RESULTS: MSWA Boy's State Championships

The Maryland State Wrestling Association concluded the local FRECO Season with their state tournament at Mount Saint Joseph High School on Saturday. That day saw the heat build into Baltimore and extend to the action on the mats where the Headhunters led the way with three double champs and five other titlists.

SCHEINER AND STEPHENS SHINE

Ben Scheiner and Tyler Stephens secured 19U Freestyle and Greco Roman crowns in their home gym where they are St. Joe teammates and did so here as Headhunter clubmates.

Stephens is rated No. 1 at 150 pounds in both disciplines in the latest MSWA FRECO Rankings. Stephens dropped to 144 pounds for his state glory and decked No. 4 Will McDonough (Cavalier Wrestling Club) in 1:23 of their Freestyle final. Stephens downed fellow Gael, No. 2 Connor Allison, 8-7, for his Greco Roman Gold.

Scheiner is ranked number one at 138 pounds in the FS report and claimed that title here with a 12-2 technical fall in 2:48 versus No. 4 Adan Magnas (Unattached). Rated second in Greco, Scheiner locked down that crown with another tech, 10-0 in 40 seconds, over his clubmate, No. 3 Evan Kaliakoudas, at 132/138 pounds.

NAYLOR GRABBED TWO, TOO

The Headhunters’ third double dipper was No. 3 Jacob Naylor, who won both 16U 120-pound brackets. Naylor is ranked third in both styles. In Freestyle, Naylor kept another Headhunter, Matthew Tawney, off the board with a 10-0 tech that came in 54 seconds. Another who patrols the Headhunter room, Mahmet Kaya, fell to Naylor in Greco by a 10-0 count in 1:12.

Nationally ranked Greco Roman specialist, No. 2 Tyler Verceles, skipped that field here and just participated in Freestyle, where he took the 19U 120-pound gold on a 12-2 tech of No. 6 Miles Molina (Headhunters) in 1:40. With Verceles (No. 29 by High School on SI nationally) out of the way, Molina, who is ranked 7th in Greco, won a tough meeting with No. 8 Brandon Wunder (Headhunters), 9-9, on criteria.

Four other Headhunters collected crowns, all in the 16U brackets – Charles Cooper (FS, 113), Jake Jones, Jr, (FS 144), Evan Durand (GR, 138), and Chad Votta (GR, 144).

THE JONES/VOTTA SAGA

Votta and Jones tangled for the number one spot in both disciplines and split the outcomes with Jones (No. 5 at 150 in FS) taking top honors in Freestyle by sticking Votta (No. 4 at 132 in FS) in 44 seconds. Votta (No. 1 in GR) was the one doing the planting when they met in Greco as he dropped Jones (No. 5 in GR) in 1:06.

Cooper was our number one gun at 106 pounds but jumped up to 113 for states and defeated Capital Wrestling Club’s William McMurtrie, 13-6, and No. 10 at 120 pounds, Samora Wolokolie (Outsiders), 12-1 (3:14). McMurtrie upset Wolokolie 8-4 in the round robin action. Durand (No. 7 at 144 in GR) pitched an 8-0 shutout versus Micah Rogers in 1:26.

TUCKER GETS TWO FOR CAPITAL WRESTLING CLUB

Capital Wrestling Club had four champs, with three in the 19U Division – Noah Tucker (175 pounds), Jake Simione (126), and Cash Wheat (157 pounds). The 16U champion was No. 3 Soshiant Ahanj-Elias, who won a best of three Freestyle series with Lincoln Smiddy with two straight techs, 10-0 and 12-1, both in the first period.

Tucker walked out with a gold in both styles, as the No. 23 grappler in the nation and No. 1 in Maryland picked up the FS title on a 12-2 tech of No. 5 Zoya Wexler (Capital WC). Tucker’s Greco crown came against another Capital WC guy, Luke Monaco, in a best of three set that was over in two with a 10-0 tech and a 1:47 pin.

Simione (No. 9 at 120 pounds) and Wheat pocketed Greco Golds by pinning the second-place finisher. Simione stopped Get Fit Wrestling Club’s Carter Benzon in 3:47. Wheat ended No. 6 Brayden Lobdell’s time on the mat in 49 seconds.

Wheat is ranked second in Greco Roman and number one in FS. The Freestyle final afforded No. 2 Lazaro Torralba (Shore Elite Wrestling Club) and opportunity to post a mild upset and that is what Torralba did in the 157-pound FS Finals with a 3:00 fall.

HIGH-POWERED SHOWDOWN OF STATE CHAMPS

The 132-pound final was a showcase that featured two state champions going toe-to-toe as private school champ, Eli Gabrielson (SMWC Wolfpack) and 4A/3A titlist Jabasie Trice (Beat the Streets) met in one of the few full bracket weights with a traditional final (most were round robin).

As expected, Trice had a difficult time with Gabrielson, who is ranked 43rd in the country in their 19U Final. Gabrielson did all his damage in the first period in rolling up a 10-0 technical fall in 2:09.

TWO WAY MAVS – STEWART AND MOSS

In addition to the ones mentioned above, seven others gained the top spot in both styles, including two 16U Mavericks - Owen Stewart (285 pounds) and Dempsey Moss (215).

Stewart is top rated in Freestyle and No. 2 in Greco. Stewart’s FS win over No. 6 Jordan Drayton (Outsiders) to determine first and second ended with a 1:14 pin for Stewart. They did the two-out-of-three thing in Greco with Stewart using a sweep while allowing no points in techs of 8-0 (:43) and 11-0 (2:20).

Moss is a man of mystery, who has been unopposed this spring in his two MSWA appearances. Moss was awarded gold in FS and GR at the Edgewood Qualifier as the lone man in his bracket. Moss, who is ranked 6th, had no one to spar with at states leaving Moss an unobstructed path to double golds once again.

DOUBLE GOLD FOR LINK, SNYDER, SOLIS, AND TYLER

Four more 16U youngsters wore two gold medals at the conclusion of activity, Kyle Link (Rampage Wrestling), John Snyder (Warhawks), Max Solis (Unattached), and Kadyn Tyler (Outsiders).

ON THE RAMPAGE

Link is ranked third in FS and 2nd in GR. Cooper went to 113 pounds leaving No. 2 Julian McCrimmon (DeMatha) as the highest rated guy in the 100/106-pound FS bracket. Things got messy but when the dust settled Link was number one and McCrimmon had fallen to third.

Link beat Cayetano Nicodemus (Capital Wrestling Club) 17-7 (3:23). Nicodemus upended McCrimmon 9-5. McCrimmon started their round robin action by handing Link an 8-1 loss. The three-way tie was broken with Link in first and Nicodemus in second. Link’s Greco title came with less drama on an 11-0 tech in 2:22 of Nicodemus.

Rampage added a second 16U champ in Freestyle with Braidyn Taby (No. 8 at 120) when he decked Capital Wrestling Club’s Miguel Echeverria in 3:38 of their 126-pound true final meeting.

WARHAWK NUMBER ONES

Snyder is not ranked in Freestyle, where he won the 175-pound gold by medical forfeit from Outsiders’ Nicholas Gibson. Snyder holds the number five ranking in Greco and handled No. 6 Lincoln Smiddy (Headhunters), 12-4 (2:37), at 165/175 pounds.

The Warhawks also picked up a second Freestyle Championship when Andre Kimball stuck second-place finishing Abdulaziz Abduraimjono (Winters Mill) 1:07 into their 132-pound 16U Final.

TWO YOUNG GAELS HAVE BIG MOMENTS

Solis repped no club while putting his work in at states but during the season, he and Tyler wear the purple of St. Joe and excelled on their home turf.

Solis defeated the same foe for the crowns in both disciplines, getting the best of Orange Crush’s Aiden York with a pin in 1:05 of their FS round robin encounter. They were matched up for a best of three slate in Greco and Solis ended it in two, with a 58 second pin and an 8-0 tech in 1:28.

Tyler came into states unranked and shocked No. 3 Ryker Keeney (Coco Trained) in round robin bouts by sticking him in 3:52 on the way to the 150/157-pound Greco Gold. Later in the day, Tyler followed that up with a sweep of Nathaniel Lowe, 12-0 (1:15) and a 12 second fall at 157 pounds in FS. Keeney bounced back to take the 150-pound FS title with a 12-0 tech of No. 10 Ayden Leader (Rampage).

The Outsiders had a second rep step on the top of the Greco podium in Wolokolie, who took down No. 4 Youssef Rahim (Capital Wrestling Club), 11-1 (3:03), and McMurtrie, 12-4 (1:02).

DIMONTE AND HAYES ARE GOLDEN TWICE

The last two to taste victory in both styles were 19U grapplers Austin Hayes (Team Takedown) and Giuseppe DiMonte (Eagle Wrestling Club). Both did so versus the same second place guy as well.

Hayes is ranked 4th at 120 pounds and faced No. 4 at 113 pounds, Grayson DeCosmo (Headhunters). In Freestyle the 113-pound crown came on a 10-0 tech. Another shutout tech was used in Greco, 8-0, for the 106/113-pound title.

DiMonte is ranked second at 190 pounds and met Ethan Vayro (SMWC Wolfpack), who is unranked since this was his first FRECO appearance. DiMonte met Vayro in a traditional final at the end of the 190-pound FS Bracket and pinned his rival in 1:39. Dimonte came up with a 14-6 tech for the Greco win over Vayro.

TWO MORE CLUBS WITH TWO TITLES

In addition to Keeney’s FS gold, Coco Trained added a 19U FS version when No. 2 John O’Neal defeated No. 3 Cole Bryant (Outsiders) with an 11-1 tech in 1:43. O’Neal came up short on the Greco side, falling to No. 5 Payton Green on an 11-3 count in 2:40.

The Cavalier Wrestling Club pushed Isaac Cicchetti to the top of the 16U 138-pound podium and the 19U Charlie Mutschler to the top position at 126 pounds.

Cicchetti is ranked third at 138 pounds and had a normal bracket to navigate and did so successfully to meet Durand in the finals and ended it quickly with a 1:33 fall. The No. 2 Mutschler slapped big wins on Benzon (Get Fit WC) and No. 9 Simione. Benzon pinned Simione in 1:51 to land in second.

THE LONE WOLVES

The remaining champs earned their accolades as unattached wrestlers or were the only members of their clubs to hit paydirt. McDonald Wrestling Academy’s No. 4 Logan Kings dropped a 15-4 tech on No. 6 Nicolas Toung for the 19U 150-pound FS championship. Toung toppled No. 4 at 144 pounds, Vincent Kirby (Get Fit), 8-0, to claim the Greco version.

Joao Vic Guerra, making his 2026 Olympic Style debut, locked down the 19U 165-pound gold on a 10-0, 48 second tech of Dominick Rossi (Red Rock Wrestling Club). Rossi is not ranked in FS but came in at No. 4 in GR and stuck Outsiders’ Evan Clarke (No. 4 at 157) in the 165-pound GR Final.

Legend Wrestling Club’s No. 6 Thomas Bradford kept Taby from becoming a double champ when he won a 12-6 decision to take the 126-pound 16U Greco Title.

Zaniness occurred when deciding the 19U 215-pound FS Champ. Not by the MSWA, but by the wrestlers as No. 5 Max Birth (Frederick County Mat Club) pinned No. 6 Jonah Selassie when they met during the round robin trip. Catonsville’s No. 4 Josh Agen Davis stuck Birth in 5:43 of their bout. Agen Davis medically forfeiting to Selassie allowed for Selassie to be named the champion. When it came to Greco, Agen Davis (ranked third in GR) blanked Birth (No. 4 GR), 8-0 in 2:26, to gain the 215-pounds 19U GR title.
