Milford Mill's third-ranked senior Armory Hills (285) scored a 55-second fall over Randallstown's fourth-ranked junior Keon Stewart in their title match of Saturday's Class 2A-1A North Regional tournament at third-ranked South Carroll.
A University of Maryland-bound two-way lineman who stands 6-foot-6, Hills ran his record on the year to 27-0, including falls in 5:02, 24 seconds. Hill's victory over Stewart was a rematch of his 4-2 Baltimore County title match victory of a week earlier.
Hills has placed first, first and fourth in the past two county tournaments, first, third and second in the past three regional events, and third at each of the past two Class 2A-1A state tournaments.
"Taking first in the region, I felt very alive," Hills said. "I was full of steam, and each match, I dominated every match. I felt very much in control."
Hills was joined on the victory podium by senior teammate senior Ethan Royster (150), who rebounded to win the regional title after having finished third at the previous weekend's county tournament. Royster has a record of 29-7, having gone 3-1 at counties, where he earned falls in 48 seconds, 98 seconds and 5:00.
Royster reached the finals following pins in 93 seconds and 4:50, the latter avenging a 12-5 county semifinal loss to New Town senior Oluwajuwon Omotoso, who went on to win last weekend's Baltimore County title.
Royster won his regional title match by 13-4 major decision over seventh-ranked senior Angelo Marchany of South Carroll, a Carroll County champion who placed sixth at states last season and is a regional runner-up for the second straight year.
South Carroll crowned six champions in top-ranked sophomore Eli Gabrielson (120), second-ranked two-time Class 2A-1A state champion junior Jo Jo Gigliotti (144), second-ranked two-time state runner-up senior Evan Owen (138), fourth-ranked state champion junior Grayson Barnhill (113), fourth-ranked sophomore state champion Landon Hamper (190) and 15th-ranked sophomore Brody Henry (126).
Gabrielson is 37-0 on the season after using a 62-second pin and an injury default victory to reach his title match, where he scored a 19-3 technical fall victory over eighth-ranked C. Milton Wright senior Kane Desch, an UCBAC champion.
Gigliotti ran his record to 38-1 on three consecutive technical falls of 1904, 204 and 21-3, the latter against Patapsco senior Alex Hynes,
Owen has a record of 30-2 following his 18-0 technical fall and a pin in 1:55 as well as his championship bout 12-4 major decision over 12th-ranked senior Nate Taylor of Francis Scott Key, who was a Class 2A-1A state runner-up last season.
Barnhill and Hamper each improved their record on the year to 38-2, the former thanks to falls in 35 and 11 seconds as well as his title match 20-4 technical fall victory over 13th-ranked Sparrows Point sophomore Brandon Wunder, who is a Baltimore County champion.
Hamper used a fall in 2:59 and 19-4 technical fall to reach his title bout, where he won a 9-0 major decision over Liberty's eighth-ranked junior Kevin Kern.
A week earlier, Hamper won a clash of Carroll County champions, defeating Kern, 5-1. Kern has a record on the year of 37-3, having finished second at regions last year.
Henry rebounded after being dethroned as champion in the previous weekend's county finals, scoring technical falls of 17-2 and 16-0, the latter over senior Kenard Swinton of The Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE), who is a Baltimore City champion.
C. Milton Wright crowned a pair of champions in fourth-ranked junior Aaron Moccia (175) and eighth-ranked senior Devin Sweeney (165), as did Sparrows Point in fourth-ranked state champion senior Russell Fary (157) and eighth-ranked sophomore Wyatt Rossi (106)
Moccia followed up his UCBAC championship performance to improve his record on the year to 30-3. Moccia earned falls in 44 and 57 seconds before scoring a third one in his title match with Owings Mill junior Kelvin Alumonah, a Baltimore County runner-up.
Sweeney rebounded from his UCBAC runner-up finish with a fall in 3:57, an 11-0 major decision and a championship 4-1 overtime victory over 11th-ranked junior Cregg Ngounou of Owings Mills, a county champion.
Fary is 37-0 following his 19-4 technical fall, his 4-1 semifinal decision against Liberty's 13th-ranked senior state runner-up Dan Ohler, and his 7-3 championship decision victory over fifth-ranked junior Ladaynean Simpson, whom he blanked, 4-0, in the previous weekend's Baltimore County Tournament finals.
Rossi is 35-1 following his pins in 30 seconds, 2:14 and 3:51, the last in his title match with 12th-ranked South Carroll freshman Jake Simione, who is a county champion.
Eastern Tech's 17th-ranked junior Chase Ullman (132) earned his regional tournament crown a week after having won the Baltimore County title, running his record on the year to 23-1.
The 17th-ranked Ullman used a 16-1 technical fall and a 27-second pin to reach the finals, where his 20-4 technical fall dominated C. Milton Wright's 20th ranked senior Mitchell Nguyen, a third-place finisher in the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference (UCBAC).
Ullman's 27-second fall over Sparrows Point sophomore Ryan Whisner was a rematch of the previous weekend's Baltimore County title match, where he won by 17-2 technical fall.
In January, Ullman returned from a wrist injury to go 6-0 with two pins and four technical falls at the Falcon Invitational at Winters Mill, having placed third at counties as a sophomore when he also finished second at regions and sixth at states.
New Town junior Olusabom Atanlogun (215) won a regional title a week after becoming a Baltimore County champion, a run that started with an 11-3 major decision over Owings Mills senior Josh Savoy that represented a rematch of Atanlogun’s 1-0 victory over Savoy in their county title match.
Atanlogun won his semifinal match by 15-0 technical fall over Baltimore City champion Sahil Noor of Forest Park before earning a default victory over fifth-ranked state champion Manny Rodrigues of South Carroll. Rodrigues suffered a shoulder injury 27 seconds into their championship bout.
