St. Johns, Gonzaga, & Washington reach Podium

Last weekend the overall DCSAA Washington D.C. Championships were held at Jackson-Reed High School. The public schools have a separate championship, DCIAA, that No. 3 HD Woodson won, they would also be the top public school here landing in fourth.

St. John’s College claimed top team honors with a 3-point margin over Gonzaga College, 226-223. St. John’s won their dual encounter and Gonzaga finished ahead of St. John’s at the WCAC Tournament. The DCSAA Tournament also doubles as D.C.’s National Prep Qualifier, with the highest placing private school wrestler at each weight moving onto the preps.

St. John’s and Gonzaga, the number one and two teams in Legacy Westling’s Washington D.C. Rankings, both crowned four champions.

The gold medalists for St. John’s are all top-rated in the District, Zane Messiter (106 pounds), Matthew Moron (126), Braxton Bohinc (132), and Ethan Glessner (144).

Messiter flattened No. 2 Cayetano Nicodemus of Gonzaga in 1:15. Morin also used a pin to takeout a second ranked foe, with Ray Ko (Washington Latin) falling in 2:35. Bohinc has spent some considerable time at 138 pounds and that is where we have him ranked. Bohinc came back down to 132 and defeated the current No. 1 Cyrus Sabet (St. Alban’s School) by fall, 3:36.

Glessner came out ahead of another one versus two battles as he used a 20-3 technical fall to dismantle Shadon McLaughlin (Model Secondary School for the Deaf). Runners-up for St. John’s were No. 2 Patrick Ruppert-Elepano (113 pounds) and No. 3 Donovin Wright (150).

Others taking home awards for St. John’s were third place finishers No. 3 Griffin Vaughan (120 pounds), Mason Rawlings (138, No. 2 at 132), and No. 3 Steven Rodriguez (285). Unrated Carlos DeNinno came in fourth at 157 pounds.

Like St. John’s champs, the wrestlers Gonzaga put atop the podium also hold number one rankings in Washington D.C. – Billy McMurtrie (113 pounds), Lucian James (157), Jet Ward (175), and Bojan Sulc (190). All four won on pins.

McMurtrie ended Ruppert-Elepano’s time on the mat midway through the second period, 3:06. James went into the final frame before decking Jackson-Reed’s No. 5 Camilo Salazar, 4:24. Ward shutdown Jackson-Reed’s Maxwell Tatton (No. 1 at 175) in 1:23. Sulc turned Sidwell Friend’s Griffin Miller’s lights out in 52 seconds.

No. 4 Washington Latin was third with a single champ in No. 1 Preston Olander, who locked down the 150-pound crown with a 14-3 major decision of St. John’s Wright. The private schools claimed one more gold when St. Anselm’s Abbey School saw Morgan Lloyd (No. 2 at 144) take the 138-pound title from St. John’s Keogh with a third-period fall, 5:14.

HD Woodson left the building with two titlists, No. 4 Randall Ayaba (215 pounds) and No. 2 Ahmar Davis (285). Ayaba met No. 5 Malachi Hill in the finals and decked him in the opening frame, 1:44. Davis dropped No. 1 Hujja Moshod (Sidwell Friends) in 4:34. Hill pinned No. 3 Henry Pietras (St. Anselm’s) in the semis. The wrestlers we have at one and two at 215 did not appear.

The hosts crowned No. 2 Alex Ouzts as 165 pounds as used a pin to down St. Anselm’s Christos Silva (No. 2 at 157) in 2:27. Ron Brown’s Maurice Owens won the 120-pound bracket with a 17-10 decision of No. 1 Allister Maul of Gonzaga. Owens came in rated third at 126 after winning a public-school title at 126 on the Thursday before the D.C. Championships.
