Wrestling Notebook : Gilman Duals, Dorsey Duals, Falcon Invitational

Oakdale’s 14th-ranked senior Marty Sandy (150) and sophomore Levi Green (113) were 10-0, and senior Eddy Beza (157) was 9-1 as champions who led the host Bears to their Dorsey Duals crown last weekend.

"We have battled some injuries, but so have most teams, so we were just trying to get the next guys up ready," said Oakdale coach Tim Tao, who graduated from Wheaton High in 2000 as a Montgomery County and regional runner-up who placed fourth at states.

"We had more than half our team go undefeated or finish with records of 9-1 or 8-2, so everyone is contributing. We have been working on believing how good we are and having our actions reflect that."

A two-time runner-up at last month's Damascus Tournament, Sandy appears primed to improve on last year's third place finishes in the Frederick County and Class 4A-3A West Region Tournaments. Beza improved on last month's third place finish at the Damascus Tournament for the 20th-ranked Bears, who defeated runner-up Rising Sun, 37-36, in the finals.

"We have been trying to have more energy at practice and to increase the intensity so that we are prepared for region and state duals. Our goal all year is to go to states and compete, and win the state title so we are trying to adjust our mindset that we are that good and need to wrestle like that," Tao said.

"It was great to see the energy at Dorsey, and even at Damascus Holiday where we took second to [fourth-ranked South Carroll.] We are following up with our mentality about showing how tough we can be. We still have a few really tough teams to wrestle before regionals, but we want to maintain the mindset every day, work hard, keep the energy high, and believe in ourselves."

The runner-up Tigers crowned three 10-0 champions in senior Tyler Henderson (157), Reyn Placentino (120) and Jacob Farr (175). Beza tied for the 157-pound title after splitting bouts with Henderson, a returning third place finisher in last year's Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference (UCBAC).

Although 22nd-ranked Bullis lost all seven dual meets and failed to qualify for the championship rounds, the Bulldogs crowned three 10-0 grapplers in top-ranked junior Noah Tucker (175), second-ranked sophomore Damian DuChez (106) and sixth-ranked junior Stephen Mason (215/285).

Tucker pinned eight opponents and won a 7-0 decision over Rising Sun's second-ranked senior Zach Garvin, who has earned three straight UCBAC titles, two regional crowns in three championship berths, and had placed sixth, fifth and first at the past three Class 2A-1A state tournaments.

The triumph was Tucker's second over Garvin, whom he defeated, 14-6, for his second straight War On The Shore Tournament title. Tucker won last season's War On The Short crown at 157 pounds by a 6-2 decision over then-Huntingtown senior Will Buckler, last year's eventual winner of a Class 2A-1A state title last year.

"My score against Garvin was 7-0, and right off top of the match, I knew he was just trying to hold on and to make it a close match just by the way he was closed off and not opening up at all," said Tucker, who is ranked 23rd nationally. "So, I took it upon myself to go and score points. I got a takedown in the second period and then rode him out for the remainder. It was the same sequence in the third period."

Tucker also scored a second-period fall against Poolesville's eighth-ranked junior Zoya Wexler, a returning champion in the Montgomery County and Class 2A-1A West Regional tournaments who was fourth at Class 2A-1A states last season.

"I’m proud with the performance because I was very sick," Tucker said. "I wasn’t sure if I could wrestle, so picking up a win against top guys in Maryland while I was sick feels good."

Tucker's resume includes last year's fourth-place finish at The National Prep tournament, where he defeated Gilman’s MIAA champ and private school’s runner-up John Jurkovich as well as Mount St. Joseph’s MIAA runner-up and private schools champ Cameron Cannaday.

At the season-opening Ray Oliver Tournament at McDonogh, Tucker pinned all four opponents in 1:56, 3:07, 3:08 and 2:59 and scored a technical fall against the other. Tucker's fall in 2:59 of his title match was against Gilman's fourth-ranked junior Arthur Konshak, who returned to the 175-pound division he competed in last year toward earning third place at Ray Oliver before winning MIAAs and private school states.

Tucker placed third at last month's prestigious Beast of the East in Delaware, where he defeated Virginia High School League (VHSL) state champion Jake Robie of Christiansburg, who is ranked 27th ranked nationally.

Tucker is a two-time winner of the Damascus Holiday Tournament, winning last year's title with a second-period fall over Northwest's second-ranked junior Logan Brown.

Brown finished second, first and third in last year's Montgomery County, Class 4A-3A West Region and Class 4A-3A state tournaments. Brown lost his state semifinal bout, 2-1, in overtime to Leonardtown senior A.J. Kuntz, the eventual champion.

DuChez pinned seven opponents and was named Outstanding Wrestler following decisions of 2-0, and, 2-1, in overtime over Oakdale's seventh-ranked sophomore Paul Fitzpatrick, against whom he improved his series lead to 5-1.

Until defeating him, 7-6, in the finals of last month's Damascus Tournament, Fitzpatrick had gone 0-3 against DuChez, who transferred from Urbana where he placed second, first and second in the Frederick County, Class 4A-3A West Region and Class 4A-3A state tournaments.

DuChez's previous victories had come by scores of, 6-3, 9-3, and, 3-2, of Fitzpatrick, who finished third, second and fourth at last year’s Frederick County, regional and Class 4A-3A state tournaments. DuChez defeated Fitzpatrick, 3-2, in the regional finals last season.

"Fitzpatrick is a tough wrestler, so I knew it would be a good match. I’m grateful for the opportunity to compete against him and come away with the wins," said DuChez, who was runner-up at The War On The Shore. "My motivation comes from close matches against top contenders like Fitzpatrick, and also from my losses, like my finals match at War on the Shore. Those experiences keep me focused and push me to keep getting better as the season goes on."

Mason pinned nine opponents, including Smithsburg's 285-pound champion, Trevor Joseph, according to Bullis coach Drew Robertson.

"[Joseph] first wrestled our heavyweight, Zachary Apple, and beat him on Day One. Our heavyweight went for a college visit and did not participate on Day Two," Robertson said. "We bumped up our 215-pounder, Stephan Mason, to wrestled the Smithsburg heavyweight on Day Two. Stephan took him down twice before winning by a fall."

Robertson is a 1999 DeMatha graduate, four-time WCAC champion, winner of three state titles in four final appearances, and two National Preps crowns after having placed fifth and third.

Crowning a pair of champions was Catoctin in fifth-ranked Ashton Thompson (144) and Barry Riddle (165), and Leonardtown in freshman Dom Herbert (126) and senior Will Colson (138).

Thompson was second, third and sixth in last year's Frederick County, regional and Class 2A-1A state tournaments, and Colson finished third last year's Southern Maryland Athletic Conference.

Other champions were Trevor Joseph (285) of Smithsburg and junior Ethan Dimmerling (132) of Poolesville. Dimmerling is a returning third-place finisher in the Montgomery County Tournament.

FALCON INVITATIONAL AT WINTERS MILL

Archbishop Curley crowned ninth-ranked junior Oscar Davis (150), 17th-ranked sophomore Liam Rose (113) and 24th-ranked freshman Dominic Blocker (106) among five finalists and 10 wrestlers who placed within the top four of their divisions as the 12th-ranked Friars (321 points) overcame ninth-ranked host and runner-up Falcons (295.5) at Winters Mill.

Finishing second were 10th-ranked senior Bailen Boutz (190) and junior Braylon Bradford (285), with third-place efforts from 14th-ranked sophomore Evan Kaliakoudas (126), 19th-ranked freshman Bradlee Anderson (157) and 23rd-ranked sophomore Josiah Williamson (215). Sophomore Reed Boettcher (144) and senior Adeoluwa Adewuyi (175) placed fourth.

Davis won his title match by 10-2 decision over Francis Scott Key's 13th-ranked junior Jesse Owings. Rose earned a 10-5 decision over Tuscarora junior Eugene Amardi-Frimpong. Blocker pinned Sherwood freshman Aaron Zehner 3:33. Davis is 39-4 with 31 pins, Blocker is 28-5 with 12 pins, and Rose is 34-9 with 24 pins.

The tournament victory was the fourth of the year for the Friars, whose coach, Paul Boettcher, is a 1999 graduate of Archbishop Curley and a former Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and private schools state champion.

The Friars won the season-opening Knightmare Invitational at Parkville for the second straight season as well as their own Friars' Duals over the weekend of Jan. 9-10.

The Friars also earned the crown at 13th-ranked Gilman’s Adam Janet Invitational, the latter by overcoming a host and runner-up Greyhounds squad which tied top-ranked Archbishop Spalding for last year’s Maryland Independent/Private Schools' title a week after being dethroned by the Cavaliers as Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament champions.

The host Falcons crowned a pair of champions in 23rd-ranked senior Colton Wasmer (132) and 16th-ranked senior Jason Acevedo (157), as did Sherwood in seventh-ranked senior AJ Lopez (215) and ninth-ranked senior Connor Flickinger (165).

Wasmer scored a title match fall in 3:08 against Westminster junior Zachary Bowersox. Acevedo hammered Frederick's 17th-ranked junior Ramon Espin by 24-6 technical fall.

Lopez earned a fall in 5:44 over Hereford's 13th-ranked senior Adam Keever, who was third, fourth and third at last year's Baltimore County, regional and Class 2A-1A state tournaments. Flickinger won by an 11-5 decision over Frederick's 10th-ranked junior Joao Victor Guerra.

Other title winners were Severna Park's fourth-ranked senior Michael Queen (126), Frederick's ninth-ranked senior Ian Tumi (175), Walkersville's ninth-ranked senior Max Birth (190), Eastern Tech's 13th-ranked senior Chase Ullmann (144), Hereford's 20th-ranked junior Connor Cline (120), Tuscarora senior Austin Flook (138) and Francis Scott Key senior Cory Stouffer (285).

Queen blanked Westminster's 13th-ranked junior, Conor Ruane, by the score of 10-0. Tumi outlasted Westminster's 22nd-ranked senior Josh Little, 13-8. Birth won a wild match, 12-10, over Boutz. Ullmann flattened Severna Park's 17th-ranked senior Aidan Holly in 3:14.

Cline won his championship match by 10-4 decision over Winters Mill's 25th-ranked senior Xander Martin. Flook dominated by an 18-0 technical fall against Sherwood senior JJ Andrews. Stouffer edged Bradford, 7-3.

GILMAN DUALS

Third-ranked junior Arthur Konschak (175), ninth-ranked sophomore Christian Wirts (126), 11th-ranked senior Isaiah Trusty, 13th-ranked junior Sawyer Peck (157) and 17th-ranked senior Noah Lawrence were victorious in all four of their bouts as the host and 13th-ranked Greyhounds won their Haswell M Franklin Duals last weekend.

Wirts flattened all four opponents, including a pair in 24 and 78 seconds. Konschak and Trusty each pinned three times and defeated a third rival by decision. Peck decked three adversaries and received a forfeit. Lawrence had two each in pins and forfeits.

Junior JD Vasser (132) went 3-1 with two pins and a forfeit for the Greyhounds, who overwhelmed runner-up Mercersburg Academy, 71-11, in the title match.

Calvert Hall had a pair of unbeaten wrestlers in sophomore Joe Ryan (120) and junior Sebastian Woods (165). Woods' run comprised a 15-0 technical fall, pins in 44 and 66 seconds and a third in 2:56. Ryan registered falls in 29, 51 and 73 seconds to go with a forfeit.

Landon junior Max Murray (157) decked three rivals and received a forfeit, while freshman teammate Thomas Bradford (120/126) earned a 34-second pin along with a 28-13 technical fall to go with two forfeits. Bishop McNamara senior Marlon Ray (126) pinned three opponents and won a decision over the other.
