RESULTS: Maryland Kicked off FRECO @ MSWA Edgewood Open

Last Sunday at Edgewood High School the Maryland State Wrestling Association held its first event of the Olympic Style Season. 16U and 19U Boys competed in Freestyle and Greco Roman. The Girls competed in Freestyle only.

There were just three weights contested in the Girls’ Division, two in 16U and the other in 19U. Quince Orchard’s Amirah Abegesah (No. 3 at 150 in the Final Legacy Girls Rankings) won the 19U 170lb gold with two straight wins in a best of three with Edgewood’s Gabriella Rodriguez Dodson. The first was a 10-0 technical superiority and then a 22 second pin. In FS, you need a ten-point gap for a tech.

The 16U 120lb title was won on pins of 51 and 14 seconds by Northwood’s No. 19 Ashley Diaz over Germantown’s Isabella Rodriguez Dodson. No. 3 Catherine Orndorff (Brunswick) finished second in a round robin affair at 105-110 and fell by tech, 10-0, to the champion from Stafford, Julie Gatto, who was fourth in the VA states.

Gatto represented Clinic Wrestling Club FXBG. Clinic crowned three 16U FS champs on the boys’ side with two of them also locking down GR titles. Double champs were Danny Gatto (132) and Tomas Melendez (120-126). Jaeden Branon used a 10-0 tech of Loyola-Blakefield’s No. 20 Evan Jackson in round robin action for the 138lb freestyle top spot.

There were two more double champs in the 16U slate, Delaware middle-schooler Jaden Uhde repping Rampage Wrestling Club and HeadHunters’ No. 5 Jacob Naylor (McDonogh, 106-113 in FS and 113 in GR). Both of Naylor’s victories came against the same foe, Cody Bakhsh, a middle school grappler from Delaware, who competed for Team Maryland at Kids Nationals last year. Tech falls in both disciplines delivered Naylor his glory.

The final 16U FS champ repped FCMC, Walkersville’s Max Birth. Birth used an upset by fall, 1:05, over Poolesville’s Zoya Wexler (No. 10 at 175), to win the 175-190lb gold. Zoya won a Greco gold at 175 in 16U by pin and 8-0 tech over Germantown’s Elijah Wilson. In GR, an eight-point gap gives you a tech.

Asa Wexler gave Poolesville another 16U GR Championship on consecutive techs of Anthony Benitez Diaz (Compound Wrestling, PA), 9-0 and 8-0, at 157-165lbs.

The Mavericks had two of C. Milton Wright’s finest win 19U Golds in both styles, Devin Sweeney (175, No. 8 at 165) and Aaron Moccia (190, No. 12 at 175).

Both of Sweeney’s titles were earned by beating the same grappler, Hayden Carl (West Springfield, VA), who was fifth at the Class 6 states. In FS, it was a 14-4 tech and in GR 15-10 and 11-3 in a best of three setup. In FS, Sweeney pinned FCMC’s Jack Birth (Walkersville, No. 18 at 157), 2:40. Birth placed third and did not roll on the Greco side.

Moccia’s FS win was a mild upset of Zoya Wexler by fall in 45 seconds. Moccia’s 190-222lb GR gold was earned with a 9-0 tech of Milford Mill’s Aaron Simmons. Moccia teched Simmons, 10-0, in FS. Wexler teched Simmons 12-0 to place second in FS and did not wrestle in the 19U GR bracket.

Under the guise of Alliance Wrestling Club, Linganore’s No. 21 Cash Wheat collected the 144-150lb 19U FS crown with a 16-13 win over McDonogh’s Mason Comegys (No. 6 at 132). Comegys was second in GR at 144 to Pennsylvania’s Ned Kauffman by 8-0 tech.

Wheat tumbled to third at 150-157 in GR falling to Eleanor Roosevelt’s Leo Foreman (No. 7 at 144), 17-0. Foreman was second to West Springfield’s Gregory Barnett, third at 6A states, 9-1. Barnett defeated Wheat, 8-0. Barnett downed Foreman 8-3 to win the 157lb FS gold. Foreman beat Asa Wexler, 14-2, to place second in the FS round robin.

Broadneck’s Miguel E. Caban posted a 2:02 pin and a 10-0 tech of C. Milton Wright’s Sean Downey (Mavericks) in a best of three contest to decide the 120-126lb FS Champ. Caban dropped his 120-132 GR final to Delaware’s Clif Bakhsh (Saint Mark’s), 10-0. Bakhsh, a state runner-up, won the 132-138lb FS title with a 13-2 tech of Bethesda-Chevy Chase’s Jacome Pinargote.
