Results: 4A-3A South Region Championships

Saturday’s Class 4A-3A South Regionals at Laurel High were about redemption for 14th-ranked senior Jonah Chen of Montgomery Blair, whose past includes disappointment and season-ending injuries.

Chen won his first match by 8-7 decision over Chesapeake-Anne Arundel’s eighth-ranked senior Brayden Roberts, his quarterfinal by 14-6 major decision over Sherwood senior JJ Andrews, and his title match by 16-5 major decision against Oakland Mills junior Orlando Castelan-Cortez.

Not only did Chen win the first tournament of his high school career, but he also avenged previous losses to Andrews and Castelan-Cortez.

“As a freshman I got second in the county on junior varsity at 120 pounds. As a sophomore, I had 21 wins at 126 pounds, but I lost in the blood round of counties to JJ Andrews and didn’t qualify for regions,” Chen said.

“As a Junior I tore the UCL [Ulnar Collateral Ligament] in my right arm. I wrestled in the postseason where I got fourth at counties at 132 pounds. But I lost in overtime of the regionals in the blood rounds to [Castelan-Cortez.]”

Chen also rebounded from the previous week’s runner-up finish at Montgomery County Tournament, where he lost his title match by technical fall to 13th-ranked senior regional champion Chris Lindstrom of fifth-ranked Whitman.

“My match with Lindstrom was disappointing. He was a very good wrestler, but I didn’t expect to lose by a technical fall,” Chen said. “I try not to maintain a mentality of not worrying about previous losses. Over the next week, I rewatched the match with my coaches and found ways to improve.”

In Castelan-Cortez, Chen defeated a three-time Howard County champion who had finished third and fourth at regions.

Equally impressive was Chen’s victory over Roberts, a winner of two Anne Arundel County titles in three championship berths after placing third a freshman, and a two-time regional runner-up and who has finished fourth at states.

“I was ecstatic about the win against Roberts. I knew he was a returning state place winner and the toughest kid in the bracket,” Chen said. “I was definitely the underdog in that match. I used that for motivation. I could definitely feel that the regional title was in reach. I’m planning on taking these adjustments and lessons into the state tournament.”

Winning titles for 36th-ranked Magruder were eighth-ranked senior Sava Makarov (126), 10th-ranked sophomore Hunter Hertz (106) and sophomore Colin Murphy (120), with Makarov and Hertz improving on their third-place finishes in the previous weekend’s Montgomery County Tournament, and Murphy, his fifth-place effort.

Makarov dominated with pins in 74 and 80 seconds to go with a 17-2 technical fall in his title match with Blake senior Brody Matson.

Hertz earned a 95-second pin and another in 5:46 before winning a 4-1 overtime decision over Reservoir sophomore Milano Orduna, a two-time Howard County champion who placed fourth at last year’s regionals.

Murphy’s run comprised an 18-11 decision and pins in 87 and 92 seconds, the last in his championship bout with Oakland Mills freshman Ramon Rodriguez.

Seventh-ranked Chesapeake crowned two champions in second-ranked sophomore Corey Brown (132) and 11th-ranked sophomore Quin Greenstreet (113), as did Sherwood with their pair of seniors being third-ranked AJ Lopez (215) and 10th-ranked Connor Flickinger (157).

Brown used a 67-second pin and a 16-1 technical fall to reach the finals, where he decked Richard Montgomery junior Joey Womack in 1:54.

A transfer from second-ranked Mount St. Joseph, where he earned a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association title, Brown has a record of 19-0 with 11 pins and three technical falls.

Greenstreet earned his second consecutive regional title after winning by 61-second pin, 5-1 decision over 16th-ranked sophomore Nick MacWilliams of Bethesda-Chevy Chase, and 7-1 against Sherwood junior Landon Clore in the finals.

Clore finished second in the Montgomery County Tournament where MacWilliams was third in advance of facing Greenstreet, a two-time county champion who has placed third at states,

Having won the Montgomery County Tournament the previous weekend, Lopez improved his record on the year to 31-2 with 19 pins and three technical falls, using a fall in 1:42 and a 18-2 technical fall to reach the finals to receive a medical forfeit.

A two-time county champion who was sixth at regions last year, Flickinger used pins in 51 and 98 seconds to reach the finals, where he earned a 22-6 technical fall over Marriotts Ridge senior Henry Phillips.

Other champions were Oakland Mills’ top-ranked Raul Rodriguez (165), Richard Montgomery’s eighth-ranked Isisah Womack (144), Atholton’s 14th-ranked junior Thomas Mackenzie (175), Old Mill senior Trey Martini (150), Laurel senior Noah Mayen (190) and Springbrook junior Dominick Jamison (285).

Rodriguez’s path included a 19-4 technical fall and a 14-3 major decision over Chesapeake’s 18th-ranked senior Owen Collins, a county champion. Rodriguez earned a 19-3 technical fall in the finals over Laurel sophomore Aziel Batoua, who was third in Prince George’s County.

Rodriguez is on a mission to improve on last year’s runner-up finish at Class 4A-3A states, having earned his third county title and his second regional crown in three title match berths.

Womack’s run included an 18-2 technical fall, a 13-1 major decision over 15th-ranked junior Rex Graves of Chesapeake-Anne Arundel, a county champion who has placed second and fourth at regions and sixth at states.

Having won his championship bout by fall in 3:00 over Kennedy sophomore Julien Szell, Womack is now a two-time Montgomery County and regional tournament champion whose 40-0 record a year ago included winning the Class 4A-3A state tournament.

Mackenzie won his first match by 17-0 technical fall, his second by 11-10 decision over Marriotts Ridge sophomore Max Hargrove, and his title bout by medical forfeit.

Mackenzie’s semifinal was a rematch with Hargrove, whom he decked in 1:45 of their previous week’s Howard County finals. Mackenzie has now placed first and second at counties and first and second at regions.

Martini’s run comprised three decisions by scores of 7-3, 3-2 in overtime and 14-9 in his title match with Marriotts Ridge sophomore Caiden Hargrove. Martini’s overtime victory was against Laurel junior Caldwell Ford, a Prince George’s County Tournament runner-up.

A fourth-place finisher in the previous weekend’s Prince George’s County Tournament, Mayen ground out decisions by scores of 6-4, 8-5, and, 10-7, the last in his championship bout with Montgomery Blair senior James Attis.

Jamison earned falls in 1:47, 2:45 and 3:57, the latter against Sherwood junior Myles Hopkins, whom he pinned for third place in the previous weekend’s Montgomery County Tournament.
