South Carroll wins again!

Fourth-ranked South Carroll crowned four-timers in top-ranked senior Jo Jo Gigliotti (138) and fourth-ranked senior Grayson Barnhill (120), three-timers in second-ranked senior Landon Hamper (215) and fourth-ranked sophomore Davy Snyder (157), and repeat champs in fourth-ranked Brody Henry (132), ninth-ranked sophomore Jake Simione (106) and 10th-ranked senior Anthony Rodrigues (165) among eight individual Carroll County title-winners on Saturday at Westminster High.
Capturing his first county crown was eighth-ranked freshman Jacob Endzel (190), winner of a 4-1 finals match decision over Liberty's ninth-ranked senior Kevin Kern that improved his record on the year to 42-2. Kern lost to Endzel for the second time this season.
“We are really excited about the last two weeks and Jacob’s potential,” Cavaliers’ coach Bryan Hamper said. “Beating a kid like Kevin Kern goes to show where Jacobs at right now as an athlete.”
A runner-up was 16th-ranked freshman Quin Regnier (144), with a third-place effort from sophomore Alexander Little (150), and fourth-place finishes from juniors Conner Deshesky (175) and Mason Pollack (285) and sophomore Jason Patterson (126) as the Cavaliers (229.5 points) overwhelmed 13th-ranked runner-up Westminster (157) for their sixth straight county tournament title with nine finalists and 13 wrestlers placing within the top four of their weight classes.
The triumph comes a week after the Cavaliers won their fifth consecutive Class 1A state dual meet crown at North Point High, drilling The Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE), 77-6, in the semifinals, and 23rd-ranked Rising Sun, 49-30, in the finals
At 32-0, the Cavaliers of 13th-year coach Bryan Hamper earned their 46th and 47th consecutive dual meet victories and ninth overall state dual meet crown.
The Cavaliers 25-1 last season, and, 33-1 three years ago in 2023, winning their second straight state dual meet crown. In 2024, the Cavaliers finished with a record of 27-0 for their third consecutive Class 1A state duals title with their 34th dual meet win in a row.
Howard County’s Glenelg was the last Maryland public school to defeat South Carroll, doing so in Class 1A regional finals in February, 2020. The Cavaliers then posted consecutive undefeated seasons at 12-0, in 2021, and 26-0 in 2022.
South Carroll’s last loss to a private school was on Feb. 2, 2023, to Maryland Interstate Athletic Association power Mount St. Joseph, currently ranked second by Legacy Wrestling. The Cavaliers suffered their lone defeat of last season in January 2025 against state champion Grassfield High of Chesapeake, Virginia. Grassfield is currently ranked 28th in the country.
Gigliotti improved to 40-0, registering pins in 1:48 and 62 seconds, the latter in his championship match with Westminster senior Ethan DeGalicia. Committed to the University of Maryland, Gigliotti has a career record of 181-4 with 130 pins, a record on the year of , and is chasing his school-record fourth straight Class 1A state championship to go with as many regional crowns.
Barnhill earned pins in 19 and 51 seconds, the last being against Manchester Valley sophomore Kaiden Reid. Barnhill is 39-5 with 34 pins on the season, 133 for his career, and a career record of 152-18 that includes two regional titles and having placed second, first and fifth in the past three state tournaments.
Landon Hamper won by pins in 45 and 76 seconds before winning his title match by 20-5 technical fall over Winters Mill's 11th-ranked senior Victor Tejada.
With a career mark of 147-16 that includes 90 pins and this year's record of 43-2, Landon Hamper is in pursuit of his third straight state title after having finished second and first in the past two regional tournaments.
Snyder earned consecutive technical falls by scores of 17-2 and 22-6, the second over Liberty junior Parker Reynolds in the finals. Snyder's record on the season is 41-2, having placed first and fourth at regions and fifth and third at states.
Henry has a record of 41-3, having earned a pair of regional titles and placed fifth and fourth at states. He returned to the podium after winning counties as a freshman and being dethroned last season, doing so with consecutive technical falls by 18-0 and 19-3. Henry's second technical fall was in his title match with Westminster senior Zachary Bowersox.
Rodrigues' record this season is 31-7, having returned after missing all of last season due to a back injury and having earned county, regional and Class 2A-1A state titles as a sophomore.
Armed with 126 career victories and 66 career falls, Rodrigues used pins in 3:08 and 4:26 to reach the finals, where he earned a 4-2 decision over Manchester Valley's 11th-ranked junior Beau Snell.
Simione's run comprised a 23-second fall and consecutive major decisions by scores of 16-3 and 14-5, the last being in his finals match against Manchester Valley sophomore Greyson Hydorn. Simione improved to 42-2, having been second and third at regions and states last year.
Endzel used a 70-second pin and a 15-0 technical fall to reach the finals against Kern, who, as a sophomore, was a county champion and regional runner-up before finishing second at counties and regions to Landon Hamper as a junior and placing third at states.
“We've known Kevin for a long time through youth wrestling, and then we have coached against him in the last couple years,” coach Bryan Hamper said. “He's a great competitor, so for Jacob to be able to go out and have two solid wins over him just shows where he's at heading into the postseason. ”
Westminster crowned three champions in 13th-ranked senior Josh Little (175), 16th-ranked junior Conor Ruane (126) and junior Aiden Wengert (285).
A county runner-up as a sophomore, Little improved his record on the year to 41-4 with a 17-0 technical fall and consecutive pins in 3:05 and 2:52, the last in his title match with Manchester Valley sophomore Trent Cassell.
A returning regional champion, Ruane improved his record on the year to 43-2 following a 10-3 decision and a 5-4 title match victory over 20th-ranked Century senior Brayden Brassell.
Ruane returned to the weight class where he defeated Henry, 4-2, as a sophomore in last year's county title match. Ruane was third at counties as a freshman. A repeat county finalist after winning counties as a sophomore, Brassell's record slipped to 41-3, having placed fourth at regions last year.
Wengert improved on last year's fourth place finish with an overtime, 5-2, title match victory over Century junior Cameron Gernand that followed his semifinal fall in Fall 5:28 over Pollack.
Another repeat champion was Manchester Valley's fourth-ranked senior Bradyn VanDerVoort, who improved his record on the year to 43-2 following identical technical falls by scores of 16-1 and a 19-11 major decision victory over Regnier. VanDerVoort has now placed first twice, and second twice at counties, first, second and third at regions, and third twice and fifth once at states.
Francis Scott Key's 10th-ranked junior Jesse Owings (150) improved on a pair of third-place county finishes by winning this year. Owings improved his record on the year to 29-1 with a 61-second pin, an 11-1 major decision and a 71-1 technical fall against Winters Mill's 13th-ranked senior Jason Acevedo in the finals.
Century crowned ninth-ranked sophomore Eli Stein (106), who dominated a semifinal 19-4 technical fall before winning his title match by 11-2 major decision over Manchester Valley junior Joey Day. A returning third and fourth place finisher at counties and regions last year, Stein improved his record on the year to 42-3, while Day's slipped to 41-3.
