Results: 4A-3A East Region Championships

Severna Park's fourth-ranked 126-pound senior Michael Queen ran his record to 41-0 on Saturday at Henry Wise High School in Prince George's County, where he dominated by flattening all three opponents in the first period at the Class 4A-3A East Regional Tournament.

In succession, Queen pinned Stephen Decatur freshman Tanner Intrieri in 1:55, Bladensburg's Sayed Hashemi in 1:50, and Leonardtown's sixth-ranked freshman Dominique Herbert in 1:56 of their title match, with the latter's record slipping to 41-2.

Herbert was a week removed from winning the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Tournament crown as was Hashemi the Prince George's County event. Intrieri was fourth in the Bayside Conference.

Queen has now won three Anne Arundel County titles in four championship berths, three regional crowns and placed third once, and finished second and third at Class 4A-3A states.

Queen is also the Falcons' as well as the county's winningest wrestler with a career mark of 169-12 that includes 89 pins and 20 technical falls heading into this weekend's Class 4A-3A state tournament.

"I started wrestling when I was around five years old and my parents asked me if I wanted to try it out. [Former Severna Park coach] Paul Joyce had a clinic on the weekends called 'Falcons' Nest' at Severna Park, so I decided to give it a try," said Queen, who carries a 3.7 grade average and plans to major in accounting or finance at The University Of Alabama.

"When I first started, I was with a bunch of kids who had the same skill level as I did. Once I got into middle school, I was wrestling with kids who were better than me every day. It was tough, but I knew and could feel that I was getting better at each practice. I fell in love with the sport.. I have been working super hard this year -- harder than any other year. There have been outside of practice workouts and film study of my own matches. I am super eager and confident of potentially winning states this year."

The Falcons' fourth-year coach is Sam Ziff, a 2013 Severna Park graduate who was twice a county champion and a regional and state title-winner once each, the latter as a 152-pound senior.

Ziff wrestled for a graduated in 20178 from Edinboro University in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he called himself, "a career back up."

"I was on the team when Edinboro finished fifth and third in the nation. I gained a lot on college from being around such high-level wrestling, and Michael has a huge benefit to my coaching. He lost his freshman year in the blood rounds at states," said Ziff, whose career record of 132-16 ranks second behind Queen's at Severna Park.

"Michael and I have worked with him being comfortable in big situations. He has been the example I use to show kids how to approach wrestling. It's no coincidence that Severna Park has found tam success after having a kid like Michael on the team for nearly four years. I hope that I benefit Michael in his approach to wrestling in big situations."

Michael Queen lost last year's title match by 8-0 major decision to Walt Whitman's third-ranked senior Solomon Randall, a 126-pound a winner of three each in Montgomery County and regional titles who will be in pursuit of his third Class 4A-3A crown. Queen will have to reach the state finals to get a rematch with Randall, who has has a record of 37-0 and placed third at counties, regions and states as a freshman.

"I believe wholeheartedly that Michael can and will win a state title," Ziff said. "That is not to say that it will not be a challenge, but Michael has the talent, skill, work ethic and attitude to make it happen."

Queen's freshman brother, Jack, was a 106-pound regional runner-up a week after having won the county tournament with an 8-6 decision over Chesapeake's Hunter Wargo, and their uncle, Michael Stewart, is an assistant to Ziff.

"It’s been a blessing to be in Michael's corner the last two years, and I’m really grateful to Sam for bringing me on the coaching staff at the same school I once wrestled. With Jack on the team this year as well, each match has turned into a family affair. With parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends coming out to support them. That’s been really special," said Stewart, a 1997 Severna Park graduate placed first at regions and sixth at states.

"Michael is far better technically than I ever was, so I focus mostly on helping him with the mental side of the sport. Preparation, staying focused and not having any letdown matches. He’s doing a great job of taking this season one match at a time, not looking ahead and having fun at the same time. Michael has what my father called 'The three D’s - Dedication, Determination and Desire'. But he also has a huge heart, and he’s very humble about his successes; I’m really proud of the young man he’s become."

Stephen Decatur's top-ranked senior Elijah Collick (132) won his fourth, and second-ranked senior Pete Snyder (190) his first regional championship a week after each did the same at their Bayside Conference Tournament.

Collick and Snyder were joined on the victory podium by 25th-ranked senior Zak McDaniel (215), who improved on the previous week's runner-up finish in the Bayside Conference.

Collick followed a 20-3 technical fall with consecutive pins in 2:00 and 3:38, the last being in his title bout with Suitland's Cornillius Brown, who was a week removed from winning the Prince George's County crown,

Committed to The University of Nebraska, Collick became the Seahawks' first-ever four-time title winner of the conference and is attempting to become the program's first-ever four-time state tournament champion. Shipley has now won three county titles in four championship berths, placed first, third, fourth and fifth at regions, and fifth at states.

After finishing third at last year's counties, Burger is 41-2 on the year following a 16-2 major decision, a 15-0 technical fall and a pin in 3:26 of his title bout with Bowie senior Zacharie Coulibaly, winner of the previous week's county title.

A three-time Prince George's County champion, Hayes won his third straight regional title and is pursuit of his second consecutive Class 4A-3A state title after being second as a freshman. A year ago, Hayes completed a 39-0 state championship-winning season after losing his state title match as a freshman by two points and finishing at 40-1.

Foreman is a winner of his second straight county title after being a runner-up as a sophomore, and was second and third at last year’s regional and state tournaments.

Foreman’s 32-2 record last year included losses against Reservoir’s state runner-up Jose Lazo in the regional finals, and in the state semifinals to Northern-Calvert’s Drew Montgomery, winner of three state championships after being a runner-up as freshman.
