Results: 4A-3A West Region Championships

Clarksburg crowned a pair of Class 4A-3A West Regional Champions in the junior identical Fisahaye twins, as fifth-ranked Amanuel (106) and 15th-ranked Aaron (113) improved their records on the year to 43-2 and 38-7 respectively at Seneca Valley.

Not only did the third-year wrestling duo compete while being a week removed from winning their first-ever titles in the Montgomery County Tournament at Gaithersburg High, but they are riding the momentum established by alumni Johnathan Chang and Owen Pelaez, who earned the Coyotes' first- and second-ever state championships over back-to-back seasons in 2024 and 2025.

Chang became the Coyotes’ first-ever state champion as a senior at 144 pounds in the Class 4A-3A tournament, improving on his state runner-up finish of a year earlier after having placed third as a sophomore. Chang also won his third straight Montgomery County and Class 4A-3A West Region crowns.

Pelaez then completed an undefeated season at 150 pounds that included becoming a four-time county champion, winning his third Class 4A-3A West Region title in four championship berths, and also his first state title after having placed fifth and third as a sophomore and junior.

Both Chang and Pelaez won the “Richard J. Monisera Award for Achievement” at their respective county tournaments, an honor bestowed annually upon “The Senior Wrestler who earned the most Career MCPS Tournament Points.”

Amanuel scored a 15-2 major decision and a 19-2 technical fall in his semifinal with Walt Whitman's sixth-ranked Noah Reising-Rubli, whom he defeated by 11-5 decision in the previous week's county finals to avenge an earlier 12-7 decision loss.

Amanuel won his regional title match by 4-2 decision over Oakdale's seventh-ranked sophomore Paul Fitzpatrick IV. Fitzpatrick was a runner-up for the second straight season a week after winning the Frederick County Tournament crown. Fitzpatrick finished third and fourth at last year’s county and state tournaments.

Aaron required a 15-3 major decision, a 5-4 decision in his semifinal, and a 7-1 title match decision over Tuscarora junior Eugene Amardi-Frimpong, a Frederick County Tournament runner-up. Aaron's semifinal victory was against Linganore's ninth-ranked junior Jayden Lassiter, who was a week removed winning the Frederick County Tournament crown by forfeit.

"Aaron and Amanuel have just put in so much work, and they've been non-stop since they began wrestling just three years ago," said Coyotes’ coach Rob Pinsky, a 1986 graduate of Kennedy High where he was a two-time Montgomery County runner-up. "Whether it's the summer, fall, winter or spring, they're going at it all year long, attending camps and learning as much as they can. I'm just super happy for these two guys."

Fifth-ranked Walt Whitman crowned a tournament-high five champions in third-ranked seniors Solomon Randall (126) and Andy Boshnick (285), fourth-ranked senior Zach Richards (215), seventh-ranked junior Jabasie Trice (120) and 13th-ranked senior Chris Lindstrom (138)

Randall won Saturday’s championship match by 4-3 decision over Clarksburg’s seventh-ranked junior David Dansou after reaching the finals on a 6-1-second pin and a 19-3 technical fall. Their clash was a rematch of the previous week's Montgomery County Tournament final, where Randall earned a 7-3 decision over Dansou.

"David Dansou, Amanuel Fisahaye and Aaron Fisahaye are inseparable. We jokingly call them the triplets, even though David is not related to the twins," Pinsky said. "These three have done everything a coach could ask for during the season and out of the season. They wrestled in summer leagues, camps, mat clubs and tournaments during the spring, summer and fall. I'm so happy to see their hard work paying off."

Randall improved his record to 37-0 with 25 pins and five technical falls with his third straight regional title. Armed with the school’s all-time career victories mark of 159-7, Randall has now won three county titles and will pursue his third consecutive Class 4A-3A state title this weekend. Randall was third at counties, regions and states as a freshman.

Having become only the Vikings’ second repeat state champion, Randall can graduate having matched three-time state champion Eren Civan, a 2007 graduate who did not complete his senior year due to a season-ending injury. Civan held the previous career victories mark with 135.

Boshnick is 39-1 with 28 pins after falls in 91 seconds, 1:43 to go with an 8-1 decision in his title match with fourth-ranked Walter Johnson senior Daniel Gershon, whom Boshnick decked in 4:21 of the previous weekend's county finals. Gershon was dethroned as county champ after being third at regions and fourth at states last year.

After finishing second at counties, Richards improved to 37-1 with 26 pins and two technical falls following a pin in 3:06, a 19-3 technical fall and a 7-4 decision over Linganore's 10th-ranked junior Alex Tortalani, a Frederick County champion.

Trice is a two-time county champion who was sixth at states last season, but he improved on his runner-up regional finish of a year ago. Trice 38-0 with 20 pins and 10 technical falls following a pin in 2:34, a 19-3 technical fall and a 4-3 Clarksburg freshman Mason Kellar.

"Mason Kellar is having a great freshman campaign. He wrestled most of the season at 126 and is thriving after the drop to 120," Pinsky said. "Kellar suffered a couple tough losses in our county tournament and didn't place. He certainly bounced back for regionals, placing second to a very good Trice from Whitman."

After being fourth at counties and second at regions last year, Lindstrom is 41-1, following up last weekend's county championship victory with another at regions. Lindstrom's path comprised identical technical falls of 17-2 followed by a 5-1 championship bout victory over Tuscarora's 16th-ranked senior Austin Flook, who was second in Frederick County last week.

Frederick crowned a pair of champions in sixth-ranked senior Ian Tumi (175) and 11th-ranked junior Victor Guerra (157), who improved their records to 37-2, and 31-1.

A repeat Frederick County and regional champion, Tumi dominated with a 29-second pin and another in 2:31 before winning his title match by 14-4 major decision over seventh-ranked Northwest senior Adrian Johnson, who was a Montgomery County champion. Tumi's 40-2 record a year ago included winning the Frederick County and Class 4A-3A West Regional tournaments and being a Class 4A-3A state runner-up.

A year ago, Guerra was a county champion, a regional runner-up and finished third at states. On Saturday, Guerra followed up his county championship run by winning regionals following a pin in 1:48, a 19-4 technical fall and another pin in 4:21 of his title match with Damascus junior Logan Romeo, a Montgomery County runner-up.

Other champions were Northwest's second-ranked junior Logan Brown (165), Quince Orchard's fifth-ranked senior Ziya Khozhugov (190), Thomas Johnson's fifth-ranked senior Rhys Ferguson (144), Linganore’s eighth-ranked Cash Wheat (150), and Rockville's 19th-ranked senior Damian Melendez (132).

Brown added the regional title to last week's Montgomery County version and is 36-0 a year after finishing second, first and third in the county, regional and Class 4A-3A state tournaments. Brown ran the table with a fall in 3:45, a 20-3 technical fall and a 17-6 major decision over Whitman's 21st-ranked junior Luke Monaco, whom he defeated by 22-6 technical fall in the county finals.

Khozhugov followed up last week's county championship victory by repeating as a regional champion who was fifth in the county and state tournaments last year. Khozhugov has a record of 40-0 after pins in 82 and 76 seconds to go along with a 19-3 technical fall in his title match with Whitman senior Jacob Sherman, who was third at counties last week.

Ferguson rebounded from the previous week's Frederick County runner-up finish by taking regionals following a 58-second pin, a 16-1 technical fall and an 87-second pin in his championship bout with Churchill's 19th-ranked junior Mason Hu, a Montgomery County runner-up. Ferguson has also placed second once and third twice at counties, fourth and second at regions, and third at Class 2A-1A states.

Wheat improved on last week's Frederick County runner-up finish by winning his crown with an 8-0 decision over Whitman's sixth-ranked senior Matthew Hobbs, who was a county champion a week ago. Wheat used pins in 1:41 and 2:41 to reach the finals against Hobbs, improving his record on the year to 41-2.

Melendez won a rematch of the previous week's county final by 4-2 decision over Whitman's 18th-ranked senior Adan Magnas, who beat him by 5-3 decision at counties. Melendez has a record of 40-1 after a fall in 2:19 and a 5-4 semifinal decision over Westminster's 22nd-ranked junior Zachary Bowersox, who was a Carroll County runner-up.
