Northern-Calvert’s top-ranked senior Drew Montgomery (144) is poised to win his third straight Class 4A-3A state title.
Bowie’s second-ranked senior Jamil Morrow (215) and South River’s ninth-ranked sophomore Jackson Peeples (113) remained on course to earn their second.
South River’s second-ranked senior Busayo Balogun (285) has maintained his quest to improve on his runner-up finish of a year ago as all four won Class 4A-3A East Region crowns on Saturday at Northeast High.
A state runner-up as a freshman, Montgomery ran his record to 35-0 with three technical falls. Montgomery’s victories comprised those by scores of 18-1, 20-2 and 16-1, the latter over Arundel’s sixth-ranked senior Luca Brown, an Anne Arundel County champion who has placed third at regions and fourth at states.
Morrow is 33-1 following a 70-second pin and consecutive technical falls of 20-5 and 19-4, the last over 18th-ranked junior Pearce Read of Arundel, a county runner-up.
A winner of three Prince George’s County titles after having placed third once, Morrow
became Bowie’s first state champion since 132-pound Nathaniel White in 2018.
Morrow is on pace to become the third Bulldog wrestler to win a pair of state titles, joining three-time champion Stanley Proctor and two-time title-winner Norman Brown.
Peeples used falls in 62 seconds and 2:00 to reach his title match, where he earned a 5-4 decision over 10th-ranked freshman Bentley Schmidt of Chesapeake.
Peeples is 32-6 on the year and 3-1 against Schmidt, whom he vanquished, 6-3, in their Anne Arundel County title match a week earlier.
A returning regional and Class 4A-3A state champion, Peeples improved his record on the year to 35-6. Schmidt has a record on the year of 32-4, which includes a 7-3 victory over Peeples.
Balogun has a record of 39-3 as a returning Class 4A-3A state runner-up who was third at counties and second at regions last season.
Balogun used falls in 27 and 4:50 to reach the finals, where he earned a 6-1 decision over Glen Burnie senior Elijah Boston. Balogun defeated Boston, 8-2, in the previous weekend’s county title match.
North Point crowned third-ranked senior Austin Wood (120) and 10th-ranked senior Gable Pauole (138), each of whom is a champion in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference whose records improved to 37-1 and 40-0, respectively.
Wood had 50-second fall before earning a 6-3 semifinal victory over 11th-ranked freshman Anne Arundel County champion Carson Roberts of Chesapeake and then winning his championship match, 8-0, against Chopticon senior Aiden Arnold in a rematch of his 16-1 technical fall over Arnold in their SMAC title bout.
Pauole used a 15-0 technical fall and an injury default victory to reach his title match, where he earned an 18-0 technical fall victory over Chesapeake’s 19th-ranked sophomore Rex Graves, an Anne Arundel County champion. Pauole was fourth at states last year.
Leonardtown’s seventh-ranked senior AJ Kuntz (157) senior teammate Trent Corbett (175) improved on their second and third place finishes at SMAC by winning regional titles.
A third-place finisher at states, Kuntz earned a 17-0 technical fall before a pair of opponents succumbed to medical forfeits, improving his record on the year to 40-2.
Corbett pinned his first opponent in 1:52, decisioned his second, 6-3, and won his championship bout by 11-5 decision over 25th-ranked senior county champion Matthew Curtin of Chesapeake.
Other regional champions were fourth-ranked sophomore Mike Groszkowski (132) of Annapolis, eighth-ranked junior Michael Queen (126) of Severna Park, 10th-ranked freshman Quin Greenstreet (106) of Chesapeake, 13th-ranked senior Linx Lawless (165) of Broadneck, 18th-ranked sophomore Matteo Brown (150) of Arundel, and junior Chris Millard (190) of South River.
Groszkowski, Queen, Greenstreet and Lawless added their regional crowns to their Anne Arundel County titles a week earlier.
Grozkowsk improved his record on the year to 37-1 with falls in 4:51 and 2:49 before scoring a 17-2 technical fall over junior Yasir Ruffin of Great Mills in the title bout.
A returning third place finisher at states, Queen raised his record on the year to 39-2 following a 53-second pin, an 18-10 semifinal major decision, and an 8-5 championship match decision over 13th-ranked junior Brayden Roberts of Chesapeake.
A 4-0 loser to Queen in their county title match a week earlier, Roberts’ record on the year is now 39-5.
Greenstreet has a record of 33-1 after winning by 19-3 technical fall, a semifinal pin in 3:15 over Glen Burnie sophomore Daniel Canas, and a 7-2 title bout decision over Chopticon freshman Zackary Scarborough.
Lawless pinned all three opponents as his record rose to 36-3 on falls in 58 seconds, 2:33 and 1:44, the last against Chesapeake junior Collin Richardson, whom he pinned in 1:53 of the previous weekend’s county title match
A third-place finisher at counties, Matteo Brown won by 11-3 major decision and by fall 5:05 to reach the finals. Brown won his title match by injury default over third-ranked junior Beau Schmidt of Northeast, who is a two-time Anne Arundel County champion and two-time state runner-up.
After finishing third at counties last week, Millard gained a measure of revenge. Millard won his first match by 8-3 decision over 23rd-ranked county runner-up senior Chris Coleman of Crofton, and his second by 4-1 decision over 24th-ranked senior Carter Alexander of North County.
Millard avenged a previous loss with his 6-1 decision over 13th-ranked senior Noel Norman Williams of Old Mill, an Anne Arundel County champion who had pinned Millard in 94 seconds of their county semifinal bout a week earlier.
