South River wins AA County Championship

South River's Aidan Healey was well-versed on Meade's regional champion Obina Onyeson, the man he was to face in their Anne Arundel County championship clash of 190-pound seniors on Saturday at Broadneck High.

Healey had watched Onyeson lose last year's 182-pound county title bout to then-Broadneck senior Jake Chambers, who required a takedown and three nearfall points within the final 50 seconds to erase a 2-0 deficit for a 5-2 decision.

Next up was Healey's 195-pound county title match with Broadneck's eventual state runner-up Dax Avila. Down by two and being ridden from the top position, Healey reversed and nearly pinned his opponent in the final moments of the second period to regain a permanent 8-5 lead for the title.

Healey lost his Class 4A-3A East regional final rematch with Davila by fall, eventually finishing fourth at Class 4A-3A states where Davila placed second.

A third-place finisher at regions who placed fifth at states, Oneyson used a 59-second fall and a 14-4 major decision to reach the finals against Healey, who had pinned his rivals in 2:43 and 97 seconds.

"The last time Obina and I wrestled, I pinned him in the third," Healey said. "But I knew that no matter what, Obina would be a very tough opponent."

Although Healey was correct in his assessment of Onyeson, he proved to be up to the task yet again, overcoming a 2-0 deficit for a 4-2 victory that improved his record on the year to 41-2.

"First-period Obina took me down and I got out to make it 2-1. Second period I chose down and got out to make it 2-2. Then I got in on a low single and took him down to make it 4-2 entering the third period," said Healey, who could face Onyeson yet again in next weekend's regional.

"I just went out and gave it my all, wrestling smart. I was able to ride him out to win the match. I have wrestled him twice, including this time, but I will probably see him again next week. Winning two county championships is a huge accomplishment for me and I'm proud of it."

Healey was joined on the victory podium by freshman Jackson Peeples (106) and sophomore repeat title-winner Trent Shipley (113) among 13 wrestlers who finished within the top six for the Seahawks (207.5), who overcame runner-up Chesapeake (185) for their sixth county tournament crown. Defending champion Broadneck was fourth.

Third-place finishes came from last year's county champion junior Busayo Balogun (285) and Ethan McWaters (150), with fourth-place efforts from Ethan Burger (126), Pete Laye (132) and Brent Phillips (157).

The Seahawks were Class 3A state dual meet runner-up to Linganore last week, having earned last year's Class 4A version with a resounding, 42-28, triumph over Urbana of Frederick County in the state championship match.

"This past month has shown a lot of growth. We had our down moments in January, but our kids kept working and getting better. We placed all of the 13 kids entered in the tournament within the top six. Each of them scored points for the team," said coach John Kessinger, in his 24th season. "While we didn't do as well as we wanted to individually at some weights, we had others who surpassed our expectations. Overall, the kids have done what we've asked. Not without moments of disappointment. But they've kept putting their noses down and they have worked hard."

A third-place regional finisher who placed fifth at states, Shipley sandwiched a 6-5 semifinal decision over Broadneck's eventual fourth-place finishing sophomore Miguel Caban around falls in 3:25 and 82 seconds. Shipley's first-period pin came in the finals against North County freshman Nikolas Jimenez.

Peeples improved his record to 28-3 on falls in 2:24, 3:06 and 2:14, the latter in the finals against Chesapeake sophomore Mason Szczeszek.

Runner-up Chesapeake crowned senior Michael Greenstreet (126) and junior Xander Dodd (215), who improved their records to 32-2, and 36-1.

A third-place finisher at counties a year ago, Greenstreet used a technical fall and pins in 3:17 and 2:25 to reach the finals, where he dethroned last year's champion, sophomore Michael Queen of Severna Park.

Dodd used pins in 57 seconds and 1:51 to reach his title bout, where he earned a 7-2 decision over senior Leo Flores of Southern.

Arundel crowned junior Cole Figueroa (132), who improved on last year's runner-up finish with a championship 13-4 major decision over Glen Burnie junior Noah Akers. Figueroa reached the finals on pins 2:50 and 3:57 in which preceded an 8-4 semifinal decision over eventual third-place finishing freshman Rex Graves of Northeast.

Champions for Broadneck were juniors Branden Whyte-Taylor (120), Linx Lawless (144) and senior Austin Combs (165).

A runner-up to Queen a year ago, Whyte-Taylor had falls in 1:57, 3:23 and 1:53, the latter in his championship match against Chesapeake sophomore Brayden Roberts, who was third at counties last year.

Lawless improved to 40-2 with his championship fall in 4:55 over Meade senior Cavell Morris, whose record falls to 36-2. Lawless reached the finals on a pin in 3:27 and a semifinal 12-7 decision over fourth-place finishing sophomore Matteo Brown of Arundel.

Combs used pins in 38 seconds and 1:43 to reach the finals, where he earned a 6-3 decision over repeat runner-up and sixth-place state finishing senior Jacob Speed of Crofton, who slipped to 29-3.

Other champions were sophomore Beau Schmidt (138) of Northeast, senior Kairyn Hall (150) of North County, senior Devin Brown (157) of Meade, senior Nathan Kohler (175) of Severna Park, senior R. J. Duncan (285) of Old Mill.

A returning Class 2A-1A state runner-up who improved 33-2, Schmidt reached the finals following a technical fall and a pin in 4:39 before winning his title bout, 5-3, over Arundel junior Luca Brown.

A defending Class 4A-3A state champion who was a county runner-up last season, Duncan improved to 38-1 with his fall in 2:45 over Northeast senior Anthony Mrozek. Duncan reached the finals following a 40-second fall and a 4-2 semifinal over North County junior Elijah Boston.

A returning third-place finisher who was fourth at regions last year, Hall pinned all four of his opponents to improve his record on the year to 31-3.

Hall used falls in 75 seconds, 3:12 and 3:42 to reach the finals, where he took 28 seconds to deck championship rival junior Peyton Miller of Broadneck, a county runner-up last year whose record slips to 40-2.

Brown used a fall in 49 seconds and a 16-9 major decision over South River's fourth-place finishing Brent Phillips to reach the finals, where he won by medical forfeit to improve to 33-4. Brown was to face Annapolis junior Davis Ruhf, who is 22-0.

Kohler pinned all three opponents in 1:22, 3:44 and 5:27, the latter being Chesapeake senior Keanu Furbush. Kohler improved to 27-5 on the year while Furbush is 35-4.
