiger said. “I even rode my legs today. I’m trying to keep that momentum going into the state tournament. I’m ready to face the top guys.”
Ullmann flattened all three opponents in 79 seconds, 2:55 and 44 seconds of his championship match with Bel Air senior Dominic Gray. As a sophomore, Ullmann placed second and sixth regionals and states, and as a junior, he won regionals and placed third at states.
“This last week before states, I’m going to be putting my best foot forward and training hard in the room,” Ullman said. “Whether it’s a pin, a technical fall, major decision or a decision, I’m just trying to win every single match.”
Reilly used a 57-second pin and a 2-1 decision to reach the finals, where he decked C. Milton Wright senior Cameron Stepp in 4:44. Reilly is a two-time champion in the UCBACs having placed third once, a two-time regional title-winner who has placed fifth once, and has placed sixth at states once.
“I’m ready for states,” said Reilly, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 270 pounds. “It’s all hard work and preparation, and it’s paying off. I’m ready for one last run at a state championship.”
Abrorov earned an 80-second pin and a 17-2 technical fall before winning his finals’ bout by 7-4 decision over Chesapeake-BC senior Jurius Lastimosa.
“I feel like I under-performed at counties,” said Abrorov of his fifth-place finish in the county tournament. “I told myself that I had to do way better than that this week, and I really wanted to win. Now I feel like I have some momentum.”
