Results: Grapple at the Brook

Walt Whitman’s third-ranked senior Solomon Randall (132) earned his 100th career pin and was among seven champions, 10 finalists and 11 teammates who finished within the top four of their weights as the six-ranked Vikings won last weekend’s Grapple At The Brook Tournament at Springbrook.

Joining Solomon on the victory podium were seventh-ranked senior Zach Richards (215), 10-ranked senior Chris Lindstrom (138), 13th-ranked seniors Adan Magnas (144), Andy Boshnick (285), 16th-ranked junior Noah Reising-Rubli (106) and senior Jacob Sherman (190).

Runners-up were seventh-ranked senior Matthew Hobbs (157), 20th-ranked junior Luke Monaco (165) and senior Tom Kemp (175), with a fourth-place finish from senior Owen Dinces (126) as the Vikings (285 points) overcame 17th-ranked runner-up South River (225).

Under 19th-year coach Derek Manon, whose top assistant, Will Sharbaugh, was a Class 4A-3A state champion for the Vikings with a 37-0 record in 2006, the Vikings are defending Montgomery County Tournament champions who are in pursuit of their third straight Class 4A state dual meet crown.

The Vikings won last month’s Dick Slutzky Golden Eagles’ Duals Tournament at Aberdeen High as well as the Pat Briscoe Memorial Tournament at Parkside, but at Springbrook were without injured 10th-ranked junior Jabasie Trice (126), who was first, second and sixth in counties, regions and states last year.

“Jabasie’s feeling much better, thankfully,” said Manon. “He tweaked a knee in a dual meet late last week.”

Randall used consecutive technical falls of 19-2 and 18-3 to reach the finals, where his 100th-career pin came in 2:54 over sophomore Blake Walker of Cape Henlopen, Delaware.

Randall won his second straight Class 4A-3A state title last year after placing third at states as a freshman and has won two each in county and regional crowns after having placed third in each as a freshman.

As only the Vikings’ second repeat state champion, Randall can match three-time state champion Eren Civan, a 2007 graduate who could not compete at states as a senior due to a season-ending injury.

Randall’s record on the year is 22-0 with 15 pins and three technical falls, and his career mark of 144-7 with 100 pins and 17 technical falls has surpassed Civan (135 career victories) to make him the Vikings’ all-time leader.

“I knew that my 100th career pin could come in the finals, and I’m glad I was able to do it in the finals. I’ve been working hard for this, and it feels great,” Randall said. “I got my 100th win at this tournament last year, so to reach 100 career pins in the same tournament is really satisfying. We’ve been working hard for four years to have a team like this one. I’m so proud of my teammates to have a performance like this.”

Richards spent just over 1:45 on the mat over the course of his three bouts, while Boshnick’s three matches also lasted less than two minutes.

Richards registered falls in 12, 50 and 43 seconds, the last in his title match with Reservoir senior Kalen Mackall, a returning Howard County Tournament runner-up.

“The pinning move I used in the finals is called ‘The Cow-Catcher.’ I can usually bait and catch them when their head goes down,” Richards said. “I can usually force them over to their back from there. I think I was able to use it in all of my matches in this tournament, and it’s a move that’s helped me out a lot.”

Boshnick’s work comprised falls in 30, 56 and 60 seconds, the last in his title match with seventh-ranked Bel Air junior Owen Reilly.

Reilly is a defending champion in the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference (UCBAC) and Class 4A-3A North Regional Tournaments who placed sixth at Class 4A-3A states.

“I had a bar-arm in [on Reilly,] and I knew he expected me to go the normal way. So, I grabbed his chin, went the other way and pinned him,” said Boshnick, who was third at counties and fifth at regions last season and was ranked 13th going into the finals.

“I knew he was ranked higher than me, so I really wanted to beat him. But to do it here and to win this tournament is really awesome. I think we’ve matured into an all-around great team in both dual meets and tournaments.”

Lindstrom used a fall in 1:54 and a 16-1 technical fall to reach his title match, where he earned a pin in 2:20 over Atholton senior Chase Garrison. Garrison placed fourth and third in last year’s Howard County and Class 4A-3A South Regional tournaments.

“When I was up, 3-0, in the second period, and then he chose top, I sat out and [Garrison] was facing me. So, I shot a double-leg takedown and stayed in tight,” said Lindstrom, who was fourth at counties, second at regions and has a record of 18-1 this season.

“The half-nelson was there, so I just took him to his back and decked him. We had some starters missing, but we had other guys step up to the plate like Owen Dinces and Tom Kemp. When you look at our team and this particular performance, you can see that it’s going to be really hard for other teams to match our level of depth.”

Magnas rolled through his competition following a 3-2 quarter final decision over sophomore Tadeo Lares of Cape Henlopen.

From there, Magnas earned technical falls by 19-1 and 19-4, the latter against Bel Air senior Dominic Gray, a runner-up in the UCBAC last season.

“Last year I think I went 2-2 and didn’t place at this tournament, so this was a big test for me. I only weighed 139 pounds this morning after eating and drinking,” said Magnas, who placed sixth at counties and regions.

“The weight class was actually like 147 pounds with the weight allowance, so every one of my opponents was bigger and stronger than me. Those were some big boys, so for me to be able to get bonus points against them means a lot.”

Reising-Rubli’s run comprised pins in 63-seconds and 3:04 before winning his championship bout 12-7 decision over third-ranked junior Amanuel Fisahaye of Clarksburg, a Montgomery County champion who placed third at Class 4A-3A West Regionals.

“I made a decision to cut from 113, and that worked out for me. I was able to apply constant pressure,” said Reising-Rubli, who led, 5-1, and 6-5, before pulling away. “I got a little stressed, but the coaches helped me to calm down and collect myself. I was able to bring it all together and overwhelm him for the win at the end.”

Sherman earned consecutive falls in 97 seconds and 1:42 to reach the finals. That’s where his takedown with 38 seconds remaining secured a 7-4 decision over South River’s 20th-ranked senior Evan Paximadas, who was fourth in last year’s Anne Arundel County Tournament.

“When the score was 4-4, I looked at the clock and tried a high-crotch takedown, but he had good defense,” Sherman said. “I had to drop down to the ankle to get him to the mat. The momentum I had was a product of watching my teammates win before me. I train hard with my teammates every day.”

Runner-up South River crowned ninth-ranked junior Jackson Peeples (113), 15th-ranked senior Chris Millard (175) and junior Ethan Burger (150).

Peeples earned pins in 54 and 75 seconds before decking Clarksburg junior Aaron Fishaye in 5:20 of their title match. Peeples has won a pair of Anne Arundel County and Class 4A-3A East Regional titles and placed first and fifth at Class 4A-3A states.

“It was a scoreless first period and he wrestled well, getting some shots in,” said Peeples, who became the Seahawks’ first-ever freshman to win a state title.

“But I was able to feel him out, defend and get to my offensive attacks. There was a lot of pressure on me last year, especially after having a preseason injury. But I’m going hard every match this year and wrestling like I have nothing to lose.”

Millard decked all three of his rivals in the second period on falls in 3:03, 3:09 and 3:21, the last against Kemp.

“I took him down and was thinking about using a tilt, but my coach was yelling ‘punch it,” said Millard, who was third, first and sixth at last year’s counties, regions and states. “It was kind of like a ‘Cement Job.’ I won the Easton Tournament, so I’m feeling pretty good about my improvements.”

A third-place finisher at counties, Burger used pins in 70 seconds and 1:59 to reach the finals, where he earned a 7-2 decision over Bel Air’s senior UCBAC tournament runner-up Andrew Montalvo.

“I wasn’t able to finish too many of my leg attacks, but my shot defense worked really well, and I was able to score some points,” Burger said. “This is the second tournament I’ve ever won in high school counting the one at Easton. This feels pretty good, but there is always more work to do.”

Other champions were top-ranked senior Alex Ouzts (165) of Jackson Reed and

20th-ranked sophomore Dominic Esposito (120) of Long Reach.

A two-time winner of the Springbrook Tournament after placing third once, Ouzts’ run comprised a pin in 2:28 and consecutive technical falls by scores of 19-3 and 18-0, the last against Monaco.

“I felt like I had the competitive advantage in the beginning,” said Ouzts, a defending champion in the District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association (DCIAA).

“I saw him breaking down in the third period of his previous matches, so I was just controlling my tie-ups and working on what I knew. I was able to build my momentum and get the technical fall.”

Named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler, Esposito used pins in 2:15 and 5:09 to reach the finals, where his overtime, 7-6 decision edged South River’s 16th-ranked senior Tent Shipley.

In Shipley, Esposito defeated a wrestler who has won a pair of county titles in three championship berths, placed third, fourth and fifth at regions, and fifth at states.

As a freshman, Esposito became the Lighting’s third-ever Howard County champion before also winning Class 4A-3A South Regionals.
