Archbishop Spalding had been on a roll until Tuesday at second-ranked McDonogh, where the top-ranked Cavaliers suffered an upset, 34-30, dual meet loss in a MIAA league match.
But on Saturday at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, the Cavaliers crowned three individual champions among five finalists on the way to earning their second straight War On The Shore Tournament Crown.
Top-ranked senior Zane Leitzel (157) and top-ranked junior Eli Gabrielson (126) earned their second consecutive crowns, top-ranked sophomore Charlie Mutschler (113) improved on last year’s fourth-place effort, there were runners-up in 14th-ranked sophomore Luke Winkler (190) and 16th-ranked junior Mike Byrne (285).
The finalists were among eight wrestlers who finished in the top four, and nine within the top six of their divisions as the Cavaliers (260.5 points) overcame fourth-ranked second-place Mount St. Joseph (226) and the rest of the 30-team field.
“Obviously it felt great watching our kids compete and being as dominant as they were,” said 24th-year coach Mike Laidley, whose Cavaliers dethroned sixth-ranked Gilman for last year's MIAA Tournament crown before tying the Greyhounds for the Maryland Independent/Private Schools' title.
“Wrestling Loyola after the McDonogh loss was a confidence booster. We gave some wrestlers a break from making weight because we had four weigh-ins in five days, and one starter out of the line up at 150 [Ryder Kolat,] but [McDonogh] wrestled well and deserved the credit. There was a lot of growth this weekend with our upper weights, and it did feel good.”
Finishing third were fourth-ranked sophomore Isaac Cicchetti (132) and sixth-ranked freshman Lane Gowl (106), with fourth- and sixth-place efforts from 15th-ranked senior Josh Taylor (165) and ninth-ranked junior Luke Barulli (215).
“War On The Shore is definitely a tournament where we load up, and we definitely took it personally when we lost to McDonogh,” Leitzel said. “We came back and drilled Loyola right after losing to McDonogh, so we didn’t dwell on it. We just loaded up and were more motivated at War On The Shore.”
Leitzel also cited the emergence of Barulli and Byrne.
“Mike and Luke are two guys who have been in the room grinding it out,” Leitzel said. “They were under the radar, so this tournament was their chance to shine.”
The runner-up Gaels’ lone champion was top-ranked sophomore Brooklyn Pickett (150), a returning Maryland Independent/Private Schools’ champion who decked all five opponents.
Pickett was joined as a finalist by second-ranked senior teammate Jake Tamai (132), a returning Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and private schools state runner-up.
Second-ranked South Carroll (168, third) had a champion in senior Jo Jo Gigliotti (138), who earned Outstanding Wrestler honors by winning a clash of top-ranked, three-time state titlists, 8-7, over senior Elijah Collick of 15th-ranked host Stephen Decatur.
Fifth-ranked Loyola crowned top-ranked freshman Charles Cooper (106), with runners-up in top-ranked sophomore Tyler Verceles (120) and second-ranked senior Jayden Jackson (126).
A returning MIAA runner-up, private schools champion and fifth place National Prep finisher,
Verceles was dethroned as War On The Shore champion following a 4-0 decision loss to title-winning junior Zack Dixon of Xavier High in Connecticut.
Top-ranked junior Noah Tucker (175) was a repeat War On The Shore champion for 26th-ranked Bullis, which also had a runner-up in seventh-ranked sophomore Soshiant Ahanj-Elias (165), a returning third place finisher in last year’s private school states.
Stephen Decatur senior Pete Snyder (215) is top-ranked at 190 pounds, but he rose in weight to emerge victorious in a division that included second-ranked, two-time Class 2A-1A state champion Landon Hamper of South Carroll, and third-ranked private schools state champion Evan Gavin of St. Mary’s Ryken.
Snyder defeated Gavin, 10-7, in the finals, and Hamper finished fourth after being third at last year’s War On The Shore.
Seventh-ranked senior Aaron Moccia (190) was the title-winner for 28th-ranked C. Milton Wright, becoming the Mustangs’ first-ever War On The Shore champion.
Moccia went 5-0 with three of his four pins being in the first period, raising his record on the year to 11-1 with 10 pins and improving on last season’s fifth-place finish at War On The Shore.
The following is a break-down of the championship bouts, in order, by weight.
138 pounds: No. 1 Jo Jo Gigliotti (South Carroll) dec. No. 1 Elijah Collick (Stephen Decatur), 8-7:
The tournament’s marquee bout lived up to the hype featuring Gigliotti and Collick, who are top-ranked by Legacy Wrestling at top-ranked at 138- and 132-pounds, respectively.
The top-seeded Gigliotti registered a 16-second pin, a 19-2 technical fall and another pin in 1:45 to reach the semifinals, where he scored an 11-0 major decision over senior Alex Belfer of West Chester Henderson High School in Pennsylvania.
The second-seeded Collick earned his semifinal berth following a 13-second pin and consecutive technical falls of 18-3, 20-5 and 17-2. Collick won his semifinal by 9-1 major decision over Mount St. Joseph’s eighth-ranked junior Ben Scheiner of Mount St. Joseph.
In the finals, Gigliotti led, 4-0, midway through the second period before Collick’s takedown brought him within 4-3. Gigliotti led by as much as 8-4, in the third before Collick closed the gap with an escape and a pair of stalling calls against the winner.
“Much respect to Elijah Collick for the fact that we really tested one another, and that’s how it should be,” Gigliotti said. “It was about each of us trying to wrestle the best that we could and testing each other in different positions.”
Gigliotti and Collick made history with their championship clash, the first-ever during the regular season between two potential four-time public state titlists.
Gigliotti will pursue his fourth straight Class 2A-1A title, and Collick, his first Class 4A-3A version after having earned three of the Class 2A-1A variety.
Committed to the University of Maryland, Gigliotti improved on last year's runner-up finish at The War On the Shore in advance of pursuing his school-record fourth straight Class 2A-1A state championship to go with as many county and regional crowns.
Committed to The University of Nebraska, Collick was third at War On The Shore a year ago and is attempting to become the Seahawks' first-ever four-time title winner in the Bayside Conference, regional and state tournaments.
Gigliotti lost last year’s War On The Shore final, 4-1, in overtime to Northern-Calvert’s then-senior Drew Montgomery, who avenged a 4-2 dual meet loss of a year earlier.
Montgomery was a winner of three Class 4A-3A state titles in four championship berths, and the loss was the first in the high school career for Gigliotti to a Maryland public or private school wrestler during the high school regular or postseason.
Gigliotti and Collick are looking to become Maryland's 10th and 11th four-time public school state champions, following Aberdeen's Matt Slutzky (1989-1992), Owings Mills' Steve Kessler (1994-1997), Hereford's Josh Asper (2005-2008), Southern-Garrett's George "Brutus" Scheffel (2007-2010), Centennial's Nathan Kraisser (2009-2012), Middletown's Danny Bertoni (2014-2017), Centennial's Jason Kraisser (2016-2019), North Hagerstown's Aaron Brooks (2015-2018) and Centennial's Calvin Kraisser (2021-2025).
Gigliotti was supported by his father, Anthony Gigliotti, a former Class 4A-3A state champion at Sherwood in 1999 who was also a runner-up as a junior following a 5-4 loss to undefeated Parkville senior David Heath.
“Maryland needs more matches like this where it’s an exciting, head-to-head battle. I just enjoyed the atmosphere of our wrestling match,” Gigliotti said. “I’m very thankful for everyone being there. The energy was unmatched and nothing like I’ve ever been a part of, but the job isn’t finished. I still have a lot of things to improve on, and it’s back to work on Monday.”
Scheiner is a returning MIAA runner-up who was fourth at states and eventually finished third following a forfeit by Belfer.
175 pounds: No. 1 Noah Tucker (Bullis) vs. No. 1 Zach Garvin (Rising Sun), 14-6:
Tucker continues to impress despite rising two weight classes from 157 pounds, where last year he placed third at both private school states and at the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals.
Tucker used pins in 30, 84 and 92 seconds to go along with an 18-2 technical fall to reach the finals against Garvin, a previously undefeated wrestler who had advanced on pins in 53 and 86 seconds to go with a 15-0 technical fall and a 10-0 major decision.
In Garvin, Tucker faced an opponent who had earned three straight Upper Chesapeake Athletic Conference titles, two regional crowns in three championship berths, and had placed sixth, fifth and first at the past three Class 2A-1A state tournaments.
“Starting off the match, I knew [Garvin] was a solid opponent, but I also knew there was a large gap between our skill levels,” said Tucker, who built an early lead and coasted to the 14-6 major decision victory.
“In the first period of the match, I opened by controlling the center, getting three takedowns, and letting him up twice. I relaxed at the end and gave up a silly takedown, but other than that, I finished with the 14-6 victory.”
In Garvin, Tucker defeated a state champion in the War On The Shore finals. Tucker won last year’s crown at 157 pounds by a 6-2 decision over then-Huntingtown senior Will Buckler, the eventual winner of a Class 2A-1A state title last year.
Tucker also ended last season with a fourth-place performance at the National Prep tournament, where he defeated Gilman’s MIAA champ and private school’s runner-up John Jurkovich as well as Mount St. Joseph’s MIAA runner-up and private schools champ Cameron Cannaday.
At the season-opening Ray Oliver Tournament at McDonogh, Tucker won his crown by decking four opponents and scoring a technical fall against the other comprising a 20-5 technical fall and pins in 1:56, 3:07, 3:08 and 2:59.
Tucker's last fall at McDonogh in 2:59 came in the title bout against Gilman's fourth-ranked junior Arthur Konshak, who returned to the 175-pound division he competed in last year toward earning third place at Ray Oliver before winning MIAAs and private school states.
Prior to the Christmas Break, Tucker placed third at the prestigious Beast of the East in Delaware. Amongst Tucker’s victories was one over a Virginia wrestler from Christiansburg, 26th ranked nationally, Jake Robie. Tucker is ranked 24th nationally.
“I wanted to score bonus points,” Tucker said. “From there, I just controlled the pace of the match. I’ll use this tournament to build more steam for the rest of the season and the National Preps.”
126 pounds: No. 1 Eli Gabrielson (Archbishop Spalding) dec. No. 2 Jayden Jackson (Loyola), 4-0:
A rematch of last month’s Ray Oliver Tournament final at McDonogh yielded similar results as Gabrielson won by shutout, yet again, over Jackson, a returning MIAA and private schools state champion.
An earlier 8-0 winner against Jackson at McDonogh, Gabrielson decked all of his previous opponents by falls in 76, 85 and 99 seconds to go with another in 3:50 of his semifinal.
“Jayden Jackson is a tough opponent,” said Gabrielson of Jackson, a potential rival at MIAAs and private school states. “He’s definitely going to remain a tough match every time that we wrestle.”
Gabrielson transferred from second-ranked South Carroll, where his 43-0 record included winning last year's Carroll County, region and Class 1A state titles and finishing second in the National High School Coaches' Association Tournament.
“Getting to see my former [South Carroll] teammates is definitely nice. I was glad to see them and how they’re competing,” Gabrielson said. “But when it comes to wrestling them, it doesn’t matter who is out there on the mat against you. Best friend or stranger, the goal is to win.”
As a 106-pound freshman at St. Mary's Ryken, Gabrielson earned a title in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, was a private schools' state runner-up and placed fourth at National Preps.
113 pounds: No. 1 Charlie Mutschler (Archbishop Spalding) dec Vince Von Bernewitz (Great Bridge, Va.), 8-5, OT:
Mutschler’s overtime victory signals his readiness to improve on last year’s third- and second- place finishes at MIAAs and private school states.
“It felt great to win the match in overtime,” Mutschler said. “But I knew I had the gas tank to win late because of all of the hard work that we put in during practice.”
Mutschler had used falls in 16, 76 and 85 seconds to reach the semifinals, where he scored a 19-3 technical fall over fifth-ranked junior Owen Hayden of Huntingtown.
An eventual fifth-place finisher at War On The Shore, Hayden is a returning champion in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference and Class 2A-1A South Region tournaments who was runner-up at Class 2A-1A states.
106 pounds: No. 1 Charles Cooper (Loyola) over No. 2 Damian DuChez (Bullis), 10-4:
A winner of the Ray Oliver Tournament at McDonogh and eighth place finisher at the Beast of the East, Cooper used technical falls of 21-5, 20-2 and a pin in 1:53 to reach his semifinal, where he scored a 17-2 technical fall over fourth-ranked sophomore Paul Fitzpatrick of Oakdale.
Cooper then earned his championship 10-4 victory over DuChez, a second-ranked sophomore who transferred from Urbana where he placed second, first and second in the Frederick County, Class 4A-3A West Region and Class 4A-3A state tournaments.
“My leg sweep worked well in my first couple of matches, so that’s how I scored most of my points. My first few matches were really just taking them down and cutting them. I wasn’t really familiar with Fitzpatrick or DuChez,” Cooper said.
“I used my snap-downs and arm drags against Fitzpatrick and was able to get angles on him as he opened up. DuChez took a lot of shots, so I just stayed to myself, relied on my technique and made him pay for it. It was fun to go in against two established sophomores and to have the crowd cheering me.”
DuChez was a 3-1 semifinal winner against Gowl, but had lost to Fitzpatrick in overtime of their title match of last month’s Damascus Holiday Tournament. DuChez is 3-1 against Fitzpatrick, an eventual fifth place finisher at War On the Shore who was third, second and fourth at last year’s Frederick County, Class 4A-3A West Region and Class 4A-3A state tournaments.
150 pounds: No. 1 Brookly Pickett (Mount St. Joseph) pinned Owen Borden (Staunton River, Va), 1:28:
Ranked 18th nationally, Pickett decked Borden in 88 seconds after reaching the finals following consecutive pins of 1:54, 3:07, 2:33 and 35 seconds.
“In the finals, I went to a snap-down to an underhook run-through,” said Pickett. “From there, he just fell into the cradle, and it was there for the pin.”
Pickett’s 35-second fall was against 13th-ranked freshman Quin Regnier of South Carroll, who wrestled back for third place.
“The way I dominated was expected,” Pickett said. “That’s what we strive to do at Mount St. Joe.”
157 pounds: No. 1 Zane Leitzel (Archbishop Spalding) dec. Nicolas Walker (Cape Henlopen, DE), 7-1:
Leitzel outscored his last three opponents by a combined 16-3, including Walker. A returning MIAA and private schools state champion who was fifth at National Preps, Leitzel added the War On The Shore to his season-opening victory in the Ray Oliver Tournament at McDonogh.
After nailing down pins in 50 seconds and 3:05 of his first two bouts, Leitzel required a pair of narrow decisions, the first being a 4-1 overtime quarterfinal victory over sophomore Lazaro Torralba of Saint James Academy of Virginia.
Leitzel then won his semifinal bout by 5-1 decision over fourth-ranked junior Conor Allison of Mount St. Joseph, who was sixth and fourth at MIAAs and private school states last year. Allison defeated Torralba, 9-6, for third place.
“Whenever they’re facing a guy in an Archbishop Spalding uniform, you know that everyone wants to keep the match super close, so I was prepared for that,” Leitzel said. “Not every match is going to be a blowout, so I was controlling the matches, not doing any dumb things and knowing when I wanted to score.
190 pounds: No. 7 Aaron Moccia (C. Milton Wright) pinned No. 14 Luke Winkler (Archbishop Spalding), 0:44:
Moccia earned falls in 50 and 99 seconds along with another in 2:36 of his semifinal over Woodbridge senior Michael Bojang.
“I was being patient on top and waiting for my openings,” Moccia said. “That’s what worked for me in the matches leading up to the finals, staying aggressive in the neutral position.”
Moccia’s 44-second fall against Winkler shows that he is much-improved over last year, when he earned titles in the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference and Class 2A-1A North Regional tournaments.
“In the championship match, I had worked toward slowing down the match,” Moccia said. “I was wrestling at my pace, but I was able to hit my high-crotch takedown, drive him to his back and right into the pin.”
Moccia had won his previous match by 9-3 decision over South Carroll’s 10th-ranked freshman Jacob Endzel before facing Bojang.
Bojang’s previous victory was a 9-5 decision over third-ranked senior Haden Myers of St. Paul’s, a returning MIAA and private schools state runner-up.
“I’d like to win the state tournament along with helping my team win the state duals, and I feel as if winning this tournament was a big step in that direction,” Moccia said. “I have encouraging coaches who push me toward success, and teammates who I know will support me no matter what.”
Moccia’s ninth-year coach is John Thornton, a 1999 graduate of C. Milton Wright and former state champion went 37-0 as a 6-foot-2 senior and twice earned Harford County and regional titles.
Armed with a career record 114-21, Thornton’s Maryland crown was actually his second state title coupled with the one he earned as a freshman in Virginia.
“Aaron’s goal is to become a state champion this year, and he knew this weekend would be a good opportunity to see where he is among the best in the state,” Thornton said. “Aaron took a big step forward toward that goal this weekend, becoming the first C. Milton Wright Mustangs’ wrestler to win the War On The Shore.”
215: pounds: No. 1 Pete Snyder (Stephen Decatur) dec. No. 3 Evan Gavin (St. Mary’s Ryken), 10-7:
Committed to Northwestern University, Snyder rose in weight to secure his 10-7 victory over Gavin, a returning private schools state champion who was fifth at War On The Shore last year.
Snyder’s path to the finals comprised a 90-second pin followed by three consecutive technical falls by scores of 21-6, 21-3 and 17-3, the latter in the semifinals against junior Sawyer Ermigiotti of Pennridge High of Pennsylvania.
Gavin had used consecutive technical falls by scores of 17-2 to reach his semifinal bout, where he decked Hamper at 6:15 of overtime.
The previously undefeated Hamper is in pursuit of his third straight Carroll County and Class 2A-1A state titles after having finished second and first in the past two regional tournaments.
A third-place finisher at War On The Shore last year, Hamper finished fourth following a 2-1 loss to Ermigiotti.
Snyder has returned to the Seahawks following three seasons at Blair Academy, where he earned a National Preps crown as a 165-pound freshman. Snyder placed fifth at Preps as a sophomore and missed his junior season due to an injury.
