South Carroll’s Quin Regnier (150) is not as widely known as one of the marquee names within the Cavalier’s star-studded line up, but the unranked freshman is making his mark.
Regnier persevered through a pair of come-from-behind victories by identical scores of 15-14 over Oakdale’s 10th-ranked senior Marty Sandy to become one of seven champions, eight finalists and 10 top three placewinners as the second-ranked Cavaliers won the Damascus Holiday Invitational Tournament on Dec. 29-30.
Joining Regnier on the victory podium were top-ranked senior Jo Jo Gigliotti (138), second-ranked senior Landon Hamper (215), seventh-ranked freshman Jacob Endzel (190), ninth-ranked sophomore Jake Simione (113), ninth-ranked junior Davy Snyder (157) and 10th-ranked junior Brody Henry (144) as the Cavaliers (203.5 points) overwhelmed a 13-team field that included runner-up Oakdale (113 points).
Finishing second was sixth-ranked senior Grayson Barnhill (120), with third-place efforts from second-ranked senior Anthony Rodrigues (165) and Mason Pollack (285) as the Cavaliers dethroned 23rd-ranked Bullis (86, fourth) and outdistanced 17th-ranked host Damascus (42.5, eighth).
A former junior league state placewinner, Regnier went 8-0 with four pins and two technical falls in the tournament, whose format featured qualifying pool wrestling rounds followed by a bracketed format.
Landon Hamper’s father is 13th-year coach Bryan Hamper, whose Cavaliers are chasing their sixth straight Carroll County Tournament title as well as their fifth consecutive Class 1A state dual meet championship.
“Because of the format, Quin had to wrestle Martin Sandy twice, and he had to come from behind to overcome leads and to beat him by the same score, 15-14, both times,” said Bryan Hamper, a 2001 South Carroll graduate who was twice a state champion and twice placed fourth at the states. “Quin was down by six points in the finals against Marty Sandy, and he had to score seven points on a takedown and back points to win it. I know it sounds crazy, but that’s exactly what happened.”
Regnier improved his record on the year to 18-1 with 10 pins after defeating Sandy, a returning Damascus Tournament runner-up who had placed third in the Frederick County and Class 4A-3A West Region Tournaments last season.
“Going into Day One of the tournament it went well. I won all of my matches and had a really close match with [Sandy]. I had good warmups with my teammates and got hydrated for a long day of wrestling, so I felt good that day,” Regnier said.
“Day Two of the tournament, I knew I would have to go against [Sandy] again. I became mentally prepared by trying to stay loose and listening to some music because I knew that I had to focus on my matches. My plan was to wear [Sandy] down until the third period and try to score points.”
Endzel is a former nine-time junior league state champion who was equally impressive, pinning seven times in his eight victories to improve his record on the year to 19-0 with 18 pins.
“Quin and Jacob have been amazing additions to our program. As freshmen, they’ve embraced the work ethic needed to compete at the highest level,” Hamper said. “The results so far speak for themselves. I’m very excited about the way they’re progressing and what’s ahead for both of them.”
Endzel won his title match, 4-3, over 18th-ranked senior Mark Martin of Damascus, a recent winner of the Co-ed Pat Briscoe Memorial Tournament at Parkside who was fourth in last year’s Montgomery County Tournament.
“The tournament was great for showing me my mistakes and giving me another opportunity to grow,” Endzel said. “I’m excited to see how much I can improve throughout the season, and I’m looking forward to more chances like this to keep getting better.”
Committed to the University of Maryland, Gigliotti pinned all of his eight opponents, with the last three coming in 1:45, 43 and 41 seconds during his continued pursuit of his school-record fourth straight Class 2A-1A state championship to go with as many Carroll County and regional crowns.
Gigliotti’s 43-second fall was in his semifinal against Damascus’ 17th-ranked junior Cooper Spoales, who has won a pair of Montgomery County Tournament titles, placed first and second at regions and third at Class 2A-1A states.
Landon Hamper is a University of Maryland-bound wrestler in pursuit of his third straight county and state titles after having finished second and first in the past two regional tournaments.
Like Gigliotti, Landon Hamper pinned all of his eight opponents, improving his record on the year to 18-0 with 12 pins.
Landon’s last three falls were in 1:28, 1:50 and 3:02 of his title match with ninth-ranked junior Stephen Mason of Bullis, a fifth-place finisher at private school states.
In Mason, Landon not only decked last year’s 285-pound Damascus Tournament champion, but also, a winner of the recent Mad Mats Invitational at Magruder.
Having joined his father by becoming a two-time state champion for the Cavaliers, Landon Hamper can surpass his dad by winning his third.
Snyder demonstrated why he is a two-time county champion who has placed first and fourth at regions and fifth and third at states by going 8-0 with five pins and three technical falls.
Snyder improved his record on the year to 19-0 with 11 pins, with his last three victories comprising pins in 3:55 and 39 seconds to go with a 21-4 technical fall.
Henry went 8-0 with three pins and five technical falls, improving his record on the year to 19-0 with 10 pins. Henry also earned his 100th and 101st career victories nearly a year after having earned a pair of county and regional titles and placed fifth and fourth at Class 2A-1A states.
Simione’s record on the season is 19-0 with 12 pins after going 8-0 with six pins and two technical falls nearly a year after placing first at counties, second at regions and third at states. Simone won his last three matches by pins in 3:46 and nine seconds to go with a 23-3 technical fall.
Barnhill used falls in 13 and 23 seconds to reach the finals, where he succumbed to a back injury and a medical default against Edison’s Davey Dight.
A three-time county and regional champion who has placed second, first and fifth in the past three state tournaments, Barnhill has a record on the year of 17-2 and 17 pins and 108 career falls.
Other champions were top-ranked junior Noah Tucker (175) of Bullis, fourth-ranked sophomore Paul Fitzpatrick (106) of Oakdale and sixth-ranked sophomore Logan Brown (165) of Northwest.
On the way to earning the Damascus crown for the second straight year, Tucker used a pin in 3:21 and a 17-2 technical fall, the latter in the finals against Thomas Edison’s Marcus Owusu.
Tucker is up two weight classes from 157 pounds, where he finished third a year ago in the Maryland Independent/Private Schools' state tournaments. Tucker was also a third place finisher at the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals last season.
At the season-opening Ray Oliver Tournament at McDonogh, Tucker won his crown by decking four opponents and scoring a technical fall against the other comprising a 20-5 technical fall and pins in 1:56, 3:07, 3:08 and 2:59.
Tucker's last fall at McDonogh in 2:59 came in the title bout against Gilman's fourth-ranked junior Arthur Konshak, who returned to the 175-pound division he competed in last year toward earning third place at Ray Oliver before winning MIAAs and private school states.
A week later, Tucker used falls in 2:38 and 2:51 to reach the finals of the Mad Mats Tournament at Magruder, where he scored a 16-1 technical fall over Jackson-Reed senior Alex Ouzts.
Prior to the Christmas Break, Tucker, who is ranked 24th nationally by High School On SI, placed third at the prestigious Beast of the East in Delaware. Amongst Tucker’s victories was one over a Virginia wrestler from Christiansburg, 26th ranked nationally, Jake Robie.
Tucker’s major victories from a year ago include winning The War On The Shore by 6-2 decision over Huntingtown’s Will Buckler, an eventual Class 2A-1A state champion who finished with a record of 21-2.
Tucker ended last season with a fourth-place performance at the National Prep tournament, where he defeated Gilman’s MIAA champ and private school’s runner-up John Jurkovich as well as Mount St. Joseph’s MIAA runner-up and private schools champ Cameron Cannaday.
“I feel pretty good about my season so far, and I just want to keep growing and getting better,” said Tucker, whose 23-1 record includes 19 pins or technical falls. “I’m happy with how I did at Beast, given that I went 0-2 as a freshman. I’ve been trying to dominate every match by scoring pins or technical falls.”
Fitzpatrick improved his record on the year to 11-1 comprising four pins, two technical falls, one major decision, a decision and three forfeits.
Fitzpatrick used a first-period pin and a 13-1 major decision to reach the finals, where he earned an overtime, 7-6, decision against sixth-ranked sophomore Damian DuChez of Bullis.
A winner of last year’s Damascus Tournament, DuChez has transferred from Urbana, where he placed second, first and second in the Frederick County, Class 4A-3A West Region and Class 4A-3A state tournaments.
DuChez also owns three victories over Fitzpatrick, who was third, second and fourth at last year’s Frederick County, Class 4A-3A West Region and Class 4A-3A state tournaments.
“I have wrestled four times against Damian DuChez – three times last season and one time this season. My first match against Damian was at Urbana last season, where I lost, 6-3. Then I met him again at counties and lost again, 9-3, and placed third at the counties,” Fitzpatrick said.
“We then went to regionals where I met him again in the finals and lost, 3-2, placing second. I went on to the states and placed fourth. I must mention that I was not confident going against Damien DuChez last season, my mindset was not right and did not have the grit to show my ability to dominate the match.”
Brown was runner-up at Damascus to Tucker last season, when he also finished second, first and third in the Montgomery County, Class 4A-3A West Region and Class 4A-3A state tournaments.
At Damascus, Brown registered an 89-second pin and a 12-0 major decision in his semifinal with Urbana senior Carter Kuhar, who was fourth, third and sixth in the Frederick County and Class 4A-3A West Region, and Class 4A-3A states last season.
In the championship match, Brown earned a 7-6 decision over seventh-ranked sophomore Soshiant Ahanj-Elias of Bullis, who had won a semifinal, 11-2, major decision over Rodrigues.
Rodrigues has returned after missing all of last season due to a back injury and earning county, regional and state titles as a sophomore
Ahanj-Elias won the Damascus Tournament a year ago and was third in last year’s Maryland Independent/Private Schools’ State Tournament.
Ahanj-Elias had also won this year’s Magruder Mad Mats Tournament, where he used falls in 85 and 57 seconds to reach the finals before dominating Linganore senior Noah Zohrabi via 17-2 technical fall.
“I was ahead, 6-3, when it was my choice in the third period, so I took the bottom position. Then I escaped, and I was up, 7-3,” Brown said. “I had gotten called for a couple of stalling points while we were on our feet when I decided to play chess and not checkers. I wasn’t worried about him scoring on me because I had secured all of the takedowns in the match.”
Brown improved his record on the year to 11-0 with five pins and four technical falls. Brown lost his Class 4A-3A state semifinal bout, 2-1, in overtime to Leonardtown senior A.J. Kuntz, the eventual champion.
Logan Brown is the younger brother of Samire Brown, winner of a county, region and Class 4A-3A state titles as a 195-pound senior in 2023.
“There’s a competition between Samire and I because he never won the Damascus Tournament,” said Logan Brown, whose career mark is 53-4. “I know that I still have a lot to work on, but my goal is to go undefeated and win states.”
