Fourth-ranked South Carroll’s wrestlers continued their dominance last Saturday at North PointHigh, drilling The Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE) in the semifinals and 24th-ranked Rising Sun in the finals for their fifth consecutive Class 1A state dual meet crown.
At 32-0, the Cavaliers of 13th-year coach Bryan Hamper earned their ninth overall state dual meet crown and will pursue their sixth straight Carroll County Tournament title on Saturday at Westminster High.
Led by seven returning state place winners from a team that went 25-1 last season, the Cavaliers earned their 46th and 47th consecutive dual meet victories, 77-6 over ACCE and, 49-30 over Rising Sun.
Legacy Wrestling ranks nine wrestlers in the Cavaliers’ lineup comprising top-ranked senior Jo Jo Gigliotti (144), third-ranked senior Landon Hamper (215/285), fourth-ranked senior Anthony Rodrigues (175), fifth-ranked junior Davy Snyder (165), sixth-ranked senior Grayson Barnhill (120), sixth-ranked freshman Quin Regnier (150), seventh-ranked sophomore Jake Simione (113), eighth-ranked junior Brody Henry (138) and eighth-ranked freshman Jacob Endzel (190/215).
All of the above were double-winners on Saturday led by Simione with falls in 12 and 92 seconds. Simione was first, second and third in counties, regions and states last year.
Snyder earned a fall in 1:45 to go with a 21-5 technical fall. Henry flattened an opponent in 1:46 and scored an 18-3 technical fall against the other.
Snyder is a two-time county champion who has placed first and fourth at regions and fifth and third at states. Henry has earned a pair of county and regional titles and placed fifth and fourth at states.
Rodrigues had a pin in 2:39 along with a 17-2 technical fall. Regnier decked one rival in 4:57 to go with a 16-1 technical fall.
Armed with 124 career victories and 64 career falls, Rodrigues returned this year after missing all of last season due to a back injury and having earned county, regional and Class 2A-1A state titles as a sophomore.
Barnhill won a 10-2 major decision in addition to taking 16 seconds to earn his 32nd pin of the season and the 131st of his career. A three-time county and regional champion, senior Grayson Barnhill has a career record of 150-18 and placed second, first and fifth in the past three state tournaments.
Landon Hamper won by 16-second fall against Rising Sun’s 285-pound Wade Johnson to go with a forfeit, and Endzel pinned his 215-pound Rising Sun rival Caleb Perrine and received a forfeit.
With a career record of 145-16 with 88 pins, Landon Hamper is in pursuit of his third straight county and state titles after having finished second and first in the past two regional tournaments.
“I didn’t get much wrestling time at the state semifinals and finals, with only the opportunity to get a fall in 16 seconds against the Rising Sun 285-pounder in the finals,” Landon Hamper said. “But the rest of the matches over the weekend were electric with huge wins coming from everyone battling through adversity on the mat. Just watching my teammates light up the gym was amazing.”
Gigliotti won by 43-second fall against Rising Sun’s Sawyer Bell and received a forfeit. Committed to the University of Maryland, Gigliotti is chasing his school-record fourth straight Class 1A state championship to go with as many Carroll County and regional crowns.
“This year the goal was simple: To be the best version of myself and to build everyone up around me. We take great pride in winning when it matters the most,” said Gigliotti, whose career record is 179-4 with 128 pins. “It’s bittersweet that this will be my last year here. But I’m excited for the future of the program and the guys we are passing on the torch to. Now it’s time to go and chase some individual titles.”
South Carroll finished at 33-1 three years ago in 2023, winning their second straight state dual meet crown. In 2024, the Cavaliers finished with a record of 27-0 for their third consecutive Class 1A state duals title with their 34th dual meet win in a row.
Howard County’s Glenelg was the last Maryland public school to defeat South Carroll, doing so in Class 1A regional finals in February, 2020. The Cavaliers then posted consecutive undefeated seasons at 12-0, in 2021, and 26-0 in 2022.
South Carroll’s last loss to a private school was on Feb. 2, 2023, to Maryland Interstate Athletic Association power Mount St. Joseph, currently ranked second by Legacy Wrestling.
The Cavaliers suffered their lone defeat of last season in January 2025 against state champion Grassfield High of Chesapeake, Virginia. Grassfield is currently ranked 28th in the country.
Bryan Hamper is near the completion of his 13th season during a career in which he has spent the other 13 years as an assistant with a cemented legacy amongst Maryland's all-time greatest coaches.
Bryan Hamper has personally guided 32 of South Carroll's Maryland public school-leading 45 individual state champion wrestlers.
A 2001 South Carroll graduate, Hamper was twice a state champion and twice placed fourth at the states.
Hamper coached his alma mater to Class 2A-1A state tournament titles in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 before the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association ceased scoring the state tournament in 2018.
Having joined his father by becoming a two-time state champion for the Cavaliers, Landon Hamper can surpass his dad by winning his third.
“State duals meant a lot more to me and the other seniors this year,” Landon Hamper said. “This was our last one as a team being all together. I am proud of my brothers for doing what we do on the mat.”
Bryan Hamper credits the senior leadership over the past four years of Barnhill, Gigliotti, Rodrigues and his son, Landon.
“The senior class is just a special group. Going 115-2 for their career dual meet record with consecutive dual meet state championships is something to be extremely proud of. Combined, Anthony, Grayson, Jo Jo and Landon have seven individual championships,” Bryan Hamper said.
“It’s been an honor and a privilege to be able to sit in their corner and to watch them compete year in and year out. It will be extremely sad over the next three weeks when they wrestle their last matches in a South Carroll singlet, but they’ve changed the culture and the direction of the program by being a part of it. I couldn’t be more thankful that they chose to stay home and to wrestle at South Carroll.”
Winning twice for Rising Sun were second-ranked senior Zach Garvin (190), 23rd-ranked senior Adan Stewart (132), Tyler Henderson (157) and Mason Long (126).
Garvin earned falls in 15 seconds and 2:29, and Stewart had pins in 1:49 and 3:46. Long earned a 19-3 technical fall and a pin in 3:37, and Henderson, a fall in 4:23 to go with a 15-3 major decision.
Garvin has earned three straight Upper Chesapeake Athletic Conference titles, two regional crowns in three championship berths, and has placed sixth, fifth and first at the past three Class 2A-1A state tournaments.
