MSWA Fall Brawl: Girls Edition

The Maryland State Wrestling Association’s two-day Fall Brawl ended on Sunday the 16th of November with the Middle and High School Girls having their tournaments.

Maryland girls claimed half of the eight high school golds with Gwynn Park’s Jada Agurs (106 pounds), Manchester Valley’s Addison Grubb (138/148), Northwood’s Javel Fayad (160 pounds), and Randallstown’s Daegan Bishop (175/200) making the home state proud.

Agurs and Grub are returning MPSSAA Girls State placers with Agurs being third at 105 pounds last year and Grubb landing fifth at 145. Grubb took out Delaware’s 152-pound state champion, Breanna Brown (Middletown), with a 17-6 major decision for her crown.

Agurs faced an upstart Maryland middle schooler, Gabriella Gauthier, who repped the SMWC Wolfpack and came up short versus Agurs, succumbing by fall at the 2:17 mark. Gauthier picked off Stephen Decatur’s state ranked Melani Cruz in round robin action with a 30 second pin. Gauthier collected a Middle School championship at 100/110 by sticking Virginia’s Jordyn Showers, 3:49.

Fayad rolled to an 18-3 technical fall of second place finishing Natalie Rawlings (Headhunters) in a round robin format. Round robin was also the plan for Bishop’s Bracket, and she decked the silver medalist, Yael Wexler (Capital Wrestling Club) in 1:30 in their meeting.

A U17 world champion from Illinois, Morgan Turner (Lockport Township), visited the McDonogh School and claimed titles in two of the brackets, 112 and 118 pounds. Turner came to Maryland as a member of Jordan Burrough’s All I See Is Gold Academy based in New Jersey. Turner competes under their umbrella outside of the high school season.

Turner, who is ranked No. 1 nationally at 110 pounds by High School on SI, handed her club mate, Peyton Brining, a 19-3 tech fall loss at 112 pounds and flattened Harford Tech’s Sofie French in 1:19 at 118 pounds.

Two from Pennsylvania went home with high school wall charts in hand as Molly Branagan (124 pounds) and Reese Montgomery (132) stood atop their weight class’s podium.

Branagan won by fall, 1:43, over Capital Wrestling Club’s Sydney Kantor. Montgomery also won with a pin in 1:29 versus Manchester Valley’s Brynn Ryan. Ryan, who did not place at states, defeated Walkersville’s Alexis Nicholas, who placed third in the state at 120, 4-1, to reach the finals. Montgomery doubled down on golds by taking home the 120-130-pound middle school variety, 18-2, over West Virginia’s Aleeya Rideoutt.

Two Maryland girls secured top honors in middle school realm, Kinsley Kirwan (Kent County Junior Wrestling) and Milford Mill’s Ty’liyah Lofland. Both came in round robin brackets.

Kirwan (65-70 pounds) used an 11-5 decision of runner-up Paisley Grinder (SMWC Wolfpack) to claim her title. Lofland posted a 15-3 major decision of Outsider’s Avery Johnson at 145-160 pounds.

Virginia’s Molly Mooney edged Rampage’s Gabrielle Brady, 3-2, for the 90-pound championship.
