The Grapple at the Brook was once again hosted by Springbrook High School in Montgomery County this past weekend with No. 7 Chesapeake of Anne Arundel County setting a record for most team points ever scored at the Grapple with 268, easily outpacing runner-up No. 22 Walt Whitman (192.5).

“We were very happy with how the boys wrestled, they came out to this tournament ready to take care of business,” remarked Chesapeake coach Randy Curtin. “Our team chemistry is really working well right now. However, as nice as this win was, we wrestle South River on Friday night (January 24th). This is the event we have had circled on our calendars for months now.”

The Cougars advanced eight to the championship finals and saw half of them complete their journey to the top of the podium. No. 14 Quin Greenstreet won a 14-11 bout with Springbrook’s Sean Torrez (No. 20 at 113). Torrez placed sixth at last year’s 4A/3A state tournament at 106. Greenstreet also defeated No. 13 Dom Esposito (Long Reach), 10-4, in the semis.

Dominic Ayers captured the 132lb gold with a 13-6 win over Clarksburg’s Brenten Prestcott.

"I think what we have as a team this year is we are all friends outside of the wrestling room,” reflected Ayers. “That camaraderie helps us to push harder because we know the expectations we have for ourselves and each other.”

At 175, Matthew Curtin claimed top honors with an 8-3 win over Dominick Hurley (Old Mill). Hurley beat Bel Air’s No. 17 Joel Tristan Ouandji Nana, 6-1, in his semifinal. Nana was fifth in the state last year on the 4A/3A side.

"As an individual on the team, I have devoted myself to wrestling solely for the glory of Jesus Christ,” Matthew Curtin said. “I think that attitude has been at least partially spread to other wrestlers on the team. We all join in prayer before every match to remind ourselves that our strength doesn’t come from ourselves. He is the reason for my success as a wrestler and I believe the same for the team's success as well."

4A/3A state runner-up, No. 7 Xander Dodd downed Winston Churchill’s Joao Guerra, 12-8, at 215.

Chesapeake’s four silver medalists were No. 9 Bently Schmidt, No. 15 Carson Roberts (120), No. 22 Brayden Roberts (126), and Dean Michael (190). Four other Cougars reached brought home hardware with three of them grabbing bronze – Ethan Mills (144), No. 19 Owen Collins (150), and Collin Richardson (165). Jonas Dotson was fourth at 285.

Walt Whitman had half as many champs and finalists as Chesapeake. At 113, Jabasie Trice (No. 24 at 120) handed the Cougars’ Schmidt a 12-10 loss. Defending 4A/3A state champion, No. 7 Solomon Randall decked Brayden Roberts in 48 seconds at 126lbs.

Placing second for the Vikings were No. 22 Chris Lindstrom (144) and Justin Rommel (150). Rommel beat Chesapeake’s Collins, 6-5, in the semis. Matthew Hobbs was third at 157 as was Andy Boshnick at 215lbs. Laird Ostien was fourth a175. Taking fifth were Ahmet Demirkan (138) and Jacob Sherman (190). Noah Reising-Rubli finished sixth at 106.

Four other Montgomery County wrestlers finished first in their brackets.

Two-time state placer, fifth (SO) and third (JR), No. 4 Owen Pelaez of Clarksburg flattened Whitman’s Rommel in the opening frame, 1:46. Northwest’s Logan Brown (No. 11 at 165), who placed fifth at the private school states for St. Frances last year, took the top spot at 157 with a 13-6 win over Atholton’s Malachi Patterson.

The hosts saw Julius Weiss collect their sole championship by upsetting Carson Roberts, 13-4, in the 120lb final. Gaithersburg’s Nayenecke Ituka blanked Springbrook’s Dominick Jamison, 7-0, for the glory at heavyweight.

Howard County’s Reservoir crowned two champions in No. 6 Andrew Dolezel (138) and Jose Lazo (144, No. 18 at 150). Dolezel, who placed third, second, and third in three trips to the state tournament, blanked Winston Churchill’s Jeremy Kwon with a 15-0 technical fall to earn the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler award.

“It felt good,” remarked Dolezel. “It's cool to be the third four-timer in the 26 years the tournament's been going on. Getting recognized as the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler was also a great honor.”

Lazo registered a tech fall of his own over Lindstrom, 19-4.

“I felt a strong sense of accomplishment,” Lazo said. “It was a competitive experience and a great opportunity to show my hard work.”

Old Mill’s No. 18 Noel Norman-Williams was the 190lb champ by virtue of an 18-6 major decision of Chesapeake’s Michael. Alex Ouzts (Jackson-Reed) is D.C.’s top-ranked 165lber and he won that title here with a third period fall of Atholton’s Thomas MacKenzie, 4:59.
