Taina & Kesi Set the Standard

Some of Maryland’s finest ladies made the voyage to Kalahari Resorts in Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania for the Phil Portuese Northeast Regional. Two of them came home as champions, No. 1 (everywhere) Taina Fernandez and Capital Wrestling Club’s Kesi Tsarni, who is rated second in Maryland at 145 pounds behind Fernandez and No. 13 in the country.

Fernandez, who wrestled unattached, was up at 155 pounds in the Junior Division here and was challenged for the first time in recent memory by No. 2 Kaili Manuel (Michigan Wrestling Academy). Fernandez took an early lead as is customary for her, picking up some exposure points and had Manuel in danger of being pinned briefly.

With a 4-0 lead and time winding down in the first period, Manuel slipped a whizzer near the edge of the mat for a smooth takedown to make it 4-2. Offense was kept to a bare minimum with just enough action to stave off the activity time clock, but the scoring was zilch in the second frame until a late spin behind gave Fernandez a final takedown and a 6-2 win.

Tsarni got all over and destroyed Pennsylvania’s Jenny Gautreau (No. 30 at 140 pounds) in the 16U 145-pound finals with a 12-0 tech fall that was over in 3:51. Tsarni won her semifinal by medical forfeit from No. 28 Delaney Dixon (TWWA, NY). A 10-0 tech in 24 seconds and a 39 second pin came in Tsarni’s first two trips to the mat.

Two Junior Ladies placed third, No. 1 Summer Mutschler (Cavalier Wrestling Club) and Maryland Mana’s Sophia Hodges. Mutschler, who is ranked sixth at 105 pounds nationally, wrestled up at 115 pounds here and was tripped up by the unranked Princessstorm Woody (Trenton Youth Wrestling, NJ) in the semis. In the third-place match, Mutschler bested No. 17 Jocelyn Danbe (RedNose, NJ), 12-8.

Hodges’ bronze came at 140 pounds on a 6-5 decision of Adriana DeGroat (Team Mass).

Three 16U Girls landed in the number four spot of the podium, two from the Capital Wrestling Club, No. 2 Yael Wexler (170 pounds) and Denna Momeni (155), plus Get Fit Wrestling Club’s Skylar Leopold (190 pounds).
