RESULTS: MSWA Women's Freestyle State Championships

The book on the 2026 Maryland FRECO Season closed on Saturday at Mount Saint Joseph High School with the Maryland State Wrestling Association’s Freestyle and Greco Roman State Championships. Competitors of all ages took to the mats, the focus of this article will be the high school age groups for the girls, 16U and 19U Freestyle only.

MANA MANIA WITH 7 GOLDEN GIRLS

The ladies of Maryland Mana stole the show with seven champions across the two age groups, five of which came amongst the junior ranks – Cori Lyons (110 pounds), Rileigh Romberger (125), Alexis Nicholas (130 pounds), Naima Harvey-Bowen (155), and Aubry Spadoni (170 pounds).

Lyons collected her crown after Jada Agurs (SMWC Wolfpack) medically forfeited to her. Romberger’s round robin weight class led to a 1:50 pin of No. 6 Rhea Dupre to take title. Nicholas is ranked fifth and ran into No. 4 Emily Cabo (Maryland Mat Monsters) as she did the round robin thing and stuck Cabo in 1:00.

No. 3 Harvey-Bowen used a 10-0 technical fall in 2:19 to take down Jasmine Brock (Outsiders). Spadoni lost her first match with No. 5 Emma Higgs by fall, 1:31, then came back to win two straight on pins of 1:37 and 2:01.

Mana may have gained another 19U gold, but results are inconclusive. Addison Grubb won her first match at 140 pounds versus No. 5 Sonia Pegoue (Beat the Streets). Pegoue teched Grubb in round two, 11-1 (2:26). There was no result posted for the rubber match.

The 16U Mana Contestants that locked down gold medals were No. 5 Calleigh McBride (105 pounds) and No. 2 Grace Reilly (135). If a girl is unranked, it’s because she made her FS debut at states and will be added to the next report.

McBride was set up for a best of three affair with Laicey Durham but only needed two outings to end it with two tech falls, 11-1 (3:41) and 10-0 (2:42). Reilly met a girl from her club in her round robin action in Micah Scott who placed second after losing 12-6 to Reilly.

OUTSIDERS ARE IN WITH FOUR CHAMPS

Outsiders put forth a good foot as well with four champions, two in each classification. The 16U glory came to No. 4 Natalie Vance (95/100 pounds) and Grayson Richburg (115/120 pounds).

Vance got it done with two consecutive techs of No. 3 Khloe Buckholdt, 10-0 (:55) and 12-1 (2:17). Richburg is an up-and-coming middle school grappler, who collected one of those crowns too, but the 16U one came at the expense of fellow Outsider, No. 3 Sofie French (ranked at 125/135) and No. 2 Catherine Orndorff (105/115). French beat Orndorff to take second place.

Speaking of surprises, Milford Mill’s Ty’liyah Lofland delivered one of those to No. 9 Denna Momeni (Capital Wrestling Club) by sweeping their final series, 11-0 in 1:39 and with a fall of 1:16, to take the 16U 155-pound gold.

Over on the 19U slate, No. 4 at 120 pounds, May Brownstein captured the 115-pound crown and Emily Wockenfus brought home the 145-pound glory for the Outsiders.

Brownstein won a 14-7 decision versus Maryland Mana’s Madalyn Johnson and followed that with a 3:39 pin to end their meeting at two bouts. Wockenfus’ round robin slate put her up against her clubmate, Gabrielle Hernandez Trochez, who she teched 10-0, and she also slayed No. 7 Gianna Guarnera (Maryland Mat Monsters). Hernandez Trochez, who has been active but not cracked the rankings made her case by beating Guarnera to place second.

ONES VERSUS TWOS

On the 19U side there were two best of three setups that paired the number one and two girls together. At 100 pounds, it was No. 1 Olivia Crosby sweeping the Headhunters’ No. 2 Jahzara Smith with two 10-0 techs. Top ranked Kamil Johnson (Oxon Hill) posted techs of 15-4 and 14-3 over No. 2 Natalia-Grace Allen (Maryland Mana) at 190/207 pounds.

RANKED LADIES SHOW OUT

Mavericks Wrestling Club’s No. 1 Madison Birth was also in a 19U best of 3 series but not with the next girl in line. Birth met No. 5 Ashley Diaz (Headhunters) at 120 pounds and discarded her with techs of 12-2 and 12-1.

Capital Wrestling Club’s No. 2 Yael Wexler won a battle of state ranked girls in the 16U 170-pound finals by sweeping No. 4 Chloe Snavely of Annapolis with a 19 second pin and 10-0 technical fall.

Two more ranked ladies went home as state champions, Diamond Fish’s No. 6 Fiona Ritchie (16U 140/145 pounds) and No. 6 Sophia Babayev (19U 105).

Ritchie placed an 11-0 tech fall of Maryland Mana’s second place finishing Gema Serio in 4:00. Babayev decked Maryland Mana’s Githarthi Hora twice in 1:20 and 1:05.

In the 16U realm, Joslynn Vallare (130 pounds) went the distance with Sophie Amini (Capital Wrestling Club). Vallare planted Amini in 59 seconds to start. Amini got her back with an even quicker 38 second ending. Vallare ended their encounter 1:33 into round three with a 12-2 tech fall.

The final two 16U Champs, Get Fit’s No. 3 Skylar Leopold (190 pounds) and The Zone’s Sophia Garbarino (235), gained their titles by showing up as they were the lone participants in their weights and received a bye to the top.
