South Carroll tops Jefferson Duals

South Carroll’s top-ranked senior Landon Hamper (215) earned Outstanding Wrestler honors at last weekend’s 25-team Jefferson Duals Tournament at Jefferson High in Shenandoah Junction, West Virginia, where he and the second-ranked Cavaliers earned identical records of 8-0.

Hamper was among eight wrestlers who went undefeated as the Cavaliers (11-0) earned their 26th straight dual meet victory, with two others losing just one of their eight matches.

South Carroll handled runner-up Washington, 57-22, third-place 52-24, and fourth-place Millbrook, 58-21.

Other Maryland teams in the tournament were Sherwood of Montgomery County (fifth place), Bethesda-Chevy Chase (eighth), Fort Hill (14th), Southern-Garrett (18th) and Tuscarora (20th).

Landon Hamper earned first-period pins in 26, 28 and 43 seconds to go with a 21-6 technical fall, a major decision, a pair of decisions and a forfeit.

“I thought it was a good early test and good preparation for the rest of our upcoming season,” said Landon Hamper, a University of Maryland-bound wrestler in pursuit of his third straight county and state titles after having finished second and first in the past two regional tournaments.

“It was great to be able to get some early competition rather than to have to wait until later on. I know that we’re going to have a loaded schedule later this season, so it’s good to get an early challenge so you’re not just cruising into the latter part of season.”

Landon Hamper’s most difficult victories were decisions over top-ranked Terrell Cofield of Martinsburg High by a score of 5-2, and second-ranked Brannock Barlow of Washington High by the margin of 7-3.

Cofield has placed twice at states in West Virginia, and Barlow is a National High School Coaches’ Association All-American, according to South Carroll coach Bryan Hamper, and confirmed by Legacy Wrestling’s BillyB.

Landon Hamper also dominated his 17-6 major decision over William Potter of Millbrook, who is a two-time state placewinner in Virginia.

Hamper competed while having risen into the 215-pound weight class to allow seventh-ranked freshman Jacob Endzel to compete at 190.

“We had a freshman, Jacob, come in so I decided to go up to 215 and let him get into the lineup and improve our team. I walked around weighing around 200 or 205, so the biggest thing was getting over the rise in weight,” Landon Hamper said.

“All of those guys were pretty tough, so for me, this was a test to see how I felt wrestling up against guys who are bigger than me. I just tried to wrestle smart, using my speed and fakes. Overall, I felt better than what I expected.”

Hamper’s father is 13th-year coach Bryan Hamper, whose Cavaliers are chasing their sixth straight Carroll County Tournament title as well as their fifth consecutive Class 1A state dual meet championship.

A 2001 South Carroll graduate, Bryan Hamper was twice a state champion and twice placed fourth at the states.

Bryan Hamper coached his alma mater to Class 2A-1A state tournament titles in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 before the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association ceased scoring the state tournament in 2018.

Having joined his father by becoming a two-time state champion for the Cavaliers, Landon Hamper can surpass his Dad by winning his third.

“It would be a great deal to keep the family legacy going and surpass my father,” Landon Hamper said. “But I try not to think about it, stay focused and maintain a proper perspective.”

Landon would also join top-ranked senior teammate Jo Jo Gigliotti (138) among six current-three-time state title-winning Cavaliers wrestlers including Mike Chenoweth (1994, 1995, 1996), Joey Thomas (2015, 2016, 2017), Jamar Williams (2015, 2016, 2017), Michael Pizzuto (2020, 2022, 2023) and AJ Rodrigues (2020, 2022, 2023).

“Of course I would like to be a member of that club,” Landon Hamper said. “Jamar is like a big brother who mentors me, and Joey is a big part of my journey.”

Bryan Hamper has personally guided 32 of South Carroll's Maryland public school-leading 45 individual state champion wrestlers, including Gigliotti.

Gigliotti earned three-each in pins and technical falls while going 8-0. Gigliotti decked opponents in 17, 49 and 59 seconds, earned a pair of 18-3 technical falls and a third by the score of 20-5.

Committed to the University of Maryland, Gigliotti is in pursuit of his school-record fourth straight Class 1A state championship to go with as many Carroll County and regional crowns.

“We feel as if our best competition is in our practice room, where we have some of the best wrestlers and the most intensity you’re going to see in this state,” Gigliotti said. “We know as a team the work that we put in every day in practice. Once you see a teammate get a big win, that just gets the ball rolling. We embrace the moment and feed off of one another.”

Ninth-ranked junior Davy Snyder (165) was 8-0 with a 15-0 technical and six first-period pins comprising two in 54 seconds and others in 25, 49 and 73 seconds as well as in 1:59.

“I feel very confident about my wrestling after having competed recently,” said Snyder, a two-time county champion who has placed first and fourth at regions and fifth and third at states.

“I am getting to my offensive attacks and scoring points. With the guys in our room and the way that we train, we have a great season ahead of us. I believe that [a lot of us] will be in line to chase both the individual and team state titles.”

The Cavaliers’ 10th-ranked junior Brody Henry (144) powered through an 8-0 record that included five pins and a pair of technical falls. Four of Henry’s pins were in the first period, including one in just 40 seconds.

Henry also earned an impressive 22-6 technical fall over Ian Ramsey of Riverbend, who is ranked sixth overall in Virginia at 144 pounds, according to coach Bryan Hamper.

“My Dad told me he was ranked high in Virginia, and I had a chance to look at him before we wrestled. He was able to get the first takedown off of a knee-pick, and I think he thought he was gonna win off of the first takedown,” said Henry, who has earned a pair of county and regional titles and placed fifth and fourth at states.

“But I got an escape, took him down and led, 5-3, after the first period and it was all me the rest of the way. Second period, he chose neutral and took a shot, but I snapped him and then pancaked him. Third period, he kept taking bad shots and I started racking up points. I think it helps that I practice with JoJo, Plus, I have fun out there, and I think that’s the difference between us and everyone else.”

Second-ranked senior Anthony Rodrigues (175) went 4-0 with pins in the first and third periods to go with a 10-0 major decision. Rodrigues returns after having earned county, regional and state titles as a sophomore before missing all of last season due to a back injury.

Sixth-ranked senior Grayson Barnhill (120), ninth-ranked sophomore Jake Simione (113) and seventh-ranked freshman Jacob Endzel (190) spent the least amount of time on the mat.

Barnhill went 8-0 with two forfeits and six first-period falls comprising one in nine seconds, two in 11 seconds, one each in 18 and 21 seconds and yet another in 62 seconds.

Barnhill is a three-time county and regional champion who has placed second, first and fifth in the past three state tournaments. Known for his pinning prowess, Barnhill is believed to have 110 career falls.

Simione won all eight of his bouts with three forfeits and five first-period pins in 14, 15, 23, 31 and 39 seconds.

“Being undefeated is a good feeling, but it won’t change my mindset,” said Simione, who was first at counties, second at regions and third at states. “Every match will be a new challenge. I’ll have to stay focused on continuing to grow as the season goes on. I’m excited to be a part of a team like this.”

Endzell is a former nine-time junior league state champion who was 8-0 with six pins comprising two in 28 seconds and those in 11, 36, 52 and 62 seconds.

Freshman Quin Regnier (150) and sophomore Alexander Littler (157) are former junior league state place winners who posted identical records of 7-1.

Regnier earned four of his six pins in the first period to go with a 16-1 technical fall. Regnier earned two of his pins in 50 seconds to go with those in eight and 38 seconds.

Little earned an 18-1 technical fall in addition to registering three of his four pins in the first period comprising those in 16 and 19 seconds along with another in 1:52. Littler also decked an opponent in 5:11 and ground out an 11-7 decision.

Coming off a 25-1 record of a year ago, the Cavaliers finished at 33-1 two years ago in 2023 after winning their second straight state dual meet crown. In 2024, the Cavaliers finished with a record of 27-0 for their third consecutive Class 1A state duals title with their 34th dual meet win in a row.

Howard County stalwart Glenelg was the last Maryland public school to defeat South Carroll, doing so in Class 1A regional finals in February, 2020. The Cavaliers then posted consecutive undefeated seasons at 12-0, in 2021, and 26-0 in 2022.

South Carroll’s last loss to a private school was on Feb. 2, 2023, to Maryland Interstate Athletic Association power Mount St. Joseph, currently ranked third by Legacy Wrestling. The Cavaliers suffered their lone defeat of last season in January against state champion Grassfield High of Chesapeake, Virginia.

The Cavaliers will receive a stiff test during the Jan. 9-11 War On The Shore Tournament at 16th-ranked Stephen Decatur in Ocean City.
