Perry Hall’s top-ranked Victor Marks-Jenkins has a career record of 195-1 with 153 pins and 15 technical falls, meaning he has tied Maryland’s all-time victories milestone for public school wrestlers of 195-5 held by South Carroll’s Joey Thomas, winner of three state championships over the course of 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Ranked 19th nationally, Marks-Jenkins is now a four-time champion in both the Baltimore County and Class 4A-3A North regional tournaments and in pursuit of his third consecutive Class 4A-3A state title after having placed third at states as a 145-pound freshman.
With a record on the year of 50-0 with 37 pins and two technical falls, Marks-Jenkins can break the state record with his first win at next weekend’s state tournament at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro.
“Breaking the career wins’ record for public schools would be a wonderful accomplishment,” said Marks’ Jenkins, who is bound for George Mason University. “It highlights the amount of work that I’ve put in. More than anything it’s a milestone for others to be inspired by, and my hope is that others would push themselves just as hard as I did to break it.”
Marks-Jenkins’ skills were on display at Edgewood High last weekend, where his regional title run comprised a 50-second pin, a 17-2 technical fall and a 7-0 championship bout decision over Catonsville’s 16th-ranked junior Josh Agen-Davis, whom he had blanked, 6-0, in the previous week’s county semifinal bout.
Perry Hall’s four champions were top-ranked Victor Marks-Jenkins (190), 12th-ranked senior Justin Kavanagh (157), 20th-ranked sophomore Gavin Young (113) and senior Jordan Young (175), the latter of whom are unrelated.
Kavanagh improved to 27-1 on pins in 57 seconds and 1:53 to go with a 15-0 technical fall over senior title bout rival Korben Suskinn of Towson, whom he flattened at 1:53 of their county finals match of a week earlier.
Gavin Young used pins in 34 and 93 seconds to reach the finals, where earned an 8-3 decision over Meade senior Savion Markham-Simmons.
Jordan Young used a 15-0 technical fall and a 15-8 decision to reach the title match, which he won by 11-6 decision over Parkville sophomore Breon Johnson.
Jordan Young gained a measure of revenge against Johnson, who had pinned him at 3:42 of their third-place match at last week’s Baltimore County Championships.
Kavanagh is now a two-time champion in the county and regional tournaments, while Gavin Young improved on last week’s county-runner-up finish, and Jordan Young, on his fourth-place effort.
Catonsville’s sophomore championship duo comprised 11th-ranked Owen Shelley (120) and 14th-ranked Drew Eveleth (120), each of whom is a repeat regional title-winner. Shelley and Eveleth were a week removed from winning their first Baltimore County titles after having been runners-up as freshmen.
Shelley has a record of 38-0 following a 16-0 technical fall, a pin in 3:57, and a 17-1 technical fall in his title bout with Crofton junior Nyle Borges. Eveleth 36-2 after a fall in 3:58 and 4:37 and a championship match 14-2 major decision over Meade senior Jalani Lewin.
Other champions were New Town’s eighth-ranked senior Olasubomi Atanlogun (215), Poly’s 13th-ranked senior Derrell Davis (144), Dundalk’s 16th-ranked Dylan Holt (285), Milford Mill’s 17th-ranked senior Christian Wright (132), Franklin’s 20th-ranked senior Josh Gray (150), Glen Burnie junior Daniel Canas (106), Crofton senior Dominick Rossi (138) and Towson senior Ryan Toung (165).
Atanlogun earned a 19-3 technical fall and pins in 3:04 and 2:39, the last in his championship bout with Patapsco senior John Martin
Armed with a record of 33-4, Atanlogun is two-time Baltimore County and regional champion who will attempt to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish at states
Davis ran his record to 32-1 following a 17-1 technical fall victory and pins in 79 seconds and 2:31, the latter in his title match with Crofton junior Carter Rermogosakul. Davis has earned two Baltimore City titles in three championship berths and finished second once and fourth twice at regions.
A third-year wrestler, Holt ran his record to 33-0 with 20 pins and one technical fall, doing so with consecutive falls in 2:24 and 2:52 before winning his title match by 11-1 major decision over Dulaney senior Brendan Taylor.
Standing 6-foot-3, Holt is attempting to become the Owls’ fourth state champion following Rick Staab (1992), Dan Simancek (1996) and Robert Doetsch (2017).
Wright ran the table with a pin in 2:45 followed by consecutive technical falls by scores of 19-2 and 18-2, the latter against Digital Harbor senior Jerry Harris. Gray pinned all three opponents comprising those in 2:34, 4:00 and 87 seconds of his title match with Crofton junior Cian Santos.
Rossi earned consecutive decisions by scores of 8-2 and 11-5 before finishing Dundalk senior Clayton Fraser at 91 seconds of their championship match.
Canas’ run included pins in 30 and 74 seconds to go with a third at 2:49 of his title match with Meade freshman Rafatullah Houssaini. Toung earned a 9-7 decision before receiving consecutive victories by medical forfeit.
Wright improved on last week’s runner-up finish in Baltimore County’s tournament, as did
Gray on his third-place effort in Baltimore County. Rossi did the same regarding the previous week’s fifth place finish in Anne Arundel County’s tournament, as did Toung on his sixth placing in Baltimore County’s tournament.
